A short film about the Denafrips Terminator

By | September 10th, 2018|Categories: DAR|Tags: , , , , , |

The Terminator is a curious name for a DAC. It’s as memorable as it is over-ambitious. Does it lay to waste every other DAC in the phone book? No — but its above average performance/value quotient is enough to give some of 2018’s heavier hitters some sleepless nights.

Made in China by the lesser-known Denafrips, the Terminator’s feature set and circuit design connotes a certain duality: a DAC that comprehensively nods to the past with an R-2R decoding methodology and (optional) NOS, but locks onto the present with 24bit/384kHz- / native DSD-capable USB, both I2S inputs ‘standards’ (a rarity), a pair of Femto clocks and FPGA-powered data marshalling.… Read the full article

Airist Audio’s R-2R DAC: $350 via Massdrop

By | June 6th, 2018|Categories: DAR|Tags: , , , , , |

A breath of fresh Airist — five young guns, whose education background runs from Harvard to Columbia to MIT, are back from the quiet success of their Heron 5 headphone amplifier with a new product: the Massdrop x Airist Audio R-2R DAC. Almost everything we need to know is in the product name to make the Airist DAC doubly unusual: an old-school design selling through a new-school distribution channel.

‘R-2R’ refers to how the DAC handles D/A conversion: a series of 24 resistors (per channel) with each resistor outputting twice the voltage of the previous resistor.… Read the full article
