Sonus Faber Sonetto II Speakers | Review

By | December 30th, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , |

Should audio components always be 100% truthful to the source? Ahhh, that’s one of those questions that has resulted in untold audiophile angst, much like the supposed supremacy of analog over digital, or tubes vs. solid state. In the end, it’s ultimately up to the ear of the listener, and nothing else. If it sounds good to you, then it’s probably good.

Me? I’m an unabashed truth guy. That’s perhaps why I tend to gravitate toward pro audio DACs and speakers for instance, which are purposely designed to tell the truth: nothing more and nothing less.… Read the full article

Darko.Audio podcast #12 – Small speakers

By | December 3rd, 2018|Categories: DAR|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Sometimes we want steak, other times only sushi will do.

And so it goes with loudspeakers: we might lust for (full-range) floorstanders but either our room’s acoustics and/or our aesthetic sensibilities say otherwise: only standmounts can be accommodated.

Like food, it’s better to have too little than too much.

In our latest episode of the Darko.Audio podcast, Jeff Dorgay of TONEAudio and I discuss small loudspeakers with our informal chat romping through the following products (and more):

47 Labs Lens
Atacama Nexus 6i
Blumenstein Audio
DENSOTen Eclipse 510Z MKII
ELAC Debut 2.0
ELAC Uni-Fi UB5

RMAF 2018: ListenUp and How to Conquer a Hotel Room

By | November 18th, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , |

ListenUp has really built up their presence in the Mountain Time Zone over the last few years—the audio/video dealer now has four locations in Denver, Boulder, Colorado Springs and Albuquerque. Perhaps it’s a coincidence that I walked into four separate ListenUp rooms at the 2018 Rocky Mountain Audio Fest, each one presenting a great-sounding system at different price points.

Before I launch into all the wonderful equipment ListenUp brought to the Marriott, I do want to discuss one room anomaly found in many of the rooms—one that I’ve dealt with as an exhibitor many times.… Read the full article

RMAF 2018: A Critical Eye

I have completely bought into the music reproduction industry ever since I heard the difference between lamp cord as speaker wire and Monster brand wire oh so many years ago. Yes, I built Heathkit and Eico kits when I was a teenager in the middle 60’s, but really had no idea what was really going on.

During this time I was developing my ear for music. Big band and classical when I was alone, and rock when friends came over, as well as getting an inkling of how the music sounded different through different types of components and wire.… Read the full article

RMAF 2018: Pro-Ject’s Live MQA Performance

By | November 5th, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , |

About a week or two before RMAF, I started getting press releases and one in particular caught my eye.  MQA decided to hold a live event with a jazz ensemble in London during the show and stream it real-time to nearly a dozen MQA-equipped rooms.  The Misha Mullov-Abbado Group would play live in London and we would be able to decode the MQA stream for full MQA quality.  As I was overwhelmed with room coverage, I completely forgot about it until the morning of the event.  … Read the full article

Sonus Faber Electa Amator III & Gravis VI Sub – RMAF 2018

By | October 29th, 2018|Categories: Audiohead|Tags: , , , , , , , , |

Sonus Faber actually had two rooms rocking at RMAF this year. The bigger setup featured the new line-array XRT2.1Ks we covered at our visit to the NY World of McIntosh secured to a pair of the MC1.25KW monos. A very nice sounding system in its own right, but our attention was drawn even closer to the secondary room which housed an MA8000 integrated and MC80 transport to a pair of the new Electa Amator III bookshelf-style speakers.

The two-way speakers were sitting next to a new Gravis VI ($7k) sub due out in early December, but at the time of my visit wasn’t hooked up.… Read the full article

RMAF 2018: McIntosh Labs, Sonus Faber and a Gorgeous Sea of Binghamton Blue

By | October 28th, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , |

Can I talk about McIntosh Labs without mentioning the beautiful blue meters? Can anyone? Should I even bother?

As I wandered down the corridors at the 2018 Rocky Mountain Audio Fest, those ubiquitous blue meters beckoned me to enter the two Mac rooms and bask in that legendary glow. I can’t resist this timeless gear, mostly because I’ve always had a secret lust in my heart for Mac ever since I first set the loading for my cartridge on a borrowed McIntosh MC2300 preamp via the remote control.… Read the full article
