Hifi-Centre-Saturday-FEATURED

Through the looking glass with Gryphon.

What a difference a day makes.

In the weather at least, because despite going from a torrential downpour to blazing sunshine, and blue skies, there was no difference in the turnout at the Vancouver Audio Festival. Saturday’s dawn broke with yellow rays of warmth slanting through my bedroom blinds, and a smile that spread slowly across my face as I became secure in the knowledge that the onslaught of greyness that has plagued the Wet Coast this spring seemed to finally be at an end.… Read the full article

Hi-fi-Centre-Friday-FEATURED

McIntosh Labs and YG Acoustics.

First the rain came straight down. Then the rain came sideways. Then it seemed to be coming up at me from the ground as I ran from a coffee shop to make my way to Hi-Fi Centre for the opening of the Vancouver Audio Festival late Friday afternoon. I was reminded of a scene in Forrest Gump where he describes similar rain experiences in Vietnam during his time in the war, and I was silently thankful to be taking shelter from the storm in warm, and cozy environs with like-minded audiophiles.… Read the full article

Magnepan 30.7 Demo Event at Hifi Centre

Somnambulists.

A lot of them. Walking in circles, and randomly bumping into each other.

That’s what the Magnepan 30.7 demo event at Hifi Centre in Vancouver would have looked like if you peeked through the round window in the door to the room, and didn’t know what was going on. It was where Magnepan marketing manager Wendell Diller was hosting the demo event, and it was packed.

Luckily, I had been in the room when Diller gave his introduction to the company’s new flagship magnetic-planar loudspeakers, and understood why the 20-plus people inside the room where slowly shuffling all around it with slightly confused looks on their faces.… Read the full article

Something Wicked This Way Comes.

Remember the book by science-fiction legend Ray Bradbury? The story arcs through the tale of a small town gripped in blood-chilling fear following the arrival of a spectral travelling carnival lead by the sinister Mr. Dark who has the power to grant people’s secret desires – at a cost that is only revealed to be too high once the deal is done.

I couldn’t help but remember the classic novel when Hifi Centre owner Igor Kivritsky mentioned that there was a Magnepan Road Show travelling across North America featuring the Minnesota company’s flagship, and award-winning 30.7 planar-magnetic loudspeakers.

Vancouver Audio Festival 2017: A Hifi Centre Interview

By | July 9th, 2017|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Igor Kivritsky wanted to make a difference with the Vancouver Audio Festival, and bring some of the expertise that the staff at the Hifi Centre had to the uninitiated of high fidelity. The goal was to make an audio show accessible to the average music listener, not just audiophiles. So when he started putting together the festival, he kept one thing in mind: making it fun.

Vancouver Audio Festival 2017: Sonos wants to get you into great sound

PLAY:5 making serious inroads for the sub-$1,000 home system.

Sonos had a strong showing at the Vancouver Audio Festival with it’s PLAY:5 speaker system, and the new PLAYBASE television sound base. I’ve seen, and heard the budget-oriented PLAY:1, PLAY:3, and PLAY:5 speakers a number of times, but almost always singly or in different rooms throughout a home, and the 5s were always on their side… not in the Hifi Centre demo room though. No, this time the PLAY:5s were on dedicated speaker stands, and had a matching wireless SUB.… Read the full article

Lifestyle. The phrase keeps creeping into the audiophile conversation. Seems that regular people are being courted by traditional, stalwart high-fidelity manufacturers more, and more. There’s been a realization that there’s a lot of money to be made from a lifestyle audio product designed to woo neophytes listening to TV sound bars, and smart phone docks into spending hard-earned cash for something that sounds better.
