By | July 15th, 2018|Categories: Headfonia|Tags: , , , , , , , , , |

Disclaimer: This is a Picture Sunday post, representing a very first impression of a particular gear. Check out our recent Picture Sunday articles HERE. Both of the Sony units pictured here were purchased by Nathan.

Longtime Sony fan and owner here. Long time Sony critic and sometimes detractor here. Longtime hiss king here. Longtime critic of hardware interfaces here. Longtime fondler of buttons and knobs here. Longtime critic of faulty outputs here. Longtime critic of false marketing here. The two best examples of portable audio evolution I can think of are Sony’s ZX300 Hi-Res DAP, which I reviewed here, and Sony’s last-generation MD downloader, the MZ-NH3D.… Read the full article

The Lost Generation of Audiophiles

Where are they now?

I admit, being a child of the 80’s does come with a few perks these days. As nostalgia for “the good old days” of my generation ramps up, more and more movie and TV shows like Stranger Things, Atomic Blonde and Comrade Detective show how the decade has finally permeated the warm fuzzy sentiment of public consciousness. Review: Sony NW-WM1Z, MDR-Z1R, TA-ZH1ES – Los tres tomodachis

By | September 26th, 2017|Categories: Headfonia|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Disclaimer: I borrowed Sony MDR-Z1R, NW-WM1Z and TA-ZH1ES  from Sony HQ, in big Tokyo. They returned to Osaki on the 11th of this month. Big thanks to Sony for organizing the loan, as well as an interview, which Headfonia will publish in the soon time.

Update: along with changing ‘pleather’ to ‘synthetic leather’, I refined what I said into hopefully clearer English.

A recent trip to Sony HQ showed me just how damn hard Sony’s engineers work, think, and plan. Parts of the MDR-Z1R, for instance, were in planning, production, and engineering phases for over a decade.… Read the full article

Review: Sony WM1A Walkman – Reform

By | September 19th, 2017|Categories: Headfonia|Tags: , , , , , , , , , |

Disclaimer: I purchased the Sony WM1A for myself couple of months ago. The price of it varies from country to country, but the official price on release was $1200 USD. I think it has dropped down a little lately, to around 1000.

Design & Ergonomics, User Interface, Sound Settings and WM1Z Comparison sections are the same from WM1Z review with few small changes.

This review took quite a while and I know people have been waiting for it. Unfortunately what happened was I broke the screen of my WM1A somehow.… Read the full article

Picture Sunday: Sony NW-WM1Z

By | September 3rd, 2017|Categories: Headfonia|Tags: , , , , , , , , |

Disclaimer: The star of this weeks’ picture Sunday is the Sony NW-WM1Z . This post is a part of our Picture Sunday series.

Sony kindly sent the NW-WM1Z along with an awesome headphone and an awesome DAC to take apart until 11 September. That’s 8 more days. 8 more days with one of the best headphones on the planet and one of the hottest DAC designs I’ve ever used. And then there is this pretty DAP.

Berkhan loves the 1Z.… Read the full article

Disclaimer: Ares II IEM cable was sent to us by Effect Audio. It is terminated with a 4.4mm jack for me to try out the balanced output of Sony WM1A. To check out previous Picture Sunday posts just click HERE.

For some time, 2.5mm balanced has been a widely accepted standard for DAPs, especially Astell&Kern had been the pioneer. Sony on the other hand came up with a different balanced standard. Ares II IEM cable is supplied to us by Effect Audio to hear the difference.… Read the full article

Picture Sunday: Sony ZX2 Walkman

By | March 19th, 2017|Categories: Headfonia|Tags: , , , , , , , , , |

Disclaimer: This week’s picture sunday features my Sony ZX2 DAP. To check out recent Picture Sunday Posts click HERE.

Sony has been returning to it’s roots in the last couple of years. The company was actually a very good Hi-Fi manufacturer, but until 2-3 years ago it was a mess. They didn’t have any successfull Hi-Fi product, they didn’t have any competitive or high performing piece. Just some small amount of people had their vintage TOTL products like MDR-R10, or MDR-F1 etc.… Read the full article
