DALLAS (PTA) — Volti Audio is paired this year with Raven Audio electronics, and for the first time I’ve really had the chance to sit down with Volti Audio founder and designer Greg Roberts. After listening to Greg, and listening to Greg’s horn-loaded masterpieces, I’ve come to many exciting revelations about Volti Audio loudspeakers. They are indeed a thrilling window to the past, along with Greg being one of the few people capable of taking horn loaded loudspeakers to new and exciting places, both sonically and in design.… Read the full article

LSAF 2019 Must See

DALLAS (PTA) — This year’s LONE START AUDIO FEST is already on course to be their best sounding, and most fun yet. Lots of great sounding rooms happening at this show, and the competition between them is fierce. Yes, this is one really laid-back and fun show, but the bragging rights remain. All rooms at LSAF 2019 are taking this whole sound thing as seriously as they take their beer selection.

Let’s start with the Must See Rooms for Friday (Day One) of Lone Star Audio Fest 2019

AXPONA 2019 Show Coverage brought to you by Core Power Technologies

I saw a little note taped to the door, congratulating Gary Dews of BorderPatrol on his anniversary. Apparently, he’s spent 30 years “doing time” in high-end audio — a remarkable achievement for what has largely been a one-man-band, cheerfully beating the drum of “quality power supplies” and “tube audio sound” in a time that seems to have largely stepped out of that mode. I first met Dews at the Capital Audiofest back in 2010, and as I wrote then, I was gobsmacked by the sound of his decidedly not vintage-sounding gear.… Read the full article

Florida 2019: Friday with Paul

by Paul Elliott

Michael Fremer gets the alignment right and cuts the ribbon to open the first Florida Audio Expo!

All the work Alan and his team has now come together and the show opened to the public at 10 am.  A good steady stream of head off to the exhibit rooms.

Tortuga Audio

It’s hard to decide where to start (way too much stress), so I randomly fell into the Tortuga Audio room.  Morten Sissener has and interesting take on an old idea of using LDR (Light Dependent Resistor) for controlling volume. … Read the full article

Border Patrol, Volti Audio, Triode Wire Labs – CAF 2018

Border Patrol Amplifiers

You can also catch my writing at AH’s sister site — Part-Time Audiophile — where you may also be aware of our staff’s collective fondness for BorderPatrol, Volti Audio, and Triode Wire Labs gear. In the past it was Scot Hull (our publisher), John Stancavage (writer) or Rafe Arnott (former editor) who jumped at the chance to “claim their exhibit rooms for write-up“ in the name of “divide and conquer.” Capital Audiofest 2018 arrives with Scot Hull now focusing more on publisher duties, and Rafe Arnott having moved on to waiting tables somewhere (managing editor InnerFidelity/AudioStream).… Read the full article

CAF 2018: BorderPatrol, Volti Audio, Triode Wire Labs and Where the Magic Is

By | November 11th, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , |

Part-Time Audiophile readers are probably already aware of our enthusiasm for the products of BorderPatrol and Volti Audio. Since I am new to the staff, I am also new to the distinctive and engaging sound accomplished by these two manufacturers. I did get a brief taste of the combo while visiting PTA publisher Scot Hull a few months ago—he was using BorderPatrol amplification and the new Volti Rival speakers in his main system. We were evaluating one of Lyn Stanley’s glorious reel-to-reel limited releases, and I was mightily impressed with the big effortless sound.… Read the full article

There is a reason.

If we’re being serious, this is obvious — because there’s always a reason. It may be stupid, it may be incidental, it may be irrelevant, it may be serendipity, or God, or luck, or spooky-action-at-a-distance, but even then, there’s a reason. But in the case of “why this particular room sounds really good”, the reasons are a bit more straightforward.

Chalk one more up to Team Natural.

Today’s iteration of The System has quite a bit of newness.… Read the full article

Border-Patrol-2

I’ve always looked forward to the involving sound in the Border Patrol room, so I made a note stop by early on Saturday morning for a good listen, well before the crowds took over.  This year, head Border Patrol agent Gary Dews had the usual suspects lined up and working hard.  These included the usual P21EXD stereo amplifier ($11,900 USD as shown) and the affordable but hard-hitting Analogue DAC ($995-$1,850 USD depending on configuration).  I’m used to Gary showing with the English Living Voice speakers, which I have found to sound superb with his gear.… Read the full article

LA Audio Show 2017: Volti’s ‘compact’ Rival speaks with big voice

The Volti Rival.

laas6

I had to chuckle a little to myself when Volti Audio rolled out what it described as its “compact” loudspeaker at the Los Angeles Audio Show.

Calling the new model small, however is kind of like describing a Mercedes-Benz C-Class sedan as “entry level.” Even with that car, you’re still getting plenty of luxury.

It’s much the same with the Rival ($7,900 to $11,900 USD/pair, depending on options). It’s still a Volti, and you’re still looking at a lot of speaker.… Read the full article

AXPONA 2017: Music From Another Room, Part 3

A photojournal by Eric Franklin Shook

You can’t just say “It’s awesome, buy it.”

Eliciting a gut reaction of confidence in consumers who speak your name in conversations of top tier service and products is neither straightforward, measurable, or paint by numbers. Decades of experience and market research at all levels of the supply chain are prerequisite to attaining a seat at the table with the most trusted names in hi-fi. Building a good product is not enough. Anyone telling you different has probably watched Field Of Dreams too many times.… Read the full article
