Audio shows are more than new gear releases and demonstrations to me. They are a chance to connect with the strange personalities that embody what it means to be an eccentric. Sometimes our interests can be socially unfortunate, but it’s during these few moments of the year at audio shows where we audiophiles can feel normal in our priorities, lusts, and musical tastes.
A world within the show, a Quintessence Audio LTD exhibit only requires a few steps physically (none socially) to transport you to a wonderland of high-end audio toys. For one weekend a year, the Chicago area showroom gathers up its roots and re-plants itself large at Axpona. Often taking up an entire floor of the show tower, this year Mick Survance and his crew set up shop at the proper nexus of the audio show traffic.

I’ve been a fan of Audio Research for a while. It started back around 1990 with a trip to Lyric Hifi in New York City where I was lucky enough to find the legendary Mike Kay. We got along very well and he was determined to show me what high end audio could do. We wound up listening to his Infinity IRS V setup but wound up in a more affordable room with Magnepan IIIa speakers and Audio Research gear. Chicago based Quintessence Audio and Michigan based Paragon Sight and Sound worked together to put on an a test drive of four different Wilson Audio Speakers in very different setups.
