RMAF 2018 – Electronics $15k and Up

Most Significant New Products VAC Statement 450i iQ integrated amplifier This new and state-of-the-art Statement 450i iQ integrated amp from Kevin Hayes of Valve Amplification Company (VAC) makes a statement indeed and epitomizes extreme audio. Standing—literally, as it’s a unique vertical design—nearly 4 feet tall and weighing in at 460 pounds, the VAC 450 iQ integrated is extremely striking, gorgeous-sounding, and not surprisingly, expensive at $150k. Essentially it combines the 450 S iQ power amp, the Statement Linestage, and the Statement Phonostage.… Read the full article

RMAF 2018 – Electronics Under $15k

This was my first Rocky Mountain Audio Fest in three years, as well as my first gander at the venerable Marriott Denver Tech Center following its much-needed facelift. Ironically, as it turns out, even a multi-million-dollar renovation couldn’t hold on to RMAF. Next year, the show is off to a sparkling new venue at the Gaylord Rockies Resort in nearby Aurora, CO. Now this place not only looks spectacular but word has it that sonically the rooms easily surpass those at the old DTC (which doesn’t set an especially high bar, I’m afraid).… Read the full article

FM Acoustics Resolution Series: FM 155-MKIIR Preamp, FM 122-MKII Phono Linearizer, FM 108-MKII Mono Amp

With the recent critical and commercial successes of relatively youthful Swiss high-end-audio companies like Soulution, CH Precision, Dartzeel, and others, electronics from the heart of Europe have never been held in higher esteem. The trouble is that their (well-deserved) success has pushed other companies, with longer but no less distinguished pedigrees, a bit into the shadows. I’m thinking particularly of the Zurich-based firm FM Acoustics, which was founded in the early 1970s when company owner and chief engineer Manuel Huber introduced his highly esteemed FM 800A amplifier (followed not long after by the standard-setting FM 212 phonostage).… Read the full article

dCS Rossini DAC/Player with Roon and MQA DAC, $24,000; player, $28,000 When originally introduced in 2015, the Rossini was an immediate hit. Though far from cheap, it nailed features and sound for the money. When you listen to the Rossini, all you hear is beautifully fleshed-out music. The player even manages to elicit from CDs much of what usually distinguishes SACDs. As for value, the Rossini easily vanquishes its little brother, the Debussy, and comes close to the performance of dCS’ Vivaldi flagship.… Read the full article

TAS Legacy: Audible Illusions Modulus Preamplifier

TAS Legacy: Audible Illusions Modulus Preamplifier

In the late 1970s, three talented Silicon Valley engineers—Bruce Moore, Tom Taylor, and Alan Priestly—formed Audible Illusions. Having already earned a reputation as a “tube wiz” from his noteworthy preamplifier designs for Precision Fidelity and Paragon, Moore teamed with Taylor to create the original Audible Illusions Dual Mono, Uranus 11, and Mini-Mite preamps. The diminutive Mini-Mite 1 was minimal in its design, providing only a volume and balance control along with inputs for phono, tuner, and tape. Three tubes—one 12AX7 and two 6DJ8s—and a regulated power supply completed the picture.… Read the full article

VPI Avenger Reference turntable and JMW 12 3DR Reference 3D-printed tonearm $20,000 (with JMW 12 3DR) VPI provides another great example of just how much better turntables and tonearms are getting as a result of the “return” of LPs. It has a remarkable ability to reveal all the musical detail in a given record and to get the best out of very different cartridges. I don’t share the touch of “digiphobia” that sometimes leads audiophiles back to LPs, but it is clear that VPI—and a number of other long-standing and new manufacturers of cartridges, tonearms, turntables, and phono preamps—is leading …… Read the full article

Naim Uniti Nova

Although Naim has been making audio gear since 1973, it is not your typical stodgy old-school hi-fi firm. Instead, it is one of those fleet-footed audio manufacturers whose products have continued to evolve over the years. Sure, it still makes separate preamps and power amplifiers as well as DACs (how quaint), but Naim’s latest components are one-box units far less demanding of room acreage. The Uniti Nova ($7495) is Naim’s highest-priced and most feature-laden single-box audio system. Add loudspeakers, and your stereo is almost complete.… Read the full article
