Parasound and Tekton | RMAF 2019

By | September 19th, 2019|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , , |

I made a joke to a fellow show attendee when I entered the Parasound and Tekton room at the 2019 Rocky Mountain Audio Fest and I saw the massive, almost phone booth-size Tekton Moab speakers. Based on what I read from John Richardson’s review of the Tekton Pendragon loudspeakers from a few years ago, I know that Tekton is one of those new generation loudspeaker manufacturers that offer an enormous amount of product for surprisingly little money. So I took one look at these monsters, each one with a 15-tweeter array, and said, “Yeah, these probably retail for $4000.”

Saturday’s Highlights | RMAF 2019

Saturday at RMAF 2019. The big day. The day when most people show up to high-end audio shows, the day when everything exciting happens. The halls weren’t packed because the layout at the Gaylord Resort is so spread out, but many of the rooms themselves were packed with attendees. The Rocky Mountain Audio Fest is back!

It took me three times to get into the Parasound and Tekton room, where the amazing little $1195 NewClassic 200 integrated amp/DAC drove the huge Tekton Moabs, which inexplicably cost just $4500/pair.… Read the full article

The Grand Finale | The Occasional

[Editor’s Note: We published a truncated version of John DeVore’s “The Grand Finale: the Race for the First Automatic Winding Chronograph”, in the Spring Issue of The Occasional. Due to space considerations in the magazine’s format, we could only publish a more condensed version of John’s fascinating article, so we decided to present his entire article here. Enjoy!]

I’ve been fascinated by the complexity, ingenuity, and beauty of chronograph watches since I was a kid.… Read the full article

Marc’s Wrap Up | T.H.E. Show 2019

By | July 14th, 2019|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile, Stereophile|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

After T.H.E. Show 2019, I did something that I should have done at High-End 2019 in Munich–I stayed a couple of extra days after the show ended. A good friend of mine called me just the other day and asked me how Munich was, mentioning how exciting it was that I finally made it to Europe after all these years. The truth is, I should have lingered for a few more days, maybe a week. Six weeks later, Munich was a blur in my mind like I never really went.… Read the full article

PranaFidelity, Helius, E.A.R., Furutech | T.H.E. Show 2019

By | June 22nd, 2019|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , |

In the upcoming Summer Issue of The Occasional, I talk about all of the fantastic brands I’ve discovered over the last year or so, pretty much since I’ve joined the Part-Time Audiophile team. PranaFidelity is another one of those brands, a manufacturer that’s out there creating a buzz about their products despite my relative ignorance. At T.H.E. Show 2019 I was finally able to familiarize myself with this Denver-based company and its kind and thoughtful owner, Steven Norber, and I had that slightly obtuse feeling of someone who has just discovered something that everyone else already knows.… Read the full article

High-End 2019 show coverage brought to you by Core Power Technologies

So what did I learn during my first trip to High End 2019 in Munich, which also happened to be the first time I set foot in Europe? Let’s go through the list:

  1. Go to Germany for the wurst, not the burgers. I found a food truck outside the MOC at High End 2019 touting burgers made from 100% Angus beef, and I was hungry and it sounded like a pretty good idea.

dCS Bartok, HIFIMAN, WyWires | High End 2019

High-End 2019 show coverage brought to you by Core Power Technologies

When I signed up to cover dCS at High End 2019, I was thinking BIG DIGITAL. You know, a very expensive system in a big room with one, or several, six-figure dCS stacks. That room existed, with Wilson Audio Sasha DAW loudspeakers and Dan D’Agostino amps, featuring a notably pure and clean sound that you would probably expect from such esteemed companies. I sat in that room, took notes, and I was duly impressed.… Read the full article

DALLAS (PTA) — The rest of the Part-Time Audiophile team are packing their bags for the upcoming High End Munich audio show coming in a few weeks. It’s gonna be epic. According to various news sources, High End Munich 2019 will have over 1 million exhibition rooms, an indoor water-park, a schnitzel-eatin’ contest, and Formula 1-style go-kart racing. As for myself, I’ll be staying in America, but not staying put — I’m headed to an audio show in The Lone Star State.

Luxman and Triangle | AXPONA 2019

AXPONA 2019 Show Coverage brought to you by Core Power Technologies

I’ve had Luxman on my mind lately. Not just because I’ve been using the Luxman LX-380 integrated amplifier in my main system for the last couple of months and I’m quite smitten–that review should appear in the Summer issue of The Occasional. Not because I’m really lusting after those newer turntables from Luxman such as the PD-171A ($6995) and the PD-151 ($3895), which were featured in the Luxman and Triangle room at AXPONA 2019.… Read the full article
