Being Frank about vinyl

By | March 21st, 2019|Categories: DAR|Tags: , , , , , , |

In the above photo, we see Frank Schröder, a Berlin-based tonearm manufacturer of over twenty years, sitting on my couch (in Mitte) and not on his own, 6 km away in Charlottenburg. He has just installed a Zu/Denon DL-103r to a Rega Planar 2 turntable — because if anyone in the world knows how to properly align a cartridge, it’s Schröder.

This Berliner made his first tonearm at 14 years old, sold his first tonearm at 17 years old and joined the world of high-end audio exhibitors in 1999 at the High-End event in Frankfurt (before it relocated to Munich).… Read the full article

Parasound shows off some incredible new products, Martin Logan stands tall as ever, Rega and Aurender did the cooking, and AudioQuest set the table.

If there was an award for “most fun and playful atmosphere” at an audio show, Parasound and Martin Logan’s exhibit at the Florida Audio Expo would be tops on my list of nominees. The pairing of Dennis Chern (of Martin Logan) and Phil Jackson (of Parasound, not the Chicago Bulls) is a recipe for great demonstrations, good music, and an engaging and fun atmosphere.… Read the full article

The look of love: Rega, iFi & Cabasse

By | November 8th, 2018|Categories: DAR|Tags: , , , , , |

In locating a new laptop we might look for the fastest CPU, the largest amount of RAM and the biggest hard drive. Hang everything else – performance is paramount.

Not every buyer works this way. Apple has built its Macbook success on selling last year’s hardware by offsetting any (perceived) performance hit with a sleeker shell, an increasingly lower-profile keyboard and a more elegant operating system. As many Alienware owners will attest, beauty remains in the eye of the beholder.

No matter what fibs we might tell ourselves, buying decisions aren’t based on performance alone.… Read the full article

Review: Getting my groove on with one-step vinyl releases

In business, it can be advantageous to cut out the middle man. In vinyl record production, too, less can be more. The latest mini-trend in the audiophile world is one-step recordings, which eliminate two parts of the manufacturing process.

Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab dropped its first one-step record in 2016 with Santana’s Abraxas, followed early this year by the Bill Evans Trio’s Sunday at the Village Vanguard. Both quickly sold out. This fall, MFSL added Donald Fagen’s The Nightfly and reportedly is planning a handful more in 2018.… Read the full article

Planar6-featured

The Planar 6 cometh.

UK high fidelity manufacturer, and turntable-design legend Rega has just released an update to it’s highly-capable RP6, and following the form of the last couple years with other turntable upgrades in the line, it is transitioning to the Planar 6 moniker.

Having owned an RP6, I can say that it held fast to the sonic qualities Rega turntables have become synonymous with: pace, rhythm, timing. resolution, musicality, and for good measure – affordability.
