2019 Editors' Choice Awards: Desktop Loudspeakers

KEF Muo $149 This wonderfully portable wireless Bluetooth speaker delivers the sonic goods well beyond expectations, especially given its petite dimensions. Intended for those who want quality listening on the go, it’s a tiny two-way that pumps out big, full, and expansive sound with respectable resolution—and even reproduces some sense of soundstaging on many recordings. It also features a mini-version of the same driver technology found in the maker’s Muon flagship. Audioengine HD6/HDP6A $699/$499 Comfortable on a desk or shelf, flanking a flat panel, or out in the room on a pair of stands, the powered, DAC-equipped, Bluetooth-enabled HD6 loudspeaker …… Read the full article

DALI Callisto 2C Active Digital Speaker System

When Robert Harley asked me to return to high-end audio reviewing after a many-year hiatus, he had a product in mind. Oh sure, he stated it was a “new class of product” that TAS would “like to have more coverage of in the future.” But really it was the ultimate system to lure an audiophile back into the fold after a long period of stagnation. According to DALI (Danish Audiophile Loudspeaker Industries): “The Callisto 2 C is the stand-mount solution in our new wireless ecosystem that empowers you to easily access all your high-res music directly from your smart device.” …… Read the full article

Building a Listening Room

Building a dedicated space for music listening is the ultimate commitment to the hobby. It’s expensive and complex, and when you’re finished there’s no guarantee that the room will sound good. But if you take that plunge and the stars align, a room specifically designed for optimizing sound quality can allow a high-end system to realize its greatest potential. I recently realized a lifelong goal of building a serious listening room and will share my experience with you. Although I had built two homes before with dedicated rooms, this one is more ambitious.… Read the full article

Munich High End 2019: Seen and Heard

Editor's Note: The intended format of this report is a photo essay. My full, more traditional text-driven report on Electronics and sounds at the show will be forthcoming. Scroll and enjoy! Lifestyle Demos Like it or not, "lifestyle" audio continues to emerge, not only in the form of new products such as all-in-ones, but also could be seen in more serious audio setups from venerable companies who sought to create a more pleasingly home-like environment inside their demo rooms. Color Rules The use of vivid color—burnt orange and red in particular—for serious audio components' materials and/or finishes stood out at …… Read the full article

Harbeth Monitor 40.2 40th Anniversary Edition Loudspeaker

Go to Harbeth’s website and you’re greeted with the company blurb: “the world’s best loved loudspeakers.” An assertion like this obviously cannot be proved, but there’s no question the brand generates a singular loyalty at once fierce and happy: Harbeth owners really do love their speakers, rarely parting with them unless moving to a model higher up the product line. Two years ago I reviewed the latest version of the flagship, the Monitor 40.2, designed, like all Harbeths, by the company owner Alan Shaw and I thought so highly of it I bought the review pair and haven’t looked back.… Read the full article

Munich High End 2019: Loudspeakers

Munich High End 2019: Loudspeakers Jonathan Valin The biggest and best audio show in the world was, I’m pleased to say, good-sounding on the whole, which has not always been the case in the past. Oh, there were the usual room nodes and specular reflections, but more often than not the speakers on display showed well in spite of any added boom or sibilance. Please note that I had to cover everythingin the way of loudspeakers this year—from Elac’s phenomenal $2400 Carina to Living Voice’s half-million dollar Vox Palladian.… Read the full article

Q&A with Craig and Christina Milnes of Wilson Benesch

What ignited your interest in the high end? There wasn’t one thing, but some of the more important influences would be my uncle’s high-end system based upon Gilbert Briggs-design home-built loudspeakers, and the fact my father played trumpet every day of his life and performed in a number of bands professionally both before, during, and after the war. But I suppose the real catalyst was reading the news in a number of high-end audio magazines in the late 1980s that stated “analog is dead and CD is the future.” I wrote a business plan to secure research funding from Her …… Read the full article
