LAAS-CANCELLED

LAAS-CANCELLED

The 2018 Los Angeles Audio Show has been cancelled, and refunds will be issued immediately according to a personal, and emotional statement released late Wednesday night by the show’s organizer Marine de Rogez-Presson. What this means exactly for the fate of the show in 2019 still seems to be determined, but it looks as if there may be only one LA-area show – The Home Entertainment Show, June 1-3, 2018 at the Marriott Irvine Spectrum Hotel – for the foreseeable future.… Read the full article

Audio shows can be a strange experience. No, I’m not talking about catching a frightening glimpse of yours truly, shakily down on all fours, getting a close-up photo of an XLR jack. I’m referring to sound.

laas9For reasons that still are a mystery to me, at some events you practically are overwhelmed by the number of glorious systems. At others, you can go a whole day (or more) without getting your socks knocked off. I’ve wondered: Are the shows that seem to have very few awesome rigs the ones that suffer most from hotel bugaboos, such as challenging acoustics and sketchy power?… Read the full article

Doug White of The Voice That Is.

You can say two things for certain about high-end audio dealer Doug White: He has terrific ears and is very discerning.

White runs The Voice That Is, a Philadelphia-based shop. He is a fixture at most of the big shows, and is one of those exhibitors you can count on to consistently be making a good sound. In White’s case, it’s usually a great sound.

I visited the Voice room on Saturday at the Los Angeles Audio Show and auditioned White’s system, which featured Tidal Audio speakers and electronics.… Read the full article

LA Audio Show 2017: Wyred 4 Sound, KEF offer attainable sonic bliss

In the retail trade, products by Michael Kors and Kate Spade are considered “affordable luxury.” They offer a taste of opulence, but with prices significantly below Chanel or Neiman Marcus.

High-end audio has its more accessible brands as well. One that has been on the rise in recent years is Atascadero, Calif.-based Wyred 4 Sound.

laas9Wyred has been introducing well-built, attractively priced gear at a blistering pace. At last fall’s Rocky Mountain Audio Fest, for example, it displayed three new components – a pair of sleek mono blocks, a power supply and a streamer (then a prototype).… Read the full article

LA Audio Show 2017: Raidho D1.1 speakers create big sound from small box

I get the impression that Raidho Acoustics is one of those high-end companies that does things in what it believes is the “right” way, no matter the cost.

laas9Raidho essentially confirms this on its website. “At Raidho, we are committed to develop and produce the best loudspeakers ever built,” reads the introductory paragraph. To pursue this lofty goal, Raidho uses extremely high-quality parts and materials – many developed within the company itself – and assembles its speakers by hand in its own factory in Denmark.… Read the full article

LA Audio Show 2017: ATC brings pro sound into your home

FullSizeRender-485-1

I’ve long heard good reports about ATC speakers and electronics, but never seemed to be in the right place for a substantial demo.

I finally corrected that situation at the Los Angeles Audio Show, where Lone Mountain Audio was showing ATC’s SCM 50 passive tower loudspeakers ($20,999 USD), P2 amplifier ($4,599 USD) and CA2 Mk. 2 preamp ($2,999 USD).

ATC, based in the UK, is an interesting company. Its history goes back to 1974 when engineer and working musician Billy Woodman created a business to manufacture custom drive units for the professional sound industry.… Read the full article

LAAS 2017: Rethm, Audio Hungary, Aqua create pleasing sound at attractive price

Looking at price tags at audio shows quickly can start your head spinning. Yes, this hobby is called the high-end, but really?

That’s why I always enjoy finding rooms where the rig sounds great, but might not require a second mortgage. One of those systems at the Los Angeles Audio Show was put together by Springfield, Virginia-based distributor Well Pleased Audio Vida.

It indeed was pleasing to add up all the equipment and get a total of around $20,000 USD.… Read the full article

LA Audio Show 2017: Nola Gold 2s play music like ringing a bell

Nola speakers don’t look like anything else. In my experience, hearing hundreds of different transducers at shows each year, they don’t sound like anything else, either.

Visually, putting Nolas in your room is something like installing a pair of wooden, scale-model bell towers. With these speakers, the upper portion of the cabinets is open on three sides — left, right and back.

In fact, if you were playing AC/DC’s “Hells Bells” on Nolas, you might be forgiven for getting up to check for ringers hanging in those towers.… Read the full article

LA Audio Show 2017 Video: The High End Zone, Perfect8 Technologies, Ypsilon Electronics

Through the Looking Glass.

laas9This is the Lewis Carroll sequel to the much more famous Alice in Wonderland. In it Alice again acquires entry to a magical world, this time by climbing through a mirror. The title instantly sprang to mind after spending a few minutes in the High End Zone room at the Los Angeles Audio Show looking through a pair of the transparent-glass cabinet Perfect8 Technologies Point Mk III loudspeakers being driven by Ypsilon Electronics amplification, and being fed the ones and zeros from an Aurender W20 music server.… Read the full article

LA Audio Show 2017: Volti’s ‘compact’ Rival speaks with big voice

The Volti Rival.

laas6

I had to chuckle a little to myself when Volti Audio rolled out what it described as its “compact” loudspeaker at the Los Angeles Audio Show.

Calling the new model small, however is kind of like describing a Mercedes-Benz C-Class sedan as “entry level.” Even with that car, you’re still getting plenty of luxury.

It’s much the same with the Rival ($7,900 to $11,900 USD/pair, depending on options). It’s still a Volti, and you’re still looking at a lot of speaker.… Read the full article
