Coming This Winter: an EL84 DIY Amplifier Build

By | November 1st, 2019|Categories: Wall of sound|Tags: , , , , , , |

Bored yet, Miss K?

Or, “Solder Slingin’ Steve Rides Again”

By Steve Graham

Can success breed success?  Like the efficacious DIY Phono Stage from 2018I’m going have another go at a DIY project. This time it will be an EL84 push-pull integrated/power amplifier.

The build will start with the Simple Push Pull board available from Tubelab.com. Of course, buying a board is the easy part.  A chassis, tubes, transformers, jacks, speaker terminals, resistors, capacitors and all the other bits are needed.Read the full article

ArteLuthe’s La Piccola: A Monitor Speaker that Refuses to Act like One

By | October 5th, 2019|Categories: Wall of sound|Tags: , , , , , , , , , |

My experience with ArteLuthe speakers began when I reviewed the Vivace Mini, a combined effort between Robert Gaboury of Arteluthe and Frank Ng of Triode Labs and Finale Audio. The Vivace Mini is a single driver horn-loaded speaker that defied my expectations of what could be accomplished with a tiny high efficiency driver. My review of that speaker is available here. I also had an opportunity to listen to Gaboury’s Cadenza speakers, which combine the elegance of a horn tweeter and a large woofer in quite spectacular fashion.… Read the full article

Reminder: Only Two Chances Left To Hear Rhitom Sarkar In Toronto

Rhitom Sarkar (at right), and Sonesh Chattlani, in Waterford, ON (7-Sep.2019)
Last Chance and Not To Be Missed!

As I posted at the end of August, Hindustani Slide Guitar master Rhitom Sarkar has been here on a return visit from Kolkota – performing a series of concerts in the Greater Toronto Area. My son and I saw him play in Waterford on Sept.7th, and my wife and I were at the performance on the 14th at Govinda’s in Toronto. Both performances were amazing, with Rhitom’s mohan veena accompanied by the talented and affable Toronto tabla player, Sonesh Chattlani.… Read the full article

Review: Finalé Audio F-7189 II Integrated Amplifier

By | September 16th, 2019|Categories: Wall of sound|Tags: , , , , |

The curtain goes up on a new Finalé amplifier.
Finalé Audio F-7189 II Integrated Amplifier: Watch out old Dynacos, there’s a new EL84 amp in town.
Review by Steve Graham

Did Finalé Audio just pick the model number for their revised EL84 amplifier out of the air?  Not quite.  If you know your tube history – yeah, I know, yawn – a 7189 tube is an obscure, uprated EL84, one that could be run harder and therefore output a bit more power. … Read the full article

FiiO – 2019, The Flagship Year

By | August 9th, 2019|Categories: Headfonics|Tags: , , , , |

I had a real plane, trains, and automobile journey recently into Guangzhou, in the South West of China, to meet up with the FiiO team and have a nosy around their office and factory. It all came about when James Chung, the CEO of FiiO suggested I come out and see how they do things […]

NFP (Not-For-Profit) Tube MM/MC Phono Stage – Built, Tested, Reviewed. And It Can Be Yours

Perky Tubes Protrude
Not-For-Profit MM/MC Phono Stage

The DIY bug has bitten Steve Graham, again.  And he gets in a bit deeper than he bargained for, again.

Warning: This will get a bit wordy.  Vinylphiles and/or tubephiles probably won’t mind.  Digiphiles won’t likely be reading this, but they are most welcome to.

Have you ever noticed the almost carnal look on the face of a tube-loving audiophile when he, it’s always a he, first claps eyes on an attractive tube amp? … Read the full article
