AudioLabs researcher receives KlarText Award

Yesterday, Christof Weiß, who works at the International Audio Laboratories Erlangen, received the KlarText Award – the Klaus Tschira Foundation’s prize for science communication. His winning entry in the Computer Science category was entitled Das ist Haydn. Ganz sicher! and explains in an easy to understand manner the key ideas and results of his doctoral thesis about algorithms that can recognize musical styles. Christof Weiß, born in Regensburg, Germany, in 1986, studied physics at the University of Würzburg and composition at the University of Music Würzburg.… Read the full article

ORPHEUS – the Movie

The ORPHEUS project, pioneering the development of an end-to-end object-based media chain for audio content, was officially concluded in May 2018, when the second and final ORPHEUS workshop was held at Institut für Rundfunktechnik (IRT) in Munich. There, the ten project partners presented their findings to an auditorium filled with more than 100 broadcast and audio professionals from all over the globe. Fraunhofer IIS Audio System Selected for Chinese 3D Audio Standard for UHD TV

China’s AVS 3D Audio Task Group has chosen Fraunhofer IIS as the transmission audio codec solution provider for the upcoming 3D Audio standard that will be used in the country’s 4K UHD broadcast. Via Licensing Adds xHE-AAC To AAC Patent Pool License Program

Via Licensing Corporation announced the addition of Extended High Efficiency AAC (xHE-AAC) to the Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) patent pool.  The expanded patent pool license will be available at no additional cost to licensees, starting in Q4 of 2017. World’s 1st Terrestrial UHD TV Service With MPEG-H Audio

Experiencing the stadium sound in your own living room as if you were present at the football match is just one feature of the new MPEG-H Audio technology. Specifically developed for next generation television and streaming systems, the audio codec is now part of the Korean standard for terrestrial Ultra High Definition TV recently published by South Korean standards organization Telecommunications Technology Association (TTA). EVS reaches Europe: Vodafone Germany to start EVS service

USA, Japan and now: Germany! EVS is the audio codec of choice for Vodafone Germany’s VoLTE service. After T-Mobile USA and NTT DoCoMo, the German provider is now the third mobile network provider worldwide and the first in Europe to officially join the club and implement the codec. EVS was developed within 3GPP and offers HiFi call quality for speech and audio alike.
