Fern & Roby Raven Loudspeakers | Review

By | October 19th, 2019|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

My adventures with the Fern & Roby Raven loudspeakers started last year, right before I left my house in Western New York to drive down to the Capital Audiofest in the suburbs of Washington DC. Minutes before I left, I double-checked the CAF website for the address so I could put it into the GPS and there it was, on the landing page, an image of a beautiful single-driver loudspeaker with glorious mid-century style wooden legs and a curiously wide baffle.… Read the full article

The Furutech plugs
These are indeed the best plugs in the market.

By Lam Seng Fatt

From the outset, I must say that I hate doing reviews after which I end up being the proud but poorer owner of the components reviewed. This is such a review.

I have been using the Furutech FI-11M (G) and FI-11 N1 (G) US plug and IEC power connector for many years terminated to a DIY power cable comprising four wires braided in a round braid with a ground wire coiling around the braid.… Read the full article

PranaFidelity 108a, Antipodes, Audio Conductors, Furutech | RMAF 2019

By | September 22nd, 2019|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , |

The PranaFidelity 108a active speakers retail for $34,950 per pair, which might not seem like a fantastic value to many audiophiles. But here’s some context for you. These beautiful speakers, with birch-ply enclosures made from over 800 individual layers, also feature DSP, a programmable digital crossover (onsite programming is included) and amplifiers that provide 630 total watts per speaker. Plus, these speakers sound absolutely magnificent.

Rocky Mountain Audio Fest 2019 coverage sponsored by Core Power Technologies A/V

That’s quite a feat, considering that Steven Norber was probably the only exhibitor at the 2019 Rocky Mountain Audio Fest who was playing regular redbook CDs.… Read the full article

Elite AV Distribution, Furutech, Kuzma, HRT, Plinius, Manley Labs | T.H.E. SHOW 2019

By | July 10th, 2019|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , , |

LOS ANGELES (PTA) — In the past, I’ve always found Furutech audio show exhibits to be some of the most stunning to look at, but in my experience they’ve never included active demonstration systems. This time around was a different story with Elite AV Distribution at the helm, showing a multitude of Furutech components in both passive and active use, along with an active system of brands including Kuzma, HRT, Plinius, and Manley Labs.

In the active system, I had taken note of the latest turntable from Kuzma, called the Stabi R.… Read the full article

PranaFidelity, Helius, E.A.R., Furutech | T.H.E. Show 2019

By | June 22nd, 2019|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , |

In the upcoming Summer Issue of The Occasional, I talk about all of the fantastic brands I’ve discovered over the last year or so, pretty much since I’ve joined the Part-Time Audiophile team. PranaFidelity is another one of those brands, a manufacturer that’s out there creating a buzz about their products despite my relative ignorance. At T.H.E. Show 2019 I was finally able to familiarize myself with this Denver-based company and its kind and thoughtful owner, Steven Norber, and I had that slightly obtuse feeling of someone who has just discovered something that everyone else already knows.… Read the full article

Must See Rooms, Day Two | T.H.E. SHOW 2019

By | June 8th, 2019|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

LOS ANGELES (PTA) — This year’s T.H.E. SHOW 2019 is bigger, better, and already on track to be the most newsworthy yet. There are over 1,000,000 brands exhibiting here in Long Beach — okay, okay — maybe not a million brands exactly, but 200 brands is definitely twice as many over last year. Which makes T.H.E. SHOW 2019’s event feel every bit like the premier audio show of America’s west coast. Lots of exciting manufacturer debuts are taking place at this year’s show, and we at Part-Time Audiophile are committed to bringing you the most extensive coverage of what’s NEW and out-of-this-world in our little Hi-Fi universe.… Read the full article

Crystal Cable, Siltech | High End 2019

High-End 2019 show coverage brought to you by The LSA Group

I’ve wanted to sit down and listen to Crystal Cable speakers for quite some time. This Dutch company has been manufacturing a number of premium two-way monitors, one of my favorite things, that are packed with all sorts of interesting technologies. The Minissimo Diamond-Scala monitors (20,000 euros per pair with stands), which were on display at High End 2019 in Munich, feature a novel and visually stunning form that is based on extensive computer modeling–the goal of this shape is to minimize all cabinet colorations while allowing the new SEAS drivers, including a diamond tweeter, to reach their full potential.… Read the full article

A Clean Stroke of Genius

by Venoth Nair

When you’re a Malaysian, (like me) the biggest agony for us daily will be putting up with the dusty environment that we live in. The current thrust towards modernization has reared its ugliest downside which is the plumes of filth in our air which knows no end. This irritant affects everything under the sun, even us audiophiles with our equipment being coated in thick silt which aside from being an eyesore is also detrimental to our systems in more ways than one.… Read the full article

RMAF 2018: A Critical Eye

I have completely bought into the music reproduction industry ever since I heard the difference between lamp cord as speaker wire and Monster brand wire oh so many years ago. Yes, I built Heathkit and Eico kits when I was a teenager in the middle 60’s, but really had no idea what was really going on.

During this time I was developing my ear for music. Big band and classical when I was alone, and rock when friends came over, as well as getting an inkling of how the music sounded different through different types of components and wire.… Read the full article

AXPONA 2018: VPI Fatboy dances with Gershman and VAC

By | May 2nd, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

A very Fatboy.

Originally spotted in Munich at the High End Show, we’ve been anxiously waiting to hear the VPI Fatboy tonearm. VPI dropped the Fatboy details before AXPONA in a press release, so I was jazzed to find Mat Weisfeld outside the Gershman Acoustics Room.

I asked Mat which VPI room I should listen to, and the he declared “This one of course!” He wasn’t kidding. As I walked inside room 710, I was greeted by a VPI Titan turntable loaded with the production 12-inch VPI Fatboy gimbal tonearm.… Read the full article
