Letters to the editor: Soekris, FiiO, Parks Audio, Gustard

By | March 11th, 2019|Categories: DAR|Tags: , , , , , , |

Once again, thank you to everyone who writes in to offer up their own experiences and insights.

James W. writes…

Hi

I enjoyed your article, much needed in audio circles in my opinion, about active loudspeakers, which I have consistently found to outperform passive designs. I was surprised, however, that you forgot to mention THE grandaddy and possibly still the leading exponent of active/DSP speaker design, the people who practically invented them at least for domestic use – Meridian.

If you haven’t heard a pair of Meridian DSPs, you owe it to yourself, particularly the SE speakers since you like MQA and they are probably still the only speakers designed from the ground up to take full advantage of the format.… Read the full article

Review : FiiO K3 – Legacy

By | December 20th, 2018|Categories: Headfonia|Tags: , , , , , |

The FiiO K3 desktop amp is the successor of the little FiiO E10K. In this article we look at the newest FiiO USB DAC

Disclaimer: The Fiio K3 was sent to us for the purpose of this review. The unit doesn’t need to be returned and Fiio is a site advertiser.

Four years in the making, that’s basically how long FiiO took to upgrade its desktop USB-DAC series. Sometimes it looks like the brand releases a DAP every quarter – FiiO M7 in May – FiiO M9 in september, FiiO M6 in December – and the product life of their DACs seems to be much longer.… Read the full article

Review: FiiO FH5 – The Apex

By | November 19th, 2018|Categories: Headfonia|Tags: , , , , , , , |

After the Picture Sunday post, we finally take a detailed look at the FiiO FH5, the company’s most serious In Ear Monitor to date.

Disclaimer: The FiiO FH5 was sent to me by the company itself for this review. The price of the FH5 is 260$ at this time. The Sony WM1A Walkman is the source used for sound evaluation.

Intro

For some reason, the IEMs from FiiO weren’t able to give me what I expected from them. I need to admit, they certainly did a good job from the price/performance standpoint.… Read the full article

The Fiio BTR3 is one of Fiio’s latest Bluetooth devices. Do we like it? Find out all about it now!

Disclaimer: FiiO supplied BTR3 for the purposes of this review. I paid nothing for it. It retails for 79$ and is driven by the AK4376A DAC and Qualcomm CR8675 Bluetooth receiver chip. You can find out all about it here: Portable High-Fidelity Bluetooth Amplifier-BTR3.

FiiO’s unrelenting production queue reminds me of nVidia in the late 90s, of which Tom’s Hardware asked: ‘are nVidia too fast for us?’ The difference is that FiiO are fighting a much larger, less proprietary rank of competing products and rivals.… Read the full article

The Fiio µBTR is one of Fiio’s latest units. Time to lake a closer look at the latest Fiio BT device, the µBTR!

Disclaimer: FiiO sent me the µBTR directly. I paid nothing for it. It does aptX, SBC, and AAC thanks to a Bluetooth heart comprising the Qualcomm CSR8645. The µBTR goes for 30$. You can find out all about it here: μBTR Bluetooth Receiver.

FiiO’s FB1 is n”t that good. It is a perfect reminder than even the highest-aiming of brand catalogs is lined with failures.… Read the full article
