CAF 2018: Arion Audio, LAMM, Aqua Acoustics and Can You Keep a Secret?

“I can’t tell you that much about the drivers—I still have two patents pending.”

It was clear from first glance that the Apollo Speaker System from Arion Audio wasn’t using your typical woofers, tweeters or panels to make impressive sounds at the 2018 Capital Audio Fest. These tall, substantial towers were fitted with a vertical array of drivers that looked more like a bank of EMIT tweeters from some massive old pair of Infinity IRS Betas. The addition of a small pair of subs on either side of the two main towers nearly completed that illusion of, in Warren Harding’s words, “normalcy.”

The Arion Audio speakers, however, are far from ordinary.… Read the full article

LinnenberG shows us that Ruhr valley sound, QLN gets our name right, Aqua Acoustic Quality goes all optological on us, Innuos gives us our moment of Zen, GigaWatt whips the power into shape, SGR HiFi Racks hold things up and yet still get us there on time, and Swiss Cables leave no holes in the signal.

The room could be best described; A seven brand volley of sound, from American “super-distributor” Mark Sossa at Well Pleased A|V. What Mark does to curate the best gear around is still a mystery to me.… Read the full article

RMAF 2018: Innuos Statement at Well Pleased AV

By | October 7th, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , |

Well Pleased AV was showcasing some spectacular sound, courtesy of some Qln loudspeakers, their Prestige Three floor standers. Some details: 8Ω, 87dB, down to 28Hz, $9,999/pair. Unassuming appearance, but with spooky-good imaging, the Qln speakers made the music eye-poppingly entertaining, and the overall sound in the room was a strong entry for best-in-show.

The other leading-role lineup in this room included the LinnenberG Telemann Pre ($5,600), the LinnenberG WIDOR amplifier ($19,000 — 150w @ 8Ω/250 @ 4Ω), an Aqua Hi-Fi Formula xHD DAC ($16,500), a Gigawatt PC-4 EVO+ power conditioner (10,300), and a whole loom of Swisscables.… Read the full article

‘Strayaaa: SGR CX4F MKII @ Munich High-End 2018

By | May 13th, 2018|Categories: DAR|Tags: , , , , , |

A 4-way active loudspeaker with boundary compensation and parametric EQ, but without Class D amplification and DSP, is the latest proposition from Melbourne’s SGR Audio.

Everything in the CX4F MKII floorstader is executed in the analogue domain – crossover included – with driver go juice squeezed from a quad of Class A/B amplifiers for the “world’s first current-drive loudspeaker system”. The tweeter is a 3cm textile dome. Beneath it, a 5cm textile dome for midrange delivery. Below that, we see a 16.5cm paper mid/bass driver augmented by four 16.5cm paper “long-throw subwoofer” drivers.… Read the full article
