Objectivity and the Abstract Truth

Objectivity and the Abstract Truth

Every hobby, by its very nature, runs the constant risk of losing contact with its own foundational intent or purpose. The closeness of specialization can, over time, turn into an abstraction where the tether to that hobby’s original essence is broken. Before the “phile” (lover) realizes it, the abstraction has become the essential. What’s true and valuable has shifted. Microsoft has an interesting TV ad campaign currently airing that features the American hip hop artist/poet Common. The message of this marketing effort, broadly pointing towards the future of artificial intelligence, is interesting less for the ideas being promoted, and more …… Read the full article

2018 New York Audio Show Report

2018 New York Audio Show Report

Overview The history of the New York Audio Show can best be described as rocky. Decades ago, the show was run by Stereophile magazine, and it was a juggernaut. I remember making an annual pilgrimage from Washington, D.C. to the New York Hilton to experience that show’s endless rooms, each packed with lust-worthy gear and ravenous audiophiles. But after Stereophile pulled out for lack of funding, New York languished for years without a major regional show—an unholy state of affairs for one of the country’s largest high-end audio markets.… Read the full article

VPI Avenger Reference Turntable

VPI Avenger Reference Turntable

Let me begin this review by noting that the VPI Avenger Reference is part of a steadily growing number of “extreme turntables.” It sells for $17,000 without an arm, $20,000 with the JMW 12-3D Reference arm, and $20,800 with the new VPI “Fat Boy” tonearm. It also sets a standard of sound quality that almost demands that it be equipped with cartridges that cost well over $1000, and, at that, it still isn’t the most “extreme” turntable in the VPI line.… Read the full article

D’Agostino Master Audio Systems, YG Acoustics, and Alma Music & Audio Demonstrate Mega System

San Diego retailer Alma Music & Audio, D’Agostino Master Audio Systems, and YG Acoustics teamed up in mid-November to demonstrate what can only be described as a mega-system. I attended the event as was treated to some of the best music playback I’ve heard. Dan D’Agostino was on hand to showcase his latest creation, the Relentless monoblock power amplifier. This all-out assault on the state of the art in power-amplifier design can output 1500W into 8 ohms, doubling that power into 4 ohms.… Read the full article

How to Listen to Stereo

How to Listen to Stereo

Stereo in its most basic form is a robust medium. One can hear the ancient demos of ping-pong games and trains traveling from left to right or right to left on cheap computer speakers sitting on a glass tabletop. But if you want to hear the real sonic glories that stereo is capable of—the insight into the original recording venue, the sense of expansive space, the depth and width of image, the focus and location of instruments, and all the rest—then you need not only good equipment but also very careful setup of the system in the listening room.… Read the full article

Second Report:  The MAG-LEV ML1 Levitating Turntable

MAG-LEV ML1 Levitating Turntable

It’s time for an update on the MAG-LEV ML1 levitating turntable. You’ll find my world premiere review HERE.

After four months in heavy use and with my modifications on board, I am pleased to report that the ML1, for all its novelty and glamour, is also a high performing, exceptionally musical turntable, even for the jaded audiophile like myself. Once one is used to its procedures for playback, I’ve only experienced one tiny glitch, which did not repeat in its entire playback time to date.… Read the full article
