CAF 2018: Spatial Audio, Linear Tube Audio, ANTICABLE and a Lesson in Value

By | November 22nd, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , , |

At last month’s Rocky Mountain Audio Fest, I asked a couple of audio buddies if they’d seen (well, heard) anything interesting at the show. Both of them immediately mentioned the fantastic open-baffle speakers from Spatial Audio, and how they sounded incredible for just four grand per pair. Hmmm, I thought, I’ll have to check them out. But I didn’t—and I was looking everywhere for them. It was the last day of the show, however, and I was tired and my eyes might have been on the blurry side.… Read the full article

“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” — Helen Keller

Spatial Audio, Linear Tube Audio, and Fern & Roby each arrive at a new reference this weekend at Axpona, and I’m glad I was able to hear it.

Cone drivers bolted into wooden boxes are a dime a dozen. On the tip of my tongue I’m lucky if questioned to name more than a handful of open-baffle speaker companies that are more than a garage business.Read the full article

AXPONA 2018: The Expo Hall (Part One)

Bigger and better
than ever, this years Expo Hall at AXPONA was alone worth the cost of admission. Vendors were pulling all the stops with their displays and demo exhibits. Traffic was consistent throughout the weekend, and I imagine the Expo Hall will be a popular destination for both attendee and exhibitor next year.
On with the show!

Review: Linear Tube Audio ZOTL 10 Mk.II Amplifier

By | May 20th, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , |

Concurrent with my receipt of the amplifier up for review here, Linear Tube Audio’s (LTA) ZOTL 10 Mk.II, came another welcome piece of news: the well-regarded German jazz/classical label ECM had decided to release its entire catalog for streaming via Tidal and other services. Most audiophile types are well aware of this label, especially for its collection of albums by interesting European and American jazz artists, all rendered in superbly recorded sound. It’s one of my favorite jazz labels, going back to my time as a teenager when my brothers and I would collect all of the early Pat Metheny ECM vinyl we could find.… Read the full article

Capital Audiofest 2017: Kickin’ it with Linear Tube Audio

By | November 23rd, 2017|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , |

Local Washington DC company Linear Tube Audio (LTA) had a big presence at the show this year. It seemed like every time I turned around, something of theirs was staring me down. Most notable was their dedicated room, in which a bevy of LTA amplification, together with the nifty Wolf Audio server and Mytek Manhattan 2 DAC, drove the super efficient Tekton Design Double Impact speakers to great heights.

Also on hand just outside of CanJam was LTA’s Will Schneider holding court over an array of MZ2 (that’s short for MicroZOTL2) headphone amp/preamp units set up and ready to drive a nice collection of ‘phones.… Read the full article

RMAF 2017: Fern & Roby, Linear Tube Audio, and Black Cat Cable

Montrose turntables by Fern & Roby.

Some rooms at hifi-audio shows are infused with synergy. Every component in the set-up works flawlessly with every other component in the signal path. Some call this a curated system – one that is built from time, research, and experience with many manufacturers. Knowing what amplifier works perfectly with what speaker, which tonearm with which turntable, understanding the properties of tubes or cables, and being able to choose those that can add a touch of warmth, timbral accuracy or transparency borders on the religious in its orthodoxy.… Read the full article
