Focal – CanJam SoCal 2019

By | July 18th, 2019|Categories: Audiohead|Tags: , , , |

Focal Stellia Headphone

Focal was standing tall on the front line, center-stage even, with a horse-shoe full of Focal headphones. Along with being the big one-ring circus of headphone listening, busy throughout the weekend, the exhibit was standing room only — no chairs. This allowed more people to crowd in, and also not stay put too long as the chairs often find show-goers settling in for a listen and a rest. I prefer the “standing-listen” format, and wish other exhibitors would follow suit.

Still the star of the show, it was Focal’s Stellia headphones riding high, and in my experience one the cleanest sounding pair of headphones I’ve heard yet.… Read the full article

A short film about CanJam NYC 2019

By | February 25th, 2019|Categories: DAR|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , |

With up to 100 exhibitors in tow, we might see Head-Fi.org’s CanJam as the travelling circus of audio shows. This headphone-centric audio show now runs in six cities around the world and throughout the year: Denver, Singapore, London, Shangai, Los Angeles and, on the second weekend of February, New York.

CanJam NYC is now in its third year and in 2019 attracted 65 exhibitors. No high-end headphone store on the planet could hope to match that level of product audition potential but with 2200 attendees spilling through the doors of the Marriott Marquis at Times Square, background chatter was bound to intrude upon definitive product assessment.… Read the full article

Florida 2019: House of Stereo, Wolf Audio Systems, TAD, Wireworld

House of Stereo brings retail sensibility to a small room, Wolf Audio Systems takes us back to the future, TAD (Technical Audio Devices) puts a fine point on detail, Ayre Acoustics continues to build a legacy, and Wireworld straps us in for a wild ride.

TAD (Technical Audio Devices) speakers almost seem to be a draw unto themselves. Several show goers I spoke to in the hallways remarked about listening to the TAD Micro Evolution 1’s in the House of Stereo room.… Read the full article

Focal’s Got A Brand New Can – CES 2019

Focal Stellia Heaphone

With the PR machine in full gear, the reaction to Focal’s new closed-back headphone called Stellia has mostly been about its color. The $3k can now sits just under the flagship Utopia ($4k) and above most of the remaining product line of hifi personal audio. The Stellia does borrow much of the driver tech from the Utopia, mainly its M-shaped beryllium dome transducer and suspension harness.

The color isn’t particularly off putting to my tastes. The diversion away from audiophile black and silver is a nice change up in a sea of consistent color schemes.… Read the full article

RMAF 2018: Eric’s Parting Shots, Wrap-Up

PTARmaf2018

With only a few hours left on Sunday, the final day of the last Rocky Mountain Audio Fest to be held at the Denver Marriott Tech Center, I become sentimental. I decide to take a moment for myself. I go for a quick stroll through the remainder of the show, I collect a few extra photos, and maybe even take in a song or two.

Here, a photo tour of my last hours at the show.

Bob Sattin’s step-up transformers for Moving Coil cartridges are well known, and their sound: legendary.… Read the full article

Command Performance AV; Focal, Naim, EAT – CAF 2018

By | November 20th, 2018|Categories: Audiohead|Tags: , , , , , , |

Focal

This was by far my favourite budget system of Capital Audiofest 2018. If you consider it’s a complete system which includes Focal and Naim and clocks in at just a hair under $18K, if you don’t count in the component rack and audio cables.

When so much of the audio show can be a rattling cage full of systems with most individual components costing $20K alone, to see a more down to earth budgeted system at a show, is more than a breath of fresh air.Read the full article

RMAF 2018: Can Jam – highlights and high-sounds

ES000860

I am not a headphone guy. Even in my youth, I was all about the room filling stereo experience. Seeking to learn more about the culture of head-fi that has sailed far off port without me, I tap my friend Jameson to be my guide.

This is a sound I can really get used to. When we talk about loudspeaker voicing we talk about the sound a brand is often known for, the way they blend and present the various frequencies of the music.… Read the full article
