AXPONA 2019 Show Coverage brought to you by the LSA Group

By Paul Elliott

As you have read from all the glowing posts, AXPONA has developed into a great show, well run by JD Events. This is a professional company, and one that understands our industry and our people. Their staff get it, and they are always there with a smile and a hand.

This new venue seems to be working for the show. At the least, they have announced the dates for the next two years at the Renaissance Schaumburg: April 17 – 19, 2020, and April 16-18, 2021, so get used to it.… Read the full article

AXPONA 2019 Show Coverage brought to you by Core Power Technologies

CHICAGO (PTA) — Absolutely shocking! Vinnie Rossi debuts his new Stiletto 15 open-baffle speaker that does so well to find the absolute truth in the music, that each recording we demonstrated with carried along with it the recording engineer’s unique personality. Vinnie’s new Stiletto 15 loudspeaker gets out of the way, imparting nothing of itself in coloration. It delivers stunning levels of detail from top to bottom. For a first foray into loudspeakers, Vinnie certainly has come in like a seasoned professional.… Read the full article

AXPONA 2019 Show Coverage brought to you by the LSA Group

I believe this is the third time I’ve reported on the combination of BorderPatrol, Volti Audio and Triode Wire Labs in the last few months, so you’d think I’d have a handle on the sound by now. When I entered Room 688 at AXPONA 2019, I thought okay, these guys again, I’m gonna be impressed as usual but will I have anything new to say about this otherwise unique system?… Read the full article

CHICAGO (PTA) — This year’s AXPONA audio show is already on course to be their biggest, and most newsworthy yet. Lots of product debuts are happening at this show, and we’re committed to bringing you the most extensive coverage of what’s NEW and out-of-this-world in the hi-fi universe.

Let’s continue with the Must See Rooms for Sunday (Day Three) of Axpona 2019

ROOM #488 — Vinnie Rossi, Triode Wire Labs

30 Years with Border Patrol | AXPONA 2019

AXPONA 2019 Show Coverage brought to you by Core Power Technologies

I saw a little note taped to the door, congratulating Gary Dews of BorderPatrol on his anniversary. Apparently, he’s spent 30 years “doing time” in high-end audio — a remarkable achievement for what has largely been a one-man-band, cheerfully beating the drum of “quality power supplies” and “tube audio sound” in a time that seems to have largely stepped out of that mode. I first met Dews at the Capital Audiofest back in 2010, and as I wrote then, I was gobsmacked by the sound of his decidedly not vintage-sounding gear.… Read the full article

FLORIDA 2019 – Tortuga Audio, Triode Wire Labs, a mystifying and luxurious sound

Tortuga Audio Products brought forth one of the most interesting loudspeakers of the show — the LoggerHead, a 2.8 cubic foot two-way ported speakers sans internal passive crossovers. The loudspeakers do require external crossovers and bi-amping (not included) and are custom made to order. Triode Wire Labs tied it all together with red, white, and blue.

Furthermore from Tortuga were two pieces that intrigued me endlessly, the LDR3.V25 Passive Preamp, a light dependent photo-resistor (LDR) based single-ended volume controller with graphic OLED display and three input switching, and their TPB.V1 tube preamp buffer.… Read the full article

Florida 2019: Friday with Paul

by Paul Elliott

Michael Fremer gets the alignment right and cuts the ribbon to open the first Florida Audio Expo!

All the work Alan and his team has now come together and the show opened to the public at 10 am.  A good steady stream of head off to the exhibit rooms.

Tortuga Audio

It’s hard to decide where to start (way too much stress), so I randomly fell into the Tortuga Audio room.  Morten Sissener has and interesting take on an old idea of using LDR (Light Dependent Resistor) for controlling volume. … Read the full article

Border Patrol, Volti Audio, Triode Wire Labs – CAF 2018

Border Patrol Amplifiers

You can also catch my writing at AH’s sister site — Part-Time Audiophile — where you may also be aware of our staff’s collective fondness for BorderPatrol, Volti Audio, and Triode Wire Labs gear. In the past it was Scot Hull (our publisher), John Stancavage (writer) or Rafe Arnott (former editor) who jumped at the chance to “claim their exhibit rooms for write-up“ in the name of “divide and conquer.” Capital Audiofest 2018 arrives with Scot Hull now focusing more on publisher duties, and Rafe Arnott having moved on to waiting tables somewhere (managing editor InnerFidelity/AudioStream).… Read the full article

Sound Insight made the subs, GT Audio Works made the speakers, Pass Labs made gobs of power, Semper Sonus provides the mechanical wizardry, Esoteric and Vu Jade Audio kept things nice and dark, while Triode Wire Labs and ATS Acoustics kept everything in check.

Sound Insight is a New York state dealer with two showrooms in Long Island; one in Massapequa, and the other in Huntington. Here at Capital Audiofest, stood one of the companies greatest contributions to hi-fi.

The GT Audio Works GTA3R planar ribbon loudspeakers use a proprietary membrane, and no crossover.… Read the full article

CAF 2018: BorderPatrol, Volti Audio, Triode Wire Labs and Where the Magic Is

By | November 11th, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , |

Part-Time Audiophile readers are probably already aware of our enthusiasm for the products of BorderPatrol and Volti Audio. Since I am new to the staff, I am also new to the distinctive and engaging sound accomplished by these two manufacturers. I did get a brief taste of the combo while visiting PTA publisher Scot Hull a few months ago—he was using BorderPatrol amplification and the new Volti Rival speakers in his main system. We were evaluating one of Lyn Stanley’s glorious reel-to-reel limited releases, and I was mightily impressed with the big effortless sound.… Read the full article
