Darko.Audio podcast #10 – Accuracy

By | September 20th, 2018|Categories: DAR|Tags: , , , , |

As the sun went down on Berlin, it came up in Portland, just as Jeff Dorgay and I convened across Internet wires, Macs and microphones for another episode of the Darko.Audio podcast. Monday’s Euro sunset turned in a spectacular performance – enough for me to interrupt podcast recording midway to take four shots with a Canon EOS 200D camera. See above (but also below).

Question time: how accurate is my photo? How close is it to the actual event?

Framing a shot crops out reality’s width and height to render it instanstly compromised.… Read the full article

Darko.Audio podcast #9 – Music formats

Vinyl sales are on the up and up. Audiophiles already know that. But cassettes are coming back too. UK cassette sales were up 90% on the same period last year. Moreover, almost all new releases still get pressed to CD. And yet that DSD-loaded future we were promised back in 2010 is nowhere to be seen.

A new Aphex Twin EP will soon be issued as a limited vinyl, a standard vinyl, a CD and a cassette. And if it wasn’t for the 24-bit PCM download or the streaming, you’d swear it was 1991 all over again.… Read the full article

Darko.Audio podcast #8 – Music discovery

We like your old stuff better than your new stuff. A criticism levelled at most successful musicians over the years. And levelled also at Apple — whose journey into USB-C has seen their mag-safe power connector bite the dust and whose more recent low/er-travel keyboards aren’t as satisfying to the touch as those of yore, never mind their ability to trap dust to render keys stuck or unresponsive. It is for these reasons that for the first time in a decade I’m moving back to Windows with a Surface Book 2.… Read the full article

Darko.Audio podcast #7 – Streaming methods

By | June 15th, 2018|Categories: DAR|Tags: , , |

Naim’s Uniti Atom could be the poster child of the modern hi-fi age: a small 40wpc integrated amplifier with probably the best volume control in the world that streams every which way: aptX Bluetooth, Apple AirPlay, Googlecast, UPnP and Roon; plus Internet radio and Tidal through Naim’s own app.

The Uniti Atom is the perfect platform from which to discuss how we stream music in the home and the perfect starting point for the seventh Darko.Audio podcast, the second with TONEAudio‘s Jeff Dorgay.… Read the full article

Darko.Audio podcast #6 – Munich High-End 2018

By | May 21st, 2018|Categories: DAR|Tags: , , , |

In which John Darko, Aphex Twin fan, sits down for breakfast in Munich with Jeff Dorgay, Kiss fan, to chat about the world’s greatest audio show. Dorgay is the gregarious editor/publisher of TONEAudio. Please excuse our eggs and coffee.

This episode comes with an audiophile safety warning: both Jeff and John have little time for the demo-room deployment of Diana Krall or The Eagles.

Darko.Audio Podcast #5 – Downloads

In episode #5 of the Darko.Audio, John and I discuss where to buy music. Music to own. Not the iTunes store and not lossy content but without overly emphasising hi-res content. The gateway to hi-res is Redbook, CD-quality.

Darko.Audio Podcast #4 – Uptown Top Ranking

The Darko.Audio podcast is primarily intended to provoke thought among listeners. But gently. Carefully. With consideration.

“I think listeners see right through presenters who try to jazz up their talk with hollow words such as amped, pumped and psyched. My genuine enthusiasm for – and criticism of – music and playback hardware comes from both a broad industry overview and quiet consideration of the specifics that I see and hear. I hope our podcast reflects my more sober take on what’s good”, says John Darko.… Read the full article

Darko.Audio Podcast #3 – In A Room

By | April 13th, 2018|Categories: DAR|Tags: , , , , , , , , |

In a week where we extensively introduced the Kii Three loudspeakers with three videos, it’s a nice piece of symmetry that the Darko.Audio podcast reaches its third episode.

For ‘#3 – In A Room’, we have loosened the editing screws to discuss a piece of gear that Darko would replace in a heartbeat, the room as a tone control and its implications for the reliability of show-based auditions, plus two very different experiences with powerline network adaptors.

We finish up with Darko raving about the new album from Jonathan Wilson (Rare Birds) and chat about older records from Peter Gabriel and Casiotone For The Painfully Alone.… Read the full article
