CEDIA 2018: dCS Bartok first listen

dCS Bartok

Different from most of the industry, dCS products seem to blossom after release, as they receive a stream of hardware, software, and firmware updates over the years. This concept didn’t crystallize in my mind until I spent some quality time with dCS Debussy DAC while I was reviewing the dCS Network Bridge. The dCS Debussy has been around for nearly a decade, but continues to get updates including support for higher sample rates of 384kHz and 2xDSD.

In 2018, dCS will finally replace the very fine dCS Debussy with the new dCS Bartok DAC, which draws a clear heritage from its big brothers dCS Rossini and dCS Vivaldi DACs.… Read the full article

CEDIA 2018: Simaudio Moon 390 hits a GRAND SLAM

By | September 11th, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , |

We’re fortunate to get to learn, listen and play with lots of great products.  But sometimes we come across something that surprises us.  In the Roon Labs booth at CEDIA, they had assembled an army of the best streaming DACs for attendees to listen to over Audeze headphones. In that sea of great devices, one stood out from the rest….

All of the usual suspects were lined up the booth: dCS, T+A, MyTek, Bryston, Moon by Simaudio to name a few.… Read the full article

Oppo Does MQA, Klipsch Launches New-Vintage Headphone Amp

By | November 28th, 2017|Categories: Audiohead|Tags: , , , , , , , , |

Oppo has never been shy when it comes to new audio software. Extensive exposure to their products over the past 7 years brings a quick name drop of multiple codex, early chipset adoption and a myriad of tech that has always pleased and delighted any fan of the spec page. Now the DAC/AMP/Disc-spinner company is adding MQA to the list, being the first to drop the high resolution folding technology into a Blu-Ray player. The Oppo flagship UDP-205 brings the new capabilities (via a firmware update) for use through the player’s “Music” application.… Read the full article

RMAF 2017: SPL Offers New Features and Price Points

spl3Outside of the big CanJam ballroom at RMAF, several manufacturers like iFi Audio, Centrance, and SPL were setup  and the extra space there (and proximity to Pint Brothers bar) was welcome. SPL offers some of my favourite headphone amplifiers so I had to stop by.  SPL is a German company who seems to be as much, or more popular with the pro-audio community as it is the hifi-enthusiast market.  Their Phonitor became a dream piece for me when a friend here in Atlanta bought one and I heard it.… Read the full article

RMAF 2017: Audioengine offers high-end performance, budget pricing

FullSizeRender-871-1

More than a few audio companies have set sail with the simple mission of delivering budget gear, only to get lured into sometimes-rocky shores by the siren call of the higher-end market. Such temptations make it even more laudable when an entry-level manufacturer stays the course, such as Audioengine.

Audioengine has been enjoying strong tailwinds for a while now as it navigates its narrow shipping lane in the audiophile ocean. The company makes a line of mainly self-powered budget speakers and accessories that are so good at what they do, it’s easy to take them for granted.… Read the full article

RMAF 2017: HiFi Man Surprises on the High and the Low

HFM10

I ran into Andy Regan at the Pint Brothers bar at RMAF on Friday when a good number of us audio nerds were having beers and a very late lunch.  He said he had moved on to HiFi Man along with his wife Sue and that I should stop by.  He really didn’t have to twist my arm.  HiFi Man always has an extra-wide booth at RMAF and I usually hear good sound so it was already on my list.  Seeing Andy and Sue was icing on the cake.… Read the full article
