Building a Listening Room

Building a Listening Room

Building a dedicated space for music listening is the ultimate commitment to the hobby. It’s expensive and complex, and when you’re finished there’s no guarantee that the room will sound good. But if you take that plunge and the stars align, a room specifically designed for optimizing sound quality can allow a high-end system to realize its greatest potential. I recently realized a lifelong goal of building a serious listening room and will share my experience with you. Although I had built two homes before with dedicated rooms, this one is more ambitious.… Read the full article

MUNICH 2019: Sources and Cables

MUNICH 2019: Sources and Cables

Munich High End is undoubtedly the largest high-end audio extravaganza in the world. It not only featured some of the best products recently displayed at AXPONA Chicago (another incredible show!), but also a wide array of products thus far unseen on North American shores. I’ve never set eyes on so many turntables, horn loudspeakers, and exotic products in one venue! My “beat” this year was sources and cables—essentially every room at the show. As this was a daunting, if not impossible, task, I focused on those sources and cables I could actually hear in systems, rather than those on static …… Read the full article

Audio Rambligs – Our Journey Ends with the Montrose Turntable from Fern & Roby

By | May 9th, 2019|Categories: Positive Feedback|Tags: , |

So where to begin? I dunno… how about at the beginning? Okay so my first turntable was an AR-XA with the Shure VR-15 cartridge. This combo spun vinyl as I had never heard before and served me well for a good number of years. But then for whatever reason I went with a Sony PS X600 turntable with their bio-tracer arm. Same cartridge, but way different. Really tracked the LPs, but never felt we were getting it all. Was good and served us well enough.… Read the full article

2019 Editors’ Choice Awards: Turntables $400-$4,000

2019 Editors’ Choice Awards: Turntables $400-$4,000

Pro-Ject Debut Carbon DC $399 The most significant upgrade to Pro-Ject’s latest Debut is found in the model’s name, which refers to the lighter, more rigid, single-piece 8.6" carbon-fiber ’arm tube that replaces the Debut III’s aluminum tube. Pre-mounted with Ortofon’s 2M Red moving-magnet cartridge, the Carbon offers all one expects from a modestly priced ’table. It doesn’t excel in any one area but gets the basics so right that it’s hard to criticize what’s lacking. Audio-Technica AT-LP7 $799 There’s a surprising amount of competition right now in the sub-$1000 turntable market.… Read the full article

AXPONA 2019: Analog Sources

AXPONA 2019: Analog Sources

Following on the heels of last year’s success, AXPONA 2019 was even more upbeat and enjoyable for showgoers and exhibitors alike. The available space was expanded to accommodate more offerings and, as a result, the attendees had more options for listening, looking, and shopping. Due to the size of the show and a second coverage area assignment, there are new products (such as the items in the Expo Hall) that are not covered in this report because of time constraints. Frankly, there were more items than one individual could cover in the analog offerings alone.… Read the full article

Three Simple and Cost Effective Hot-Rod Mods for the Classic Thorens TD-124 Turntable!

By | April 22nd, 2019|Categories: Positive Feedback|Tags: , |

I’ve always thought of the Thorens TD-124 as one of the most beautiful of the classic turntables, which for whatever reason, reminds me of being the 1955 Ford T-Bird of the turntable world, a classic car which I also happen to greatly admire.

Artisan Fidelity Thorens TD-124 Statement / Classic Long-Base Turntable

I had lusted after a Thorens TD-124 of my own for years, and I finally decided to pull the trigger and ordered one of Christopher Thornton’s Artisan Fidelity Thorens TD-124 Statement turntables with a Cocobolo plinth back in September of 2017 (more HERE), and the completed turntable arrived at my home in November of 2018. … Read the full article
