Anthem STR Preamplifier and STR Power Amplifier

Anthem STR Preamplifier and STR Power Amplifier

For eight years, an Anthem Statement D2v processor has been at the heart of my audio system. Multichannel music is a priority for me and in 2011, when I purchased the D2v, there were not many other suitable products at anywhere near the Anthem’s price of $7499. Even now, the current iteration—the D2v 3D ($9499)—has few competitors, and the original pre/pro has continued to serve me dependably with both surround and two-channel sources. But time marches on. The D2v has nary a USB input and its Asahi Kasei Microdevices (AKM) DAC chip isn’t DSD capable.… Read the full article

NAD Masters Series M10 Streaming Amplifier

Completed in 2018, the Statue of Unity, in the Gujarat region of India, is the largest statue in the world. It stands 597 feet tall, almost four times taller than the Statue of Liberty. If the Statue of Unity had shoes on its feet (which it does not), I would imagine the shoehorn it would use to slip said foot into said shoe would be about the same size as the shoehorn that the engineers at NAD used to cram the volume of functionality, refinement, and performance into the M10, an all-in-one component that measures 8.5" x 4" x 10.25".… Read the full article

D’Agostino Master Audio Systems Relentless Amplifier $250,000 Dan D’Agostino swung for the fences with his new monoblock amplifier. These 570-pound amplifiers are a rare fusion of beauty and the beast, a precious object that will be coveted by lovers of massive power and the copious benefits that it can confer upon moving-coil and planar loudspeakers. This is an amplifier that both smites and seduces the listener into complacent submission. From the very first note, its iron-fisted control, its vast soundstage, and its octave-to-octave balance are readily apparent.… Read the full article

MBL 101 X-treme Loudspeaker $260,000 In honor of the 101 X-tremes’ tenth anniversary, I invited these new and improved versions of MBL’s 2000-pound, twin-chassis flagship loudspeakers back into my listening room. Comprising two Radialstrahler columns—each column like a pair of 101Es with one set of radial woofers, radial mids, and radial tweets facing upward and the other facing down immediately above it in a D’Appolito arrangement—and twin outboard, powered subwoofer stacks (with two 12" aluminum-cone woofers in a push-push configuration per subwoofer and three, stackable subs per speaker side), the 101 X-tremes are giants.… Read the full article

Lyra Etna Cartridge $8995 Jacob Heilbrunn raved about the SL version of this mc cartridge, but that model’s very low output renders it a specialty product for use only in systems with very-high-gain phonostages. The non-SL version is the Etna for the rest of us. Thanks to its healthy 0.56mV output, more than double that of the SL, you can use it with virtually any phonostage. No doubt the SL, with its lower-mass coil, will extract somewhat finer detail and offer slightly sharper transients.… Read the full article

T+A Elektroakustik DAC 8 DSD Digital-to-Analog Converter $4450 Many digital audio experts maintain that it’s just not possible to optimize decoding of both PCM and DSD data streams with a one-lane architecture, even though there are plenty of DAC chips available that can handle both classes of files. With (at last count) 13 engineers on staff, T+A elektroakustik GmbH & Co. is a research-oriented manufacturer that builds its DACs and disc players with completely separate paths for PCM and DSD signals.… Read the full article
