Rocky Mountain Audio Fest 2019: Loudspeakers

Everyone loves a cliffhanger. And as I flew into Denver for RMAF’s latest installment I was about to find out how this one was going to shake out. Specifically, the change of venue, and the transposition of show dates from mid-October to early September (this year only), elements that are fraught with all kinds of risks—and potential rewards. The brand-spanking-new venue, the Gaylord Rockies Resort and Convention Center, certainly provided a distinct adjustment from the homey if increasingly ramshackle Denver Tech Center.… Read the full article

Steven Stone's 2019 Rocky Mountain Audio Fest Show Report

When you take a show from a hotel that’s been hosting that show for many years and move it to another hotel, it is, for all intents and purposes, a brand-new show. That’s exactly what happened to Rocky Mountain Audio Fest in 2019. Gone was the underachieving and dowdy old Marriott, replaced by the upwardly-mobile and near-to-the-airport Gaylord Rockies Resort and Convention Center. The new venue was shinier, and big enough to swallow up the whole show with room to spare without even a belch.… Read the full article

Q&A with Maurizio Aterini of Gold Note

What ignited your interest in the high end? Did it come from the music side or the electronics side? I was 8 years old when I started listening to my parents’ hi-fi system—a Lenco D75 and a Sony amplifier and speakers. I got fascinated by the magic of the music that came out of it. From that point on I have never stopped listening to music, and I have also tried to improve audio quality by founding Gold Note. What gear made up your first high-end system?… Read the full article

2019 Rocky Mountain Audio Fest

The high-end audio industry approached this year’s Denver show with more than a bit of trepidation. The venue was new and unknown, and the cost to exhibit significantly higher, leading many potential exhibitors to take a wait-and-see attitude. Consequently, the show was smaller than in previous years, with about 80 rooms. Moreover, poor communication about the “trade-only” day on the Thursday before the show’s public opening on Friday resulted in many exhibitors thinking that the trade day was actually set-up day.… Read the full article

Channel Islands Audio C-100S Power Amplifier

One of the more egalitarian aspects of high-performance audio is that not all manufacturers are multi-national corporations. Some are smaller, more focused operations such as Channel Islands Audio, which opened its doors in 1997, 22 years ago. Founded by designer Dusty Vawter—who began his audio career as the head of the technical service department at Audio Alchemy—Channel Islands Audio (CIA) specializes in well-built, high-performance audio components manufactured to last for more than one product cycle. What’s more, the components are not outrageously priced; those in CIA’s “Classic” line all retail for under $600.… Read the full article

Hong Kong High-End Audio Visual Show Report

Of all the years to get invited to visit Hong Kong to check out the show and audio scene there, this proved to be a more exciting one than most. No need to go into politics, but suffice to say that the local protesters didn’t put a damper on our small press trip’s activities. (Although the show wound down a couple of hours early on the last day as the demonstrations were scheduled to be moving into the area.) The show must go on, as they say.… Read the full article

The Audiophile Ecosystem

The Audiophile Ecosystem

To a non-audiophile, the passion for good sound can seem like a remarkably solitary endeavor. That civilian walks past our listening room and glances knowingly at the single chair facing the loudspeakers. Even if we’ve made the expansive gesture of replacing that chair with a sofa, the audiophile-in-charge is likely to insist that all present take a turn in the “sweet spot.” This is an experience that is, quite often, optimized for one, and the sound-conscious music-lover frequently finds himself alone in his sacred space at the end of a long day—and not necessarily unhappy about it.… Read the full article
