CAF 2018: BorderPatrol, Volti Audio, Triode Wire Labs and Where the Magic Is

By | November 11th, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , |

Part-Time Audiophile readers are probably already aware of our enthusiasm for the products of BorderPatrol and Volti Audio. Since I am new to the staff, I am also new to the distinctive and engaging sound accomplished by these two manufacturers. I did get a brief taste of the combo while visiting PTA publisher Scot Hull a few months ago—he was using BorderPatrol amplification and the new Volti Rival speakers in his main system. We were evaluating one of Lyn Stanley’s glorious reel-to-reel limited releases, and I was mightily impressed with the big effortless sound.… Read the full article

There are over 1,000,000 brands exhibiting here at Capital Audiofest … okay, okay, — I don’t know how many brands exactly, but it does seem like a lot this year. Which makes 2018’s event feel every bit like the “premier show of North America’s eastern coast”, that we often claim it to be. Fear not, as the rag-tag band of misfits from Part-Time Audiophile are here to be your surrogate audio show guide.

Here are some surefire rooms to get you started off on the right foot.Read the full article

RMAF 2018: Vinnie Rossi, Triode Wire Labs, Harbeth; More than the sum of its parts

Vinnie Rossi was showing off his latest and greatest L2 Signature Preamplifiers and L2 Monoblocks, which could handle a slew Harbeth speakers (big and small) extraordinarily well. At Rocky Mountain Audio Fest the Harbeth 40.2 Anniversary speakers flat-out rocked the show when tethered — via Triode Wire Labs cable — to Vinnie’s new mono-block powerhouses. Without any doubt, a must see (and hear) exhibit at the show.

Firmly grounded with a history in studio and pro sound, Amphion returns to home audio with a stable of speaker designs that to my ear offer comforting treble and mid-range that compliment the Amphion idea of how bass should sound.… Read the full article

RMAF 2018: The Allure of the Rockies

By | October 5th, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Around 20 years ago, I met my friend Howard at the local Atlanta audio club.  Over time Howard and I became pals in part because we both loved Magnepan speakers.  But we also loved exploring various audio tweaks and had a lot of lively discussions around how to get the best sound for our, at the time, limited audio dollars.  Sometime around six years ago, Howard and I started to attend the Rocky Mountain Audio Fest.  We both loved the show and the hospitality of the great Colorado Audio Society.… Read the full article

Border Patrol and Volti Audio – AXPONA 2018

By | April 16th, 2018|Categories: Audiohead|Tags: , , , , |

by Rafe Arnott

When you wander the halls of a big audiophile trade show, you start to get what many refer to as “ear fatigue” or what I call “burnout.”

Putting in several hours running from room to room to take in whatever is the latest, and greatest from high-fidelity manufacturers spanning the globe at AXPONA this past weekend, I realized I was starting to slow down late in the afternoon on Saturday, and so sought solace in what I like to refer to as a “safe space.”

Border Patrol, and Volti Audio stay connected with Triode Wire Labs in a fairly regular fashion at hifi shows, and their rooms always qualify as a place to recharge, and sooth myself.… Read the full article

AXPONA 2018: Triode Wire Labs, Border Patrol, Volti Audio

By | April 14th, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , |

There is a reason.

If we’re being serious, this is obvious — because there’s always a reason. It may be stupid, it may be incidental, it may be irrelevant, it may be serendipity, or God, or luck, or spooky-action-at-a-distance, but even then, there’s a reason. But in the case of “why this particular room sounds really good”, the reasons are a bit more straightforward.

Chalk one more up to Team Natural.

Today’s iteration of The System has quite a bit of newness.… Read the full article

Triode Wire Labs' Cables: A Looming Star

Triode Wire Labs Cables

Triode Wire Labs’ Cables Come to the Tune Saloon!

All right, you caught me. Triode Wire Labs is already a Star. Their products have been favorably reviewed by numerous respected audio publications, including several appearing in the cyber-pages of Positive Feedback. I never expected to write about them too, but it seemed that every time I attended an audio show, terrific sounding systems like Volti/Border Patrol, and Vinnie Rossi/Harbeth, were using Triode Wire Labs products. After AXPONA 2017, I simply surrendered to the inevitable and requested a complete cable “loom” to evaluate.… Read the full article

LA Audio Show 2017: Volti’s ‘compact’ Rival speaks with big voice

The Volti Rival.

laas6

I had to chuckle a little to myself when Volti Audio rolled out what it described as its “compact” loudspeaker at the Los Angeles Audio Show.

Calling the new model small, however is kind of like describing a Mercedes-Benz C-Class sedan as “entry level.” Even with that car, you’re still getting plenty of luxury.

It’s much the same with the Rival ($7,900 to $11,900 USD/pair, depending on options). It’s still a Volti, and you’re still looking at a lot of speaker.… Read the full article

AXPONA 2017: Music From Another Room, Part 3

A photojournal by Eric Franklin Shook

You can’t just say “It’s awesome, buy it.”

Eliciting a gut reaction of confidence in consumers who speak your name in conversations of top tier service and products is neither straightforward, measurable, or paint by numbers. Decades of experience and market research at all levels of the supply chain are prerequisite to attaining a seat at the table with the most trusted names in hi-fi. Building a good product is not enough. Anyone telling you different has probably watched Field Of Dreams too many times.… Read the full article
