My KL International AV Show 2019 Experience

This year was not good to me when it came to AV as I was bogged down with work during the KL International AV Show 2019. But nonetheless I still freed myself for 4 hours at least to get there and dip my foot into the affair, what with the new venue and all. Admittedly, doing so was a double-edged sword as, I was ecstatic to get a taste but leaving the event left me wanting more with no capacity to quench my thirst.… Read the full article

Not many people may be aware of this but there was one common component among the top three AV demo rooms involving AV Designs, Maxx AV and Sound Fusion. They were all using the JVC DLA-N5 native 4K projector.

The JVC DLA-N5 offers 4096 x 2160 native resolution and also provides crucial HDR10 and HLG gamma support.

As with all JVC home theatre projectors the N5 features the company’s proprietary D-ILA picture format device firing into an all-glass lens.… Read the full article

KLIAVS 2019: Best of…AV systems

By | August 2nd, 2019|Categories: Av2day|Tags: , , , , , , , , |

And now there are three…It used to be a battle between two AV specialists – AV Designs vs Maxx AV – for the coveted ‘Best of Show’ award. Of course, once a while, Audio Art from Ipoh would join in the fray.

But last year, really serious competition emerged in the form of Sound Fusion from Kuching, Sarawak. Last year, Sound Fusion’s Tan Chung Wei collaborated with his West Malaysian distributor Movee Space to hold demos at the KL International AV Show and it was a huge success with long queues of AV enthusiasts forming outside the room for the chance to experience his demo.… Read the full article

KLIAVS 2019: Best of…hi-fi systems

By | August 1st, 2019|Categories: Absolute Sound, Av2day|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Despite the fact that the KLIAVS 2019 was held in a different hotel which posed lots of problems to exhibitors in terms of room acoustics, it was quite a successful show in terms of overall sound and image quality.

This year, I feel that there is no overall winner simply because the exhibitors really became competitive and set up dazzling top-class systems to try to outdo each other. I chatted with several audiophiles who were at the show and read the comments on Facebook and there were differing views on which room had the best hi-fi system.… Read the full article

KLIAVS 2019: Coping with bad room acoustics

By | July 31st, 2019|Categories: Av2day|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , |

By Lam Seng Fatt

Last weekend’s KL International AV Show was held at a new venue – Vistana Hotel – and the exhibitors had to cope with the different and challenging room acoustics, especially those who booked the hotel rooms.

As the hotel rooms were shaped almost like a cube with a squarish floor-plan, the exhibitors had issues trying to solve the bass boom factor. Many of the systems on demo suffered from bass boom. For example, the Dong Fong/Audio Note Malaysia room which featured the Brinkmann turntable, a Vitus integrated amp and the very large standmount Graham Audio LS5/8 speakers sounded good, but the boomy bass spoilt the listening experience.… Read the full article

KLIAVS 2019: A few new toys…

By | July 30th, 2019|Categories: Av2day|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

There were several ‘toys’ that were new to most Malaysian audiophiles at last weekend’s AV show and many of them were analogue sources.

In Centre Circle’s room, there were two turntables fitted with cartridges which had lights glowing like headlights. These were the DS Audio optical cartridges which were launched in Malaysia quite recently.

The DS Audio DS-W2 was used with the VPI Prime Signature turntable while the flagship DS Master1 was used with the VPI HW-40 Anniversary turntable.… Read the full article

KLIAVS 2019: Vintage gear on show

By | July 29th, 2019|Categories: Av2day|Tags: , , |

At the coffeehouse in the lobby of Hotel Vistana, a row of vintage hi-fi components was on display. These brought back memories for many older audiophiles who went for the Kuala Lumpur International AV Show last weekend.

I remember with fondness at least one of the components on display there – the Rega Planar 2 with S-shaped tonearm. I bought that from Trikay when they were still in Asiajaya shopping mall and later traded it in for the Rega Planar 3 with RB300 tonearm which I am still using today.… Read the full article

KLIAVS 2019: Part three…

By | July 28th, 2019|Categories: Av2day|Tags: , , , , |

Today, I visited the better-sounding rooms again and I have been extremely impressed by a pre and power amp – the Nagra HD preamp and HD monoblock power amp.

The Swiss-made Nagra are expensive, but they are super high-end and are in the same league as the FM Acoustics, Soulution and CH Precision. Are the Nagra HD components better than the competitors? I don’t know, but in Perfect Hi-Fi’s system, the Nagras made the Sonus Faber floorstanders sound so dynamic and fast that I immediately realised I was listening to something really great.… Read the full article

KLIAVS 2019: Part two…

By | July 27th, 2019|Categories: Av2day|Tags: , , , |

By Lam Seng Fatt

Today I heard a few systems – both two-channel music and home theatre – that would surely end up in the list of ‘Best of Show’. I also saw and heard for the first time in Malaysia the omnidirectional Muraudio Domain Omni PX2 which I had encountered at the Munich High End show in 2017.

There is another pair of omnidirectional speakers at the AV show – the Avantages Audio Cesar in CMY Audio & Visual’s large exhibition space on the third floor of Vistana Hotel, the venue of the AV show.… Read the full article

KLIAVS 2019: Day one…

By | July 27th, 2019|Categories: Av2day|Tags: , |

By Lam Seng Fatt

On the first day, I went up to the 6th and 5th floors of Vistana Hotel first and walked down the stairs to the third floor and also managed to visit a few rooms on the second floor. I heard some good sounds and saw some snippets of good movies. I have already come up with an initial list of ‘Best of show’ candidates, but I shall visit some rooms a few more times tomorrow to confirm if what I heard and saw on the first day of the AV show were really deserving of being considered to be among the best.… Read the full article
