T.H.E. Show 2019

Southern California has an audio show problem. It’s not new, and it’s not clear why. Perhaps it’s the slow-burn of internecine rivalries, sketchy venue selection and promotion (remember LAX?), or just plain bad luck. In any case it shouldn’t have to be this way in a region so densely populated—a virtual playground of art and culture that can boast sunny weather all year long. More likely, however, the issue isn’t just Los Angeles per se. It’s timing. Closely following the two biggest trade shows of the year, AXPONA Chicago and Munich High End, is not a recipe for success.… Read the full article

Building a Listening Room

Building a Listening Room

Building a dedicated space for music listening is the ultimate commitment to the hobby. It’s expensive and complex, and when you’re finished there’s no guarantee that the room will sound good. But if you take that plunge and the stars align, a room specifically designed for optimizing sound quality can allow a high-end system to realize its greatest potential. I recently realized a lifelong goal of building a serious listening room and will share my experience with you. Although I had built two homes before with dedicated rooms, this one is more ambitious.… Read the full article

Munich High End 2019: Seen and Heard

Editor's Note: The intended format of this report is a photo essay. My full, more traditional text-driven report on Electronics and sounds at the show will be forthcoming. Scroll and enjoy! Lifestyle Demos Like it or not, "lifestyle" audio continues to emerge, not only in the form of new products such as all-in-ones, but also could be seen in more serious audio setups from venerable companies who sought to create a more pleasingly home-like environment inside their demo rooms. Color Rules The use of vivid color—burnt orange and red in particular—for serious audio components' materials and/or finishes stood out at …… Read the full article

Q&A with Hans-Joachim Voss of Accustic Arts

What ignited your interest in the high end? The music side or the electronics side? My interest in music has accompanied me since my early youth. I’ve always enjoyed listening to music and attending concerts regularly. During my school years I worked part-time in a music store. This allowed me to buy records inexpensively. It was here that I bought my first hi-fi system, which I improved over the years. Today I still like to go to rock concerts, and every year I invite our partners for a weekend in the summer to the “Black Sheep” rock music festival near …… Read the full article

AXPONA 2019: Electronics

It’s no secret that AXPONA has been experiencing a growth spurt. Last year marked a move to a new venue, the Renaissance Schaumberg Convention Center Hotel, in Schaumberg, IL, outside Chicago. In scope, attendance, and number of exhibits, it is giving RMAF in Denver a run for the money (though that show will also be held in a new, much larger venue this year, the Gaylord Rockies Resort and Convention Center). Although attendance was strong and the vibe positive, AXPONA is one helluva huge show.… Read the full article

2019 Editors' Choice Awards: Integrated Systems

Riva Arena/Festival $249 (optional Arena battery, $99)/$499 Riva’s two, wireless, multi-room systems in the Wand series offer stunning sound quality from small packages. The compact Arena ($249) and the larger Festival ($499) are both easy to set up and use; just connect via Google, AirPlay, or Bluetooth, and begin streaming music. Both have deeper bass than expected from their compact enclosures, and both play loudly with ease. The Festival is particularly impressive. With 200W of power, a solid wooden case, and a maximum SPL of 106dB, it almost sounds like a pair of floorstanding speakers.… Read the full article
