The Magical Magico A3 – THE Show 2018

By | June 21st, 2018|Categories: Audiohead|Tags: , , , |

The last and final favorite of THE Show this year. The Magico A3 ($9.8k) on full color, no-bleed display in room 213 is the latest $10k iteration of traditionally uber high end loudspeaker brand coming down to the masses.. sort of. At $10k its still half the price of a new car, but at least that car isn’t an fully loaded Tesla Model X anymore.

I’ll take that half-way option, myself. What I heard from the A3 paired with a VAC front end was indeed pretty magical as the name implies.… Read the full article

Technics, YG Acoustics and D’Agostino – THE Show 2018

By | June 14th, 2018|Categories: Audiohead|Tags: , , , , , |

While I would be lying if I were to say that I wasn’t a little disappointed that D’Agostino didn’t bring the new Relentless Monos to THE Show in Irvine, it was still very refreshing to hear two pairs of their M400 Momentum series all firing in harmony. Surprisingly enough, it was also the first time I’ve ever seen the gorgeous aluminum and copper chassis in black as well.

Providing the front end to the YG Acoustics-backed rig was the popular Japan-based Technics brand, specifically the new reference SL-1000R  turntable (~$20k).… Read the full article

Ryan Speakers, PASS Labs and PS Audio – The Show 2018

By | June 7th, 2018|Categories: Audiohead|Tags: , , , , , , |

There are many pairs of things that provide a greater value together than apart. Peanut butter and jelly, Jack and Coke, Jamo and Ginger…well a lot cheap drinks really. The one thing I like the most at audio shows is detail + tone, and Ryan speakers in room 315 at THE SHOW in Irvine nailed it with their new pair of S Series S610 bookshelves ($4k).

Recently unveiled at Munich, the new S Series standmount is not even up on the company site yet – but bigger brother S840 floor stander is.… Read the full article

Cambridge Shows Off Their Edge – THE Show 2018

By | June 6th, 2018|Categories: Audiohead|Tags: , , , , |

While its been refreshing to see some of the uber high end brands come down to more moderate price points, its almost equally interesting to see everyman budget brands take a stab at a bolder statement product. It isn’t hard to tell that Cambridge Audio calls England their home given the massive oversized union jack on the floor of their room and the mantra “Great British Sound Since 1968”, but the attentive and informative reps on the 2nd floor of T.H.E.… Read the full article

MBL and UHA, Two Of Our Favorite Letter Combinations – THE Show 2018

By | June 4th, 2018|Categories: Audiohead|Tags: , , , , , |

It wasn’t the first time we had seen Germany-based MBL and reel-to-reel renovator United Home Audio exhibiting together, but the pair’s synergistic sound and late night listening sessions are always a welcome add to any audio show. This tour found them in one of the larger rooms located on the 1st floor of the Marriott Spectrum in Irvine, not too far off from the show registration.

While the room was perhaps a bit boomier than usual, the full range 4-way mbl 101 E MKII Radialstrahler ($70.5k/pair) has always been one of our favorites of the reference lineup.… Read the full article
