Luxman, Harbeth and Melco – Florida 2019

By | February 19th, 2019|Categories: Audiohead|Tags: , , , , , , |

Luxman L-509x integrated amplifier

I’ve become a recent interloper into the cult that is Harbeth loudspeakers. I’ve also been a long time fan of Luxman electronics, so this exhibit pairing was bound from the start to find favor with my heart and ears.

The big news from Luxman was a slew of new products, starting with the new PD-151 ($3,895 USD) turntable. A belt driven affair, with 33/45/78 independant speed control, a custom Jelco tonearm and a universal head shell. The Cartridge used for demonstration was Ortofon’s moving coil Cadenza Red ($1,300 USD).… Read the full article

Darko.Audio podcast #12 – Small speakers

By | December 3rd, 2018|Categories: DAR|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Sometimes we want steak, other times only sushi will do.

And so it goes with loudspeakers: we might lust for (full-range) floorstanders but either our room’s acoustics and/or our aesthetic sensibilities say otherwise: only standmounts can be accommodated.

Like food, it’s better to have too little than too much.

In our latest episode of the Darko.Audio podcast, Jeff Dorgay of TONEAudio and I discuss small loudspeakers with our informal chat romping through the following products (and more):

47 Labs Lens
Atacama Nexus 6i
Blumenstein Audio
DENSOTen Eclipse 510Z MKII
ELAC Debut 2.0
ELAC Uni-Fi UB5
Genelec 8341 ‘The Ones’
Genelec GTwo
Harbeth P3/ESR
JERN 14DS
KEF LSX
Michael Green Room Tunes
Martin Logan Motion 4i
Paradigm Monitor SE Atom
Pioneer SP-BS22-LR
ProAc Tablette 10/Signature:
Raidho Acoustics D1.1
Sonus Faber Sonetto I
Sound Anchors
Wharfedale Diamond 9.1 / 10

A must listen for any apartment dweller or standmount loudspeaker enthusiast:

CAF 2018: Harbeth, Rogers Fidelity, Acoustic Signature and the Experiment

By | November 25th, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , |

You may have already read about the great mystery in Room 323 at the Capital Audiofest from Eric Franklin Shook of PTA and David Blumenstein from Dagogo. These two audio scribes conducted a sonic experiment of sorts, borne from the idea that something in the sound of this system—Rogers Fidelity 34S1 amplifier and PA-1A phono stage, Harbeth 30.2 Anniversary loudspeakers, Acoustic Signature Double X turntable, Bel Canto DAC, Accusound cables and Wolf Audio music server—didn’t quite click.

Eric approached me first—he knew I was a big Harbeth fan and thought I’d be particularly interested in the changes he and David made to the system.… Read the full article

RMAF 2018: Fidelis Music Systems, Exposure, Acoustic Signature and Those Amazing Stenheim Monitors

By | November 17th, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , |

I’ve known the folks at Fidelis Music Systems in Nashua, New Hampshire for many years. Not only were they one of my top dealers when I was a distributor but they also distribute, in turn, some of my favorite brands of all time such as Harbeth, LFD and Palmer. I’ve visited owner Walter Swanbon and his very knowledgeable crew at the store a handful of times, and I know I’ll always be treated to great sound from interesting companies—and not from the usual suspects, which is one of the things that makes Fidelis so special.… Read the full article

Fidelis AV, Rogers High Fidelity, Harbeth, and Accusound – CAF 2018

By | November 8th, 2018|Categories: Audiohead|Tags: , , , , , , |

by Eric Shook

The most interesting room in the world.

Okay, maybe not the world, but the show… good possibility. Something strange was going on in Room #323 at Capital Audiofest 2018. Was it as strange or erie as Room #237 in Kubrick’s version of The Shining? No.

On Friday afternoon in the Capital Audiofest universe, there was something amiss in the system of Harbeth, Roger’s High Fidelity, Accusound assembled by Fidelis AV. There was no magic, no real bass to speak of, and the remaining upper ends were wonky at best.… Read the full article

There are over 1,000,000 brands exhibiting here at Capital Audiofest … okay, okay, — I don’t know how many brands exactly, but it does seem like a lot this year. Which makes 2018’s event feel every bit like the “premier show of North America’s eastern coast”, that we often claim it to be. Fear not, as the rag-tag band of misfits from Part-Time Audiophile are here to be your surrogate audio show guide.

Here are some surefire rooms to get you started off on the right foot.Read the full article

RMAF 2018: Vinnie Rossi, Triode Wire Labs, Harbeth; More than the sum of its parts

Vinnie Rossi was showing off his latest and greatest L2 Signature Preamplifiers and L2 Monoblocks, which could handle a slew Harbeth speakers (big and small) extraordinarily well. At Rocky Mountain Audio Fest the Harbeth 40.2 Anniversary speakers flat-out rocked the show when tethered — via Triode Wire Labs cable — to Vinnie’s new mono-block powerhouses. Without any doubt, a must see (and hear) exhibit at the show.

Vinnie Rossi L2 Signature Preamp and Monoblocks – RMAF 2018

By | October 23rd, 2018|Categories: Audiohead|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , |

We saw Vinnie Rossi’s L2 mono blocks poke their head out of the R&D shell at AXPONA this year, but the full dual mono rig with new matching L2 preamplifier was on display at RMAF. Paired once again with the well-loved Harbeth series of loudspeakers, the big 40.2 anniversary editions ($18k) were up to bat when I entered the room.

The new pre starts at $15k and along with the signature monos (also $15k/pair) is very much a statement piece from Vinnie, not just in price but in design as well.… Read the full article

Vinnie Rossi, New Statement Monos And Pre – AXPONA 2018

By | April 20th, 2018|Categories: Audiohead|Tags: , , , , , , , |

Vinnie Rossi has me all tied up with the idea that I have to get my hands on a pair of Harbeths. Why? Because every time I hear his near field presentation at an audio show, it sound like angels singing…if angels knew 80s and 90s hits well enough, that is. Vinnie keeps the track selection fresh, fun and high fidelity. He knows now when he sees me that a good throwback to either of the previously mentioned decades will put a smile on my face and his selection is ripe with options.… Read the full article
