Vitus Audio RS101 and RL102 | Review

By | July 7th, 2019|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , |

Looking at the Vitus Audio RS101 amplifier, or the matching Vitus Audio RL102 linestage (updates to the line that included the RS100 and RD100, which we reviewed a few years ago), it’s hard to dispute that Hans Ole Vitus is a no-compromise kind of guy. According to his brief online biography, the Danish-born designer cut his teeth early on high-end audio, having taken apart, re-built and modified his share of components as a youngster. This interest led to a degree in electronic engineering, followed by a technical career with Texas Instruments.… Read the full article

Sonus Faber Serafino Tradition | Review

By | June 30th, 2019|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , |

With the Sonus Faber Serafino Tradition in your room, chances are high you will tend to let irrelevancies slide. Like food, water, and personal hygiene. Because you will have more important things to attend to. Like how unbelievably pretty these speakers are. That really is the first and last word — these loudspeakers are the best-looking that I have ever had the pleasure of seeing in my home. They’re embarrassingly well-made. Every aspect is attended to, and the whole is so over-the-top lux that they made the rest of my home look shabby.… Read the full article

Gold Note Mediterraneo Turntable | Review

By | June 23rd, 2019|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , |

Wow! What is it about Italian audio gear? I have been recently blessed with a veritable feast for both the eyes and the ears …. Right at the tail-end of my time with the lovely Sonus Faber Sonetto II speakers, this lovely morsel shows up: the Gold Note Mediterraneo turntable (website) fitted out with the company’s B7 ceramic tonearm. Just like Sonus Faber speakers, this ‘table reeks of classic European style and panache; it’s a visual work of art and thing of beauty.… Read the full article

AXPONA 2019 Pass Luminous

AXPONA 2019 Show Coverage brought to you by Core Power Technologies

CHICAGO (PTA) — What would a show be, without Pass Labs, and me waxing on-and-on about open-baffle speakers? Overall, three very familiar brands, offer up something entirely new when working together. The new PureAudioProject loudspeaker, ready-to-run right out of the box, no assembly required and based on their Trio 15 design. Still one of the best values in hi-end, the new loudspeaker just made getting into the PureAudioProject universe of sound that much easier.… Read the full article

Auralic, Pass Labs, YG Acoustics, Ryan Speakers – AXPONA 2019

Auralic, YG Acoustics, Ryan Speakers - AXPONA 2019

Auralic takes over one of the larger rooms at AXPONA 2019 with a formidable pair of high-end stereo systems in each corner. Each delivers the punches at every note, rumble, and snap of the musical demonstration. Taking advantage of the large venue space, I was able to experience two towering systems with Auralic being the constant star of the main event.

Most interesting to me — and beautifully shown — were the museum quality installations of Auralic’s discrete inner-components on display.… Read the full article

Amphion Argon 3S

Better living through chemistry

As a practicing chemist (or rather, “purveyor of chemical knowledge”), I’m quite keen on all things chemistry. My interest was piqued, therefore, several years ago when I first noticed the offerings of the Finnish company Amphion. As far as I could tell, the operation crafted speakers for both the pro audio and high-end consumer communities, and more importantly, they named their home audio products after chemical elements!

Yes, lots of companies do this sort of thing. Haven’t we all seen the “silver, gold, or platinum” edition of this product or that?… Read the full article

Sound Insight made the subs, GT Audio Works made the speakers, Pass Labs made gobs of power, Semper Sonus provides the mechanical wizardry, Esoteric and Vu Jade Audio kept things nice and dark, while Triode Wire Labs and ATS Acoustics kept everything in check.

PTARmaf2018

With only a few hours left on Sunday, the final day of the last Rocky Mountain Audio Fest to be held at the Denver Marriott Tech Center, I become sentimental. I decide to take a moment for myself. I go for a quick stroll through the remainder of the show, I collect a few extra photos, and maybe even take in a song or two.

Here, a photo tour of my last hours at the show.

Bob Sattin’s step-up transformers for Moving Coil cartridges are well known, and their sound: legendary.… Read the full article
