Sound Insight made the subs, GT Audio Works made the speakers, Pass Labs made gobs of power, Semper Sonus provides the mechanical wizardry, Esoteric and Vu Jade Audio kept things nice and dark, while Triode Wire Labs and ATS Acoustics kept everything in check.

Sound Insight is a New York state dealer with two showrooms in Long Island; one in Massapequa, and the other in Huntington. Here at Capital Audiofest, stood one of the companies greatest contributions to hi-fi.

PTARmaf2018

With only a few hours left on Sunday, the final day of the last Rocky Mountain Audio Fest to be held at the Denver Marriott Tech Center, I become sentimental. I decide to take a moment for myself. I go for a quick stroll through the remainder of the show, I collect a few extra photos, and maybe even take in a song or two.

Here, a photo tour of my last hours at the show.

Bob Sattin’s step-up transformers for Moving Coil cartridges are well known, and their sound: legendary.… Read the full article

IMC Audio, Pass Labs and Audience – CAF 2018

IMC Audio

I often harass showgoers for their opinions. It was Saturday afternoon, nearing the close of the show and I petitioned two elderly gentlemen to offer up some of their favourite rooms from the show. Outwardly one of the two men proclaimed he had only one, the IMC Audio room. I offered a few of my own, hoping he hadn’t been to them yet. He told me, “I’ve been to those rooms, and they just don’t hold up to the IMC room.” Intrigued and a little ego-hurt, I listened further as he told me why the rooms I liked were garbage, and why the IMC room was better at holding the torch for all of the audiophile virtues we seek.Read the full article

There are over 1,000,000 brands exhibiting here at Capital Audiofest … okay, okay, — I don’t know how many brands exactly, but it does seem like a lot this year. Which makes 2018’s event feel every bit like the “premier show of North America’s eastern coast”, that we often claim it to be. Fear not, as the rag-tag band of misfits from Part-Time Audiophile are here to be your surrogate audio show guide.

Here are some surefire rooms to get you started off on the right foot.Read the full article

RMAF 2018: Zu Audio, Pass Labs, MoFi; Another Late Night of Late Night Tales

Listening to a slew of high-efficiency Zu Audio speakers is nothing new to me, and doing so with Pass Labs amplification is also old-hat. Spending late nights at audio shows in the Zu Audio room is also nothing new, however every night creates a different experience. If you haven’t heard, or I haven’t been clear enough, Zu Audio is known for bringing the party atmosphere both on and off the audio show scheduled hours.

A pair of Pass Labs’ newest and most affordable, XA Series class-A stereo power amplifiers, the XA-25 ($4,900 USD) were powering two separate Zu Audio systems at Rocky Mountain Audio Fest; the Druid Mk VI ($10,000 USD) and the Omen Dirty Weekend ($1,000 USD) model loudspeakers.… Read the full article

Ryan Speakers and Pass Labs – RMAF 2018

By | October 16th, 2018|Categories: Audiohead|Tags: , , , , , , , , |

While Ryan Speakers certainly has a flushed out line of floor standers to standmounts, its the new S610 that has really caught our eye as of late. Their room at RMAF this year was a relatively simple one, lined up next to elaborate vinyl incarnations and room-filling giant horn speakers. But it was simplicity with a cold shot of hifi accuracy, dynamics and well… value, all things considered.

The entire system wasn’t what most consider fully budget value, as each component easily sailed victoriously north of $2k per, but rather an interesting mix of slightly more attainable high end.… Read the full article

Bakoon AMP-41 Review | An Open Window

By | September 30th, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , |

Bakoon Amp-41 header

The Bakoon Amp-41 integrated amplifier was a mystery to me. As in “no preconceived notions” whatsoever.  Sometimes, we get to evaluate gear that has been reviewed to death by the major players, talked about incessantly in the back corridors of the audio chatrooms, and the like.  It’s fun, but like it or not, I feel like I know more than I want to about the product before I ever get to hear it for myself.  My initial thought when Scot Hull handed me this amp was something like “Bakoon? … Read the full article

Review: First Watt SIT-3 Amplifier

By | July 15th, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , |

To those who follow aviation history, Clarence “Kelly” Johnson is something of a legend. In case you are unfamiliar with the name, Johnson was a chief designer for Lockheed Martin who was the brains behind such legendary aircraft as the U2 and SR-71 Blackbird reconnaissance aircraft. These designs were so top secret that they were conceived and developed in a nebulous location known as the “Skunk Works” and eventually tested at Groom Lake in the Nevada desert, which is known more universally as Area 51.… Read the full article
