Letters to the editor: The KIA, Nova Fidelity, Denon

By | July 13th, 2019|Categories: DAR|Tags: , , , , , |

We give and you take. That’s the deal of publishing. What the following respondents have in common is that they generously return the favour by offering up their own insight. It’s why their missives are run here (and not solicitations for buying advice). Got a question about what we do at Darko-Audio? Kindly check out our new FAQ before firing off an email.

I just wanted to share a few thoughts with you. Having been in the A/V biz for over 40 years (Gad.) I find your reviews to be by far the best currently out there.… Read the full article

Letters to the editor: Squeezebox, Dutch & Dutch & more

By | June 7th, 2019|Categories: DAR|Tags: , , , , , , |

What follows is a selection of reader emails from the past few weeks that choose to pay it forward. Thank you to all readers who share their own intel and insights with me (and you).

Hi Darko,

What a surprise to see an article about SB & LMS all these years after the official end :-D.

Disclosure: I’m the Logitech employee left to take care of all things Squeezebox. And I’m probably the most active contributor to LMS.… Read the full article

Letters to the editor: AXPONA 2019, CDs & electronic music

Mark M. writes in about AXPONA 2019…

Hey John and company,

I read your AXPONA post before attending and you were spot on, not great for critical listening but fantastic for seeing and hearing new equipment normally only seen on screen. This was my first audio show and all I can say is what a great group of people. (Exhibitors, attendees, and staff) The discussion between Steve Guttenberg and Andrew Jones was a good listen and I had a great chat with Scott Mcgowan from PS Audio.… Read the full article

Letters to the editor: Soekris, FiiO, Parks Audio, Gustard

Once again, thank you to everyone who writes in to offer up their own experiences and insights.

Hi

I enjoyed your article, much needed in audio circles in my opinion, about active loudspeakers, which I have consistently found to outperform passive designs. I was surprised, however, that you forgot to mention THE grandaddy and possibly still the leading exponent of active/DSP speaker design, the people who practically invented them at least for domestic use – Meridian.

If you haven’t heard a pair of Meridian DSPs, you owe it to yourself, particularly the SE speakers since you like MQA and they are probably still the only speakers designed from the ground up to take full advantage of the format.… Read the full article

I do like to purchase 16-bit ‘CD quality’ FLAC downloads once in a while for my personal library. For now, I was pleasantly surprised to see the US Qobuz site has lower prices for 16-bit FLAC albums than the Tidal store. Price is king!

Dear John,

I am writing to you because of this very important issue and topic and I feel inclined to correct someone on the internet if they are wrong.… Read the full article

Hello John. Thanks for all this informative entertaining stuff. I didn’t know you could stream CD quality via Sonos until I watched your recent video. Qobuz now added to Spotify  – streaming via a Sonos Connect in the living room (via Marantz and KEF) and Chromecast Audio in office headphone system (via Schitt Modi, Magni and AKG). Second Chromecast bought to form part of a cheapo bedroom system (yet to buy).… Read the full article

A new year brings a fresh batch of ‘givers’ to the yard. A robust ‘thank you’ goes out to all who choose to share their findings with us.

Just wanted to say thank you for your approach to reviewing, as you’ve become my first in line, go-to guy when I inevitably begin my daily music & audio obsession.

Also wanted to thank you for your coverage on Raspberry Pi/DigiOne/Allo etc. as it pushed me to finally get a USBridge to replace my laptop as my streaming source via Roon.… Read the full article

Letters to the editor: Videos vs. words

By | November 21st, 2018|Categories: DAR|Tags: , , , , , , , |

It seems our Chord Qutest, ALLO DigiOne Signature and KEF LSX video reviews really pushed back the email floodgates. What follows is a selection of missives from Darko.Audio readers around the world arriving in the past few weeks.

Dominik H:

Hi John,

Thank you for your review of Qutest. Actually, I have learned about Chord products thanks to your previous reviews and went along the way using Mojo and then Hugo2 for my setup during the last 12 months.

A year ago I was all into hi-end headphones and portable DAC/amps, but then I realized I prefer convenience over absolute sound quality and ended up owning and using B&W PX’s over Audeze’s and Apple AirPods over Westone UM Pro’s.… Read the full article

Letters to the editor: Paying it forward

By | September 12th, 2018|Categories: DAR|Tags: , , , , , |

Nicolas P. writes:

I write in relation to the observations of some of your readers on the pros and cons of WiFi versus wired. Because of the layout of my house and the headache that would be caused setting up a wired network I have no choice but to use WiFi.

I use an Allo USBridge which feeds a Chord Mojo on my main system. The USBridge really allows the Mojo to shine. Because the Allo Sparky has no inbuilt WiFi, I have had to resort to using a dongle.… Read the full article

Letters to the editor: assume = ass + u + me

By | August 8th, 2018|Categories: DAR|Tags: , , , |

What’s the number one misunderstanding about your job? For the hi-fi reviewer, it might be that s/he has heard every single piece audio hardware coming to market; that s/he finds sufficient time to review each one; that any brand/product omissions must be down to reviewer prejudice or a behind the scenes beef.

As the cliché goes, to assume is to make an ass out of you and me.

Dear Mr Darko,

I’m currently reviewing some DACs to upgrade my HiFi system, and I have avidly read and mulled over a number of your reviews (still am….), which are always both infinitely apropos in structure and content and entertaining as well.Read the full article
