Tubular Obsession Confession Time

Have you ever had an audio obsession?  Never happened to me, not much!

I became preoccupied with headphone listening for a while.  I still do it occasionally, but I really became obsessed with headphone amps.  The line of Earmax HPA’s from Germany became a particular fixation after reading a Ken Kessler review in HiFi News and Record Review many years ago.  I actually saw one in a display case at a stereo store some years ago but the shop owner didn’t offer me a chance to actually touch it, let alone listen to it.  Read the full article

Coherent Audio Winter Meet – March 4th in Hamilton

By | February 22nd, 2018|Categories: Wall of sound|Tags: , , , , , , , |

Coherent Audio is hosting another audio meet, this time at one of Hamilton’s downtown hotspots, Thirty-Three Bowen. The last two events – held in 2017 – were fun and very informative…these are free to attend and they’re a great opportunity to meet some local enthusiasts, and of course to hear Frank Fazzalari’s amazing creations – the Coherent loudspeakers. (I’m in the process of writing the Coherent Model 8 review – coming very soon!)

Nordost will be on hand, supporting once again and bringing their goodies.… Read the full article

My Audio Life (Part 8)

By Steve Graham

Tube Amp Rescue (extended mix)

A warning to those with short attention spans: This installment of My Audio Life is a bit, correction, make that very long-winded.  There are some nice pictures though, and a true story about a certain audio scribe that almost didn’t survive a social encounter.  Oh, and I talk about tube amps a bit too.

Does everyone remember the Thunderbirds of International Rescue fame?  These are to adult eyes cheesy but mostly harmless kids TV programs from the 1960’s. … Read the full article

Octogenarian Gives Birth to Triplets

I thought I’d start this installment of My Audio Life with a supermarket tabloid-style headline. Noam and I had a brief and slightly silly email exchange where he shortened My Audio Life to MAL. “Maybe we should start a Wall of Sound clothing line called MALwear”, was my response. I can see it now, hoodies, caps, T-shirts and baggy shorts so fans of this site can proudly display their support for WOS.

Maybe if I slip Drake a couple of choice 1956-vintage, NOS Valvo Hamburg 12AX7 long plates from my stash, he’ll appear in a future video sporting some MALwear.… Read the full article

Domestic Harmony: The 6th and concluding part of the Jamie and Paul series

By Steve Graham

As followers of “The Vinyl Café” on CBC radio will have heard Stuart McLean has passed away. Stuart was a well-known writer, broadcaster and humorist. My condolences go out to Stuart’s family, friends and colleagues.
I started writing this series as a bit of a tribute, albeit a poor one, to Stuart’s popular Dave and Morley series of stories in his weekly broadcasts. Though not to everyone’s taste, the “The Vinyl Café” was if nothing else harmless and charming.Read the full article

Well, many thanks to Frank Fazzalari; his audio meet was a resounding success! There was a great turnout of people, and everyone was buzzing about the excellent sounds and cool products on display. There was pizza, drinks and munchies too, and good conversation. It was awesome to see some old friends again. Here are some pics and my assorted comments.

 My Altec Adventures (continued)

By Steve Graham

The media room renovation is almost complete.  The room has essentially a nine foot ceiling.  A small part eight feet high, roughly in the centre, runs side to side and conceals duct work.  About half of the floor has been covered with Dricore™ and the rest has been raised slightly.  The blue on walls and ceiling have been covered with paint of a neutral colour, new carpet in neutral shade has been laid, new wood blinds hung and the base board and door trim reinstalled. … Read the full article

Domestic Harmony: Part 5 of the ‘Jamie and Paul’ series

By Steve Graham

The Truth about Anna

Jamie eased her way through the door of Stuart’s Stereo.  Stuart was standing behind the counter looking a bit anxious, but Jamie just thought he was expecting more teasing.

“I thought you’d chickened-out when you met Pat and then disappeared,” Stuart remarked.

“Pat and I just went next door for a coffee,” countered Jamie.  “He used to live up the street from us and we wanted to catch up a bit on family news.”

“Right, I’ll just get Anna from the back,” Stuart said, with a big smile. … Read the full article
