A world within the show, a Quintessence Audio LTD exhibit only requires a few steps physically (none socially) to transport you to a wonderland of high-end audio toys. For one weekend a year, the Chicago area showroom gathers up its roots and re-plants itself large at Axpona. Often taking up an entire floor of the show tower, this year Mick Survance and his crew set up shop at the proper nexus of the audio show traffic.

Given enough time in any industry, navigating the metaphorical road that is predictable success becomes intuition.… Read the full article

AXPONA 2018: PranaFidelity, a one man powerhouse of sound

By | May 1st, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , , |

Fresh and original, much of the story from here forth revolves around that feeling. Steven Norber is not only the founder of PranaFidelity, he is also their head designer. Prana is unique for a small company in that they design and manufacture loudspeakers, amplifiers, and pre-amplifiers. Though that may seem like a tremendous undertaking, this isn’t Steven’s first go-round in the electronics industry, he was a founding partner of EDGE Electronics. Steven’s design philosophies toward designing and listening are many.Read the full article

By | April 22nd, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Audiophiles can’t always agree on what tastes delicious. Maybe you like tubes, solid state, digital, or pure analog… 31 flavours can’t do it justice, but there is something for everyone.

Chicago based Quintessence Audio and Michigan based Paragon Sight and Sound worked together to put on an a test drive of four different Wilson Audio Speakers in very different setups. From entry to extreme, analog to digital, there was something that tasted delicious for everyone. WE LOVED this idea and hope to see it again at future shows.… Read the full article

RMAF 2107: Nagra, Wilson define the state of the art

By | November 6th, 2017|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

I found myself getting short of breath at RMAF not long after I entered room 1030 at the Marriott Denver Tech Center. I put most of the blame on my general middle-aged poor health, combined with the altitude. But I also might have been hyperventilating from hearing $200K worth of impeccable electronics playing some classic blues records on the new Wilson Audio Alexia 2s.

I’d only sunk into a chair for a short time when my oxygen-starved brain began to process the sounds coming out of the new Alexias ($57,900 USD).… Read the full article

AXPONA 2017: Not much scares YG Acoustics, Mola-Mola, Kubala-Sosna

By | May 9th, 2017|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , |

For an audio manufacturer that has worked long and hard to craft equipment that sounds great under most normal listening conditions, taking that gear to an audio show can be as frightening as entering a spook house on Halloween.

In a thunderstorn. With a black cat streaking across the sidewalk. Just as your flashlight fails.

What’s so scary is there’s nothing normal about the space or the conditions where you’re about to install your latest, carefully tweaked stereo creations. You’re either in a cramped hotel suite with a large amount of glass at one end, or you’ve shelled out for a cavernous conference room.… Read the full article

AXPONA 2017: Kii Audio Is Under Your Thumb

By | April 29th, 2017|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , |

He may not realize it but Bruno Putzeys had a VERY good show.  I say this because I don’t believe Bruno was at AXPONA.  But he had two intriguing systems at the show.  One was a YG Acoustics system with Carmel 2 speakers and Bruno Putzeys Mola Mola gear.  Don’t you just love that name?  Of course, the highlight of that room may have been Joe Kubala’s new Kubala-Sosna Realization cable.  Liquid, detailed sound kept me there for a few songs before moving on to the Kii Audio room.… Read the full article

Audio Ramblings – The Focal ELEAR Headphones and Cabling From Moon Audio, Double Helix, Wireworld, and a Whole Lot More…

So I’ve been playing around more with headphones (headphones from Sennheiser, Audeze, AKG, and OPPO are in my usual rotation of references), but after hearing the new ELEARs from Focal… uh, we got to have these. At an event held over in Torrance at The Source A/V a while ago, Carol and I, along with a throng of local head-phiers got to hear the complete line of Focal headphones from the $3995 Utopias to the $995 ELEARs to the $249 Listens with just about any head amp out there.… all stellar, but all rather obviously different.… Read the full article

Bill Parish of GTT Audio

A couple of months ago I got an invitation from Dick Diamond of YG Acoustics, Bill Parish of GTT Audio, and Joe Kubala of Kubala-Sosna to attend a special event at GTT Audio’s HQ in Newark. It turns out that Yoav Geva…the “YG” of the company name…has been working on a statement loudspeaker, behind our collective backsides.… Read the full article
