Munich High-End 2019: Gold Note’s DS-10 & PH-1000

By | April 16th, 2019|Categories: DAR|Tags: , , , , , |

We know Italy’s Gold Note best for their IS-1000 super-integrated amplifier: a DAC and MM/MC phono stage that feeds a Class A/B loudspeaker amplification stage. Phil Wright reviewed it here. I previewed it a few months prior; at Munich High-End 2018 (here). I don’t attend shows to listen to gear but to scope out new products for further listening at home.

To this year’s Munich event, Gold Note will bring two new products for our previewing pleasure.… Read the full article

Gold Note CD-1000 MKII review

By | February 20th, 2019|Categories: DAR|Tags: , , , , , |

“You’ve got a what?!” said my ex-wife and daughter in unison. My son was even blunter: “Why are you reviewing obsolete technology?”. The object of their ire – Gold Note’s new CD player, the CD-1000 MKII. Did they have a point?

CD sales are struggling whilst streaming is powering ahead. And many with large CD collections have long since ripped them to a computer (haven’t they?) with the donor discs, at best, relegated to aesthetic service? And hasn’t the steady flow of new CD player models coming to market been reduced to a trickle?… Read the full article

Gold Note announces PA-1175 MK2 amplifier

By | December 2nd, 2018|Categories: DAR|Tags: , , , |

Prefer your amplification big n ballsy? Introducing a revision of the first stereo power amplifier from Florence’s Gold Note. Inside its 22kg aluminium and steel chassis, the PA-1175 MK2 sets a 640VA custom toroidal transformer to work on four ‘matched’ output transistors per channel for a fully-balanced circuit that nets 200wpc into 8 Ohms, extendable to 520wpc when bridged into mono.

According to the Italian manufacturer, a proprietary “BIAS constant current generator” ensures high-current delivery, low distortion of <0.01%THD @ 20Hz-20kHz and a slew rate – “the maximum rate at which an amplifier can respond to an abrupt change of input level” – of 20V/μs.… Read the full article

Burning Amps and Summer Ghosts: Summertime at PTA

The Outer Banks, NC

Sea oats dot the dunes along the National Seashore in Salve, NC

Summertime. Hot hazy humid days. But it’s more “wet” than anything else, this year. Still, it’s summer. Time for lolling about, also known as “resting and rejuvenation”. Time to not do chores. Time for memories. Ghosts.

“I’m pretty sure it’s not supposed to do that.” The “that” in question was flames. About 4′ high. Coming out of the back of an amplifier. Amplifier flambé. Good times.

Summer Logo

There’s even a sweet summer logo

In retrospect, it was lucky I was in the room when the amp decided to start its 4th of July Spectacular in my basement.… Read the full article

KLIAVS 2018: Two exciting new brands

By | July 25th, 2018|Categories: Av2day|Tags: , , , , , , |

By Lam Seng Fatt

While going from room to room at the recent KLIAVS 2018, I spotted at least two new products which are exciting.

One was the Italian-made Gold Note turntable in the Audio Perfectionist room. Just next to all those blue dials (aka Mcintosh) was the Gold Note Giglio turntable. I am not sure if Gold Note turntables have ever been sold in Malaysia before, but as far as I can recall, this is the first time I have seen a Gold Note turntable here.… Read the full article

The music centre re-invented: Gold Note’s IS-1000

By | July 4th, 2018|Categories: DAR|Tags: , , , , , , , |

It’s all in the hyphen.

● Super integrated; a nice amplifier.

● Super-integrated; an all-in-one – amplifier / DAC / streamer / phono stage in one box. The music centre reinvented.

The second bullet refers to the audio industry’s response to real-world listening rooms. Spaces that are shared. Where books, furniture, TVs and a plethora of other things have equal footing with audio hardware. Where a forest of kit just doesn’t work.

It’s also recognition that audio alchemy is not for everyone.… Read the full article

AXPONA 2018: Best of The Show, Wrap-Up, and Why I am an Audiophile

Audio shows are more than new gear releases and demonstrations to me. They are a chance to connect with the strange personalities that embody what it means to be an eccentric. Sometimes our interests can be socially unfortunate, but it’s during these few moments of the year at audio shows where we audiophiles can feel normal in our priorities, lusts, and musical tastes.

AXPONA 2018 proved to be our largest display of geekdom yet.… Read the full article

AXPONA 2018: Italians do it better, Toska Audio presents Gold Note

By | June 7th, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , |

ES000175

I personally have never seen a Gold Note product at an audio show, and I doubt anyone who habitually remains stateside has seen one either. Making their US debut at Axpona with a famously European style and reputation, Gold Note gives us a distinctly Italian music listening experience. Another completely one branded system at the show, this unique powerhouse system will rock your Marcoliani’s off.

Gold Note was taken on by Toska Audio about one year ago. Already a well known brand in Europe when Peter Mulligan of Toska fell in love with their intelligent phono pre-amp.… Read the full article

The Gold Note PH-10 Phono Stage and Mediterraneo Turntable

By | November 30th, 2017|Categories: Positive Feedback|Tags: , , , , , , |

The man knows his business. Truly, the Gold Note PH-10 Phono Stage is a stunning bargain, and the partnering Gold Note Mediterraneo turntable is an absolute delight. Positive Feedback Editor Dave Clark’s laudatory review of the Gold Note PH-10 (HERE) and equally favorable column on the Gold Note Mediterraneo turntable (HERE) could have made life awfully difficult for me. Dave summed up his and Carol’s time with the PH-10, “The PH-10 made me want to turn up the volume to hear more and more of whatever we had on the turntable.” I sure hoped I wasn’t the guy who had to write, “Nope, both products suck!”

Uh, yeah, that wasn’t going to happen, anyway.… Read the full article
