Schiit Audio Teases An Amplifier Named Aegir – RMAF 2018

By | October 17th, 2018|Categories: Audiohead|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , |

Like other some other audio show appearances, Schiit Audio pulled up residence in both the headphone area and in a two channel room at RMAF this year. The company recently broke party lines and returned to their roots with the release of a full-fledged loudspeaker pres and a mono/stereo power amp separates. Still hot off the R & D bench, the Vidar amps ($699) push 400 watts of Class AB in mono mode, and make a great pairing with the Schiit’s balanced tube pre Freya, also priced at $699.… Read the full article

Ryan Speakers and Pass Labs – RMAF 2018

By | October 16th, 2018|Categories: Audiohead|Tags: , , , , , , , , |

While Ryan Speakers certainly has a flushed out line of floor standers to standmounts, its the new S610 that has really caught our eye as of late. Their room at RMAF this year was a relatively simple one, lined up next to elaborate vinyl incarnations and room-filling giant horn speakers. But it was simplicity with a cold shot of hifi accuracy, dynamics and well… value, all things considered.

The entire system wasn’t what most consider fully budget value, as each component easily sailed victoriously north of $2k per, but rather an interesting mix of slightly more attainable high end.… Read the full article

The Voice That Is!, VIMBERG, TIDAL Audio and Antipodes – RMAF 2018

by Eric Shook

First-things-first at Rocky Mountain Audio Fest 2018, find Doug White of The Voice That Is! This is one of my personal rituals of the audio show circus, and it always pays off. Doug consistently sets the bar for best-in-show sound, so visiting his rooms first leaves me with an audible experience I can call upon when touring and summing other rooms. During my visit with Mr. White, I had the pleasure of taking the first ever press photos of the new VIMBERG speaker line, from VIMBERG founder and designer Jörn Janczak.Read the full article

Wyred 4 Sound – RMAF 2018

By | October 15th, 2018|Categories: Audiohead|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , |

EJ Sarmento had a trick up his sleeve for the Rocky Mountain Audiofest this year. Known primarily for his highly lauded work with DACs, streamers and amplification this year’s elaborate package of new audiophile releases included a pair of loudspeakers called Tempus ($9k). The new transducers is the first official category release for the west coast company, and at the show definitely lived up to the reputation that EJ has already established as a value-driven hifi establishment.

On top of the new Tempest, we found four other new products at the show starting with the Aura Pre ($3k) into dual Aura 1200M monos ($2k each).… Read the full article

JWM Acoustics & Aries Cerat – RMAF 2018

by Eric Shook

It’s been a full year since I first laid ears on the JWM Acoustics ALYSON AML II large monitors and Aries Cerat electronics. This years updated ALYSON AML Signature model features newly designed inner-baffles, updated crossovers that are more in line with their most refined experiments and studio implementations. What this all amounts to is that I still have a sense memory of my first listen, and from there, what I thought couldn’t really get any better — has just done that.Read the full article

Auralic – RMAF 2018

By | October 12th, 2018|Categories: Audiohead|Tags: , , , , , , , , |

There is always something interesting brewing with Auralic at audio shows, this year at RMAF was no different. The digital component and amplifier company partnered with YG Acoustics which is fast becoming something to look forward to as we make our way across the show circuit.

We really got a sense of the big show ponies from YG at T.H.E. Show on the west coast this year in the form of the Sonja XV Jr. but the Hailey 1.2 loudspeakers ($42,800/pair) on display in the Auralic room also fit the bill nicely.… Read the full article

PranaFidelity – RMAF 2018

by Eric Shook

Steven Norber is the founder, designer, and “Mr. Everything” of PranaFidelity. PranaFidelity manufacturers speakers, electronics, and excellent sound. This however isn’t Steven’s first rodeo in the electronics industry, he co-founded EDGE Electronics and lead it to great success.

Prana’s Bhava stand-mount have made quite a splash in the industry since my first hearing them at Axpona in the spring. The Bhava is a true competitor for full-range sound in a much smaller package. A true two-way MTM array, with dual six-inch woofers and a single 1¼-inch tweeter.Read the full article

Bryston – RMAF 2018

By | October 11th, 2018|Categories: Audiohead|Tags: , , , , , , |

By Eric Shook

Bryston is a Canadian company with a proven history of offering products that famously stand the test of time. The team from Bryston assembled one of their newest six-channel, actively-driven, and DSP-controlled stereo speaker systems. That may sound confusing at first, but to relax and listen to this all-Bryston offering is to live in a field of sound that is comfortably measured and precise.

Active speakers are not what they used to be, and honestly this is a good thing.… Read the full article

Campfire Audio Goes Custom With the Equinox IEM – RMAF 2018

By | October 11th, 2018|Categories: Audiohead|Tags: , , , , , , , , |

Campfire Audio Founder Ken Ball is a multi-talented guy. According to this podcast interview he started ALO audio as a wire company, but now has evolved his audio empire to portable amps, universal IEMs, closed-back circumaural and now custom IEMs. Yes, Ken is getting into the custom biz.

But his approach is anything but typical. Thwarting the Knowles BA driver regime, his first stab at the market will be a dynamic…a single dynamic driver, not even a hybrid. Its unconventional in this space, but banks on a carbon-coated transducer that has already proven its up to par in his Atlas universal.… Read the full article

MrSpeakers ETHER 2 – RMAF 2018

By | October 11th, 2018|Categories: Audiohead|Tags: , , , , , |

Light as a feather, stiff as a board. We used to play a silly game in my childhood that used this phrase. But projected into the current state of leading edge planar magnetic headphones, its almost a metaphor for how Dan Clark from MrSpeakers is looking to carve out a unique direction for his products.

Its true, most top tier planars are very heavy, usually over 400g without the cable attached. Dan’s newest creation slides in at a mere 290g, and at this year’s Rocky Mountain Audiofest he was truly sailing for new shores in the category.… Read the full article
