Lyn Stanley The Moonlight Sessions

Lyn Stanley’s The Moonlight Sessions, Vol. 2 (A.T. Music LLC 3106, 2-LP set $125, CD/SACD $29.98, http://www.lynstanley.com)

“Other than that, I think her voice is incredibly sexy and inviting. It’s much closer to London than too-cool-for-school Krall and for that reason I’ll be more than happy to bring this to all future trade shows. Unless, of course, I get a hold of one of those LPs.”

Last August I reviewed Lyn Stanley’s first volume of The Moonlight Sessions for my blog.… Read the full article

Lars Jakob Rudjord Indiepiano

Fyrlyd Records FYRLYDLP1602, available at http://fyrlyd.no/ for 389 NOK

“I’m a huge fan of those guys.”

Music reviewers aren’t supposed to admit to such things. We’re supposed to be objective in our approach to something that’s almost perfectly subjective. We’re supposed to accurately describe the release, offer some sort of reference for the reader that makes sense (“It’s like Pet Sounds performed by My Life in the Thrill Kill Kult.”) and deliver just enough words to sound either vaguely approving or cautiously disapproving.… Read the full article

3Divas

DIVA 3DCD-2017, CD $17.99, available at http://divajazz.com/sights-and-sounds/recordings/3divas_cd/

Should it matter that the music you’re listening to is performed entirely by women?

That’s the problem I had right out of the gate when it came to reviewing this eponymous debut CD from three supremely talented jazz musicians—pianist Jackie Warren, bassist Amy Shook, and drummer Sherrie Maricle. Initially, without any prompting from the liner notes, I thought this new CD sounded flat-out wonderful. While these three women have only been playing together since 2014, when they sat in with the DIVA Jazz Orchestra for the Cleveland Playhouse’s production of Maurice Hines’ Tappin’ Thru Life, they’re a solid trio that creates a sophisticated and fleshed-out sound.… Read the full article

Sasha Matson Tight Lines

Like many boomers, I’ve reached the point in my life where the aesthetics of Mid-Century Americana have become incredibly pleasing. It might be nostalgia, borne from the idea that the world of my childhood looked very different than now but in delightfully subtle ways such as the lines of the furniture in the average living room, the simplicity of architecture during the post-war suburban expansion and the way literature sought to be at the vanguard and going after the rapidly disintegrating status quo.… Read the full article

Thurston Moore, Rock and Roll Consciousness

Thurston Moore

Ecstatic Peace!/Caroline Records CAROL015LP, $19.99 2-LPs Amazon.com

For me there are two Sonic Youths. I really like one of them. They’re edgy and noisy but still know how to create simple and concise indie-pop songs that really kick ass, songs like “Kool Thing” and “Bull in the Heather.” They can even branch out and deliver an epic and ambitious tune such as “Dirty Boots” and most of Daydream Nation, just to let you know there’s something else going on with this band, something deep.Read the full article

Doug Munro and La Pompe Attack The Harry Warren Songbook

Munro La Pompe Attack Harry Warren Songbook

Doug Munro and La Pompe Attack, The Harry Warren Songbook

(GotMusic Records, GMR-1004, available at http://www.dougmunro.com, $15.99 CD)

My first trip to an honest-to-goodness high-end audio store, one where I planned on making an actual purchase, happened way back in 1989 in downtown Philadelphia. (I lived there for almost a year, which now seems strange.) I sold off a decent chunk of my record collection, mostly the stuff I had collected as a teenager and felt I’d outgrown, so that I could upgrade the stock AR arm and an old Grado cartridge on my AR ES-1 turntable.… Read the full article

Tinariwen’s Elwan on LP

Tinariwen

Tinariwen, Elwan

(ANTI- 87467-1, 2-LP set $19.98 through Amazon)

Reviewing contemporary music is often merely a matter of describing a hybrid. “Their music is a cross between Gwar and the first three Partridge Family LPs.” “This latest album blends grindcore and dubstep with Texas swing.” You can communicate the essence of a performer by mentioning two or more decidedly different types of music and probably manage to get the idea across to your reader through mere words.

Well, try this hybrid out for size: Mississippi Delta blues and Tuareg folk music from Mali.… Read the full article

Arthur Lipner’s Two Hands, One Heart on CD

Back in the ’80s, when I was in college, I tried very hard to get into jazz. Many of my music-loving friends had already discovered it, and they constantly told me that if I found the right entry point I would totally dig it. I tried and I tried but I just couldn’t find the same emotional connection that had already found through rock and, more recently at the time, classical. To me, jazz remained aloof, cerebral and perhaps a tad chaotic for a Southern California boy raised on The Beatles, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin.… Read the full article

Are you musically adventurous?

That question might seem dated in a spacy, Jimi Hendrix’ first album sort of way, but it’s an honest question for most music lovers. We all have strange and unique recordings in our collections and sometimes, when the right people are hanging out in our listening rooms, we might ask them if they’d like to hear something really, really weird.… Read the full article
