Colour me impressed with Beyerdynamic’s Lagoon

By | September 8th, 2018|Categories: DAR|Tags: , , , , , |

When Beyerdynamic’s Lagoon, the 94-year old German manufacturer’s first ever pair of active noise cancelling (ANC) headphones, begin shipping later this year, they’ll arrive with a €399 price tag, touch-sensitive earpad controls, a USB-C recharging port, 24-hour battery life, advanced Bluetooth codec support (AAC and aptX Low Latency, but no LDAC) and a carry case into which they fold. None too dissimilar to the Sony WH-1000XM3 also launched at IFA 2018.

Setting the Lagoon apart from their Japanese rivals are circumaural ear-cups whose internal light-guide system shows us L and R channels, Bluetooth pairing status and battery life.… Read the full article

IFA 2018: RHA’s fountain of youth, CL2 Planar IEM

By | September 7th, 2018|Categories: DAR|Tags: , , , , , |

“Hitherto unheard transparency and dynamic thrust from an IEM whose in-ear fit is as stable as it is unobtrusive” — a conclusion drawn by yours truly after listening to RHA’s recently announced CL2 Planar IEM at the Glasgow manufacturer’s IFA 2018 booth.

Done and dusted? Go buy a pair?

Not so fast. My RHA audition was conducted using lossless streams from Qobuz running on an (audiophile-grade) LG V30 smartphone – David Bowie, LCD Soundsystem, MGMT and Yosi Horikawabut from a very, very noisy show floor (see video below) and for only the briefest of periods.… Read the full article

Technics teases SACD/Network player at IFA 2018

By | September 5th, 2018|Categories: DAR|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , |

VU meters. They give us something to look at as music plays. Who wouldn’t want that? Technics clearly do — and according to the Japanese company’s European arm, showing at IFA 2018 in Berlin, so do their customer base.

Consumer demand is reportedly why Technics’ latest integrated amplifier – the SU-G700, 2 x 140wpc into 4 Ohms – sports two large VU meters on its front panel. Above those, an OLED display announces input selection which runs the gamut from analogue to digital: line-level analogue, MM phono and coaxial/TOSLINK/USB to feed the amplifier’s internal DAC.… Read the full article

iFi Audio brings ‘Glastonbury’ to IFA 2018

By | September 4th, 2018|Categories: DAR|Tags: , , , , , |

Glastonbury. Fields and festivities. Cows and chords. Mud and music. For the UK’s iFi Audio, the iconic UK music festival is synonymous with epically wide soundstaging. A quality that, according to company CEO and founder Thorsten Loesch, can be found at the core of his company’s forthcoming loudspeaker-in-a-box.

Giving us widescreen performance are a pair of side-firing drivers, a pair of front-firing drivers and – added since the unit’s Munich High-End debut – a pair of downward-facing passive radiators. Feed it music via Bluetooth, WiFi, Ethernet, USB stick, microSD card, a raft of digital inputs or an analogue input.… Read the full article

The G7 One is another audiophile smartphone from LG

By | September 4th, 2018|Categories: DAR|Tags: , , , , , |

Burning the heels of the G7 ThinQ (‘Think’) and the V30 (launched at IFA 2017), LG has this week announced the forthcoming availability (remember this word) of the G7 One – a pseudo-flagship smartphone with a Snapdragon 835 processor, a notched 6.1-inch/1440 px touchscreen and super loud in-built speakers.

For Android aficionados, the headline is the operating system itself. The G7 One is a fully-fledged member of Google’s Android One program: it sports a ‘naked’ Android OS that foregoes LG’s additional skin.… Read the full article

The DAP days are over (Part 4: Sony WH-1000XM3)

By | September 3rd, 2018|Categories: DAR|Tags: , , , , |

For the second successive IFA with their B**e-beating noise-cancelling headphones, Sony gives lie to the English proverb that ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’. Once again, ‘a change is as good as a rest’.

In Q3 2016, Sony wowed us with their first noise cancelling headphone: the MDR-1000X. A mere twelve months later came an updated version. The WH-1000XM2 stuck to the MDR’s winning formula but took on minor improvements inside and out as well as adding a control app for smartphones and tablets.… Read the full article

IFA 2018: Sony launch €8500, 2.5kg DMP-Z1 Walkman

By | September 1st, 2018|Categories: DAR|Tags: , , , , , , |

At €8500/US$8000/£8000, the DMP-Z1 is easily Sony’s most expensive Walkman to date. The press release tells us that it is a battery powered device. From the accompanying press shots scream a large gold volume knob with neighbouring 4.4mm balanced and 3.5mm unbalanced headphone outputs.

However, only on the ground in Berlin at IFA 2018 do we get to see just how big and heavy the DMP-Z1 actually is. Sat in a glass case, the new Walkman fails to be dwarfed by Sony’s TA-ZH1ES desktop headphone amplifier and apparently tips the scales at a whopping 2.5kg (5.5lbs)!… Read the full article

Future-Fi at IFA 2018: DALI Callisto 2C loudspeakers

By | August 31st, 2018|Categories: DAR|Tags: , , , , , , |

DALI. Not the surrealist painter but Danish Audiophile Loudspeaker Industries. This loudspeaker company wears the A-word proudly but at IFA 2018 I stepped over their new range of passive loudspeakers – the Oberon – to take a closer look at the Callisto 2C (€2800/pair): a 2.5-way active whose amplifiers and drivers were developed simultaneously.

On the inside, a DSP crossover splits the incoming audio signal between Class D amplifiers that drive a wood fibre mid-bass driver and soft-dome / ribbon tweeters.… Read the full article

Go hard or go Bluetooth with RHA’s CL2 Planar-magnetic IEM

By | August 23rd, 2018|Categories: DAR|Tags: , , , , |

A news story in three parts.

Part 1. Glasgow’s RHA (Reid Heath Acoustics) want to introduce us to their latest universal fit IEM: the CL2 Planar that puts a 1cm-wide, 10-micrometre-thick planar-magnetic driver inside an injection-moulded zirconium shell (for minimal weight and maximum scratch resistance). A flagship earphone with a flagship price: €799.95.

Planar-magnetic drivers, as favoured by the likes of Audeze and Mr Speakers, are known to be fast and highly transparent but their inclusion in closed-back IEMs is less common.… Read the full article
