REVIEW – Boenicke W5 SE Loudspeakers

By | August 28th, 2018|Categories: Hifipig|Tags: , , , , , , |

Made in Switzerland the Boenicke W5SE are a very small speaker with a reasonably high price tag of £4595. Stuart and Linette Smith take a listen.

When Ian Ringstead who reviews for Hifi Pig heard that we had got these diminutive speakers (they ae only 2.8L in volume) from Swiss manufacturer Boenicke, he was to say the least a little bit green with envy commenting that they were his favourite small speaker when he has heard them at shows and demonstrations.

Yamaha NS-5000 Loudspeakers – Part II

By | March 8th, 2018|Categories: Av2day|Tags: , , , , |

I am sure every audiophile encounters a number of watershed moments or events in their Hi-Fi journey. These are times when the audiophile’s belief is given a big jolt, and his/her audio related perceptions, concept, and/or knowledge took a leap forward. These moments can come from a fortuitous listening session with an extraordinarily well performing system, a particularly fruitful discussion/debate on Hi-Fi, or, more commonly, the encounter with a piece of outstanding Hi-Fi hardware.

.

For the Hi-Fi hardware bit, I have my fair share of such experiences – such as the time when I was frustrated with the my system and then chanced upon a pre-power amplifier pair in the form of the Pass Labs Aleph L and 3, the little duo absolutely soothed my musical nerves and brought so much joy to my music listening, day after day.… Read the full article

NS5000-1

By Tan TE

.

The Yamaha NS-5000 loudspeakers made their debut in Malaysia during the KLIAV Show 2017 last July. They proceeded to garner much accolades from show-goers and the local Hifi press. I was intrigued when I saw and listened to them in Hifi Creations’ room. Their design brief, the technology infused in them and their sound quality no less, was impressive enough that I eagerly wanted a pair to experience for myself in the privacy of my own listening room.… Read the full article

REVIEW – AVID Hifi Pellere Phonostage

By | November 29th, 2016|Categories: Hifipig|Tags: , , , , , , , |

At £2500 the AVID Hifi Pellere Phono-stage borrows a lot of its make up from its more expensive sibling costing £4300, but does it cut the right kind of groove? Janine Elliot finds out.

“Little sacrifice, because this phono-stage is by no means the economy edition. This is a serious piece of kit. Only that it is £1800 cheaper. By starting with the best and adapting it to the price point this is a Bentley, and not an Austin Allegro…”

REVIEW – Roksan K3 Digital To Analogue Converter

By | November 28th, 2016|Categories: Hifipig|Tags: , , , , , |

Dominic Marsh takes a listen to Roksan’s £1250 K3 Digital to Analogue Converter.

“Enter then the Roksan K3 Digital to Analogue Converter as the subject of this review and it is good example of how a set of compromises ends up as a positive entity bigger than the sum of its components.  Intrigued?  Read on….”

REVIEW – Nord One UP NC500 DMST Power Amplifier

By | November 22nd, 2016|Categories: Hifipig|Tags: , , , , , , |

Class D is gaining a good deal of momentum in the audio world. Lionel Payne listens to the the Nord One UP NC500 DMST stereo power amplifier costing £1409.

“When I first received the Nord One UP it was in Revision B form and came to me with Burson V5 and Sparkos Labs SS3602 as alternative op-amps. These op-amps are interchangeable internally through an eight pin DIP socket and it takes literally a few minutes maximum to change over. I found the Burson op-amp very similar to my old feelings of Class D amplifiers; all being rather cold and clinical affairs , albeit with a fabulous tonality.

REVIEW – Russ Andrews BMU3000 Balanced Mains Unit

By | November 18th, 2016|Categories: Hifipig|Tags: , , , , |

Balanced Mains Units are used extensively in professional studios and are starting to make their mark in domestic audio situations. Janine Elliot gets her life in balance and plugs in the Russ Andrews BMU 3000 costing £3599.

“Reviewing cables, mains conditioners and balanced mains units is bound to irk some hifi addicts, particularly engineers.  I, like most reviewers, have suffered the displeasure of the few who believe all wire sounds the same and that travelling past your local Homebase for mains taming devices is quite simply a waste of money and petrol.

REVIEW – SYSTEM-1 From Code Acoustics

By | November 18th, 2016|Categories: Hifipig|Tags: , , , , |

SYSTEM-1 from Code Acoustics is a high quality 3-way active speaker, with off-board electronics module including crossovers and amplifiers. It is UK made and costs £6350 direct from the manufacturer. Ian Ringstead turns up the volume and puts the SYSTEM-1 though its paces.

“Ceri kindly let me borrow his iPad and an Auralic streamer to try out digital high resolution music files as I use CD and turntable, being a traditionalist and stuck in my ways. The streaming worked well with the system, but I must say I was more than happy with the results I got from my Sony CDPXE3000ES using the SPDIF input.”

ATC SCM7 Loudspeakers

By | February 24th, 2016|Categories: Av2day|Tags: , , , , , |

Article by Tan TE

.SCM7 3

ATC is one of those long running loudspeaker brands that I have not had the experience with in my own system. I heard ATC’s bigger creations in Willy’s and Lam’s systems in the past and was suitably impressed, so I decided to loan a pair of ATC’s entry level loudspeakers, the SCM7, from its local distributor, Hi-Way Laser, to experience for myself.

.

The current SCM7 is the third generation of ATC entry level speakers that bear the same name.… Read the full article
