McIntosh MTI100

Of all the products McIntosh has put out in the past few years this has really caught my attention. The classic McIntosh look embroidered onto a turntable, but wait, are those tubes? Perhaps giving a new definition to the term all-in-one for audiophiles, the newly announced MTI100 actually combines a 80 watt/channel (8 ohms) integrated amplifier with a vinyl turntable… and quite a bit more.

Something old, something new.

At first glance some might take pause at the vibration-sensitive source pushed so close to any other component, but it appears as though McIntosh has really thought the execution though.… Read the full article

Future-Fi turntablism: the McIntosh MTI100

By | January 24th, 2019|Categories: DAR|Tags: , , , |

So – you’re into vinyl and you want a new hi-fi system? And you’ve already sourced a pair of reasonably efficient loudspeakers?

Let’s get to it.

You’ll need the following equipment: 1) a turntable (obviously); 2) a phono pre-amp to bring the turntable’s signal up to line-level; 3) a pre-amplifier for source selection and volume control (may I suggest tubes?) and; 4) a power amplifier to drive the loudspeakers.

Maybe you might also consider a 5) separate headphone amplifier for late night listening and a 6) D/A converter for your TV, (vintage) CD player that comes equipped with Bluetooth for when your friends drop by?… Read the full article

RMAF 2018: A Critical Eye

I have completely bought into the music reproduction industry ever since I heard the difference between lamp cord as speaker wire and Monster brand wire oh so many years ago. Yes, I built Heathkit and Eico kits when I was a teenager in the middle 60’s, but really had no idea what was really going on.

During this time I was developing my ear for music. Big band and classical when I was alone, and rock when friends came over, as well as getting an inkling of how the music sounded different through different types of components and wire.… Read the full article

RMAF 2018: McIntosh Labs, Sonus Faber and a Gorgeous Sea of Binghamton Blue

By | October 28th, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , |

Can I talk about McIntosh Labs without mentioning the beautiful blue meters? Can anyone? Should I even bother?

As I wandered down the corridors at the 2018 Rocky Mountain Audio Fest, those ubiquitous blue meters beckoned me to enter the two Mac rooms and bask in that legendary glow. I can’t resist this timeless gear, mostly because I’ve always had a secret lust in my heart for Mac ever since I first set the loading for my cartridge on a borrowed McIntosh MC2300 preamp via the remote control.… Read the full article

McIntosh MC312

A new great-big amplifier is coming your way from downstate New York. The new McIntosh MC302 is a moderately priced solid-state stereo amplifier with improved performance and some tweaked aesthetics. Need power? 300 watts is a lot of mojo.

But I still feel like a moth drawn to the flame of those blue meters. Hmmm. ZAP.

Authorized retailers should be able to order them now; customer availability is targeted at “October”, which is now, so I’m guessing “real soon”.

MSRP is $7,000.… Read the full article
