AXPONA 2018: Nick Doshi Builds a Time Machine

By | May 15th, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , |

A few months before AXPONA, Nick Doshi of Doshi Audio showed up at The Audio Company, a superb local hi-fi store in Marietta, Georgia.  The program was to show local audiophiles what tape machines could do with an excellent playback system featuring Nick’s well-regarded tape pre and a J-Corder modified tape deck. Using upper-end Focal speakers and Constellation gear, the sound quality was superb and I believe it really opened some minds on what good tape playback can offer. In short, a good tape rig easily remains the best analog playback we have today.… Read the full article

This year dawned with plenty of questions facing the high-end audio industry. The most pressing were: Would the U.S. economy hold up, allowing manufacturers and retailers to stay afloat? Would vinyl continue its revival, possibly enticing young people into a hobby that’s in danger of aging out? And, would the recent growth in the show circuit create too much of a good thing?

That third question was still hanging in the air as September arrived and the last two of the record seven major domestic gatherings for 2017 were scheduled to go off within weeks of each other, putting a strain on the finances and staff of audio companies and creating decisions for potential out-of-town attendees.… Read the full article

RMAF 2017: More audiophiles want to roll tape

When I started seeing reel-to-reel tape decks popping up at high-end shows a few years ago, I wrote it off as a novelty. Yes, good old vinyl was booming, but tape? Really? Then I heard Sonny Boy Williamson singing “The Sky Is Crying,” taken from a low-generation master, and reached down to ratchet my jaw back up off the floor.

Yes, tape can sound great. And it’s definitely becoming a thing. How big a thing? I asked United Home Audio owner Greg Beron that question Friday at the Rocky Mountain Audio Fest.… Read the full article

Analogue Productions Goes to the Dogs: RCA Living Stereos on 15-ips Reel-to-Reel Tape

By | September 1st, 2017|Categories: Positive Feedback|Tags: , , , , , , , , , |

Shaded dogs that is!

This isn’t the first time these absolutely legendary RCA Living Stereo recordings have appeared on reel-to-reel tape (Scheherazade (FTC2017) was according to Discogs released in 1960 on four-track tape). This is, however, the very first time this pair of now close to 60 year old recordings are available on real time duped, 15-ips, 2-track tape. And what a special treat!

Back in the mid-’50s—two years prior to the release of the first stereo record in 1957—reel-to-reel stereo tape ruled the roost.… Read the full article

Blank Recording Tape Comparison: Quantegy GP-9 vs. SM-900

By | August 28th, 2017|Categories: Positive Feedback|Tags: , , , , , , , , , |

Blank tapes:  Not usually the topic of an article in a high-end audio journal! But Greg Beron, he of United Home Audio fame, with its treasure trove of RTR tape recorders, knows whereof he speaks. He has lots of experience with tapes, and here shares a few comments about two tapes that are currently available. For those of us with RTR machines, his thoughts will be of real interest.

For more, read on…

Doshi Audio V3.0 Tapestage: Choices, Choices, Choices

By | July 15th, 2017|Categories: Positive Feedback|Tags: , , , , , , , |

To go reel-to-reel tape or high resolution digital? That was the question facing this basically all analog person some ten years ago. No, there wasn’t a lot of tape software available at the time but the same held true for high-rez digital too. Not to mention that digital playback technology was (still is?) changing from week-to-week and the powers to be couldn’t even decide on a viable format (PCM vs. DSD). They still haven’t. After carefully weighing all my options—and despite the paucity of software at the time—it was time to take that leap of faith into the tape world.… Read the full article

High End 2017: The Munich Experience, and Rafe’s best of the Show

High-End-Munich-2017-Wrap-Feature

So long, and thanks for all the memories.

I could see his lips moving but I couldn’t hear a word the guy next to me was saying. We were in the Silbatone room at the MOC for High End in Munich, and I had gone the aural equivalent of snow blind while taking in the massive vintage Western Electric horn system that was playing. Prior to attending High End I had read, and heard firsthand from friends, and associates that the big WE horns that Silbatone rock there were a must see for me when I went.… Read the full article

High End 2017: Vitus comes to life with reels and records

By | June 21st, 2017|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , , |

It was early on day 1, we had planned our route and I was ready to experience the High End show.  We entered the Vitus room on the 3rd floor, home to Vitus electronics, the VPI Titan turntable, Gobel High End Epoque Fine speakers, Purist Audio Design cables, a Studer Revox A810 reel to reel player. The rooms in Munich are typically bigger then in US shows, and Vitus space looked inviting and was perfectly lit.  It was screaming, sit down, relax, and drop the needle.… Read the full article
