The Italian job: Diapason, Aqua at Warsaw AV Show 2017 [VIDEO]

Standmount loudspeakers. Many US show exhibitors stay away because experience says attendees don’t take ’em seriously enough. “They walk in, they clock the standmounts and they walk straight out,” said one Californian electronics manufacturer at an RMAF long gone.

If standmount loudspeakers have an image problem, it wasn’t evident at the 2017 Warsaw AV Show. Numerous exhibitors opted for the easier room integration afforded by smaller boxes. Lest we forget: room integration is more critical to sound quality than upstream electronics.… Read the full article

Warsaw AV Show 2017: LampizatOr’s Pacific DAC [VIDEO]

By | November 22nd, 2017|Categories: DAR|Tags: , , , , , , |

Glorious! That’s one word to describe the sound spilling from the Warsaw AV showroom fronted by LampizatOr’s latest uber high-end D/A converter, the Pacific. The brass beast made its debut at RMAF in Denver last month before journeying to a brick-n-mortar store demo in Florida, then London and now Poland.

But careful now: here be troubled waters. I cannot with any ounce of confidence attribute this post’s introductory G word to only the Pacific DAC. After all, show attendees like you and I must listen through an unfamiliar room, unfamiliar loudspeakers, unfamiliar amplification, the unfamiliar Pacific DAC and (for this commentator) unfamiliar music.… Read the full article

Warsaw AV Show 2017: Ubiq Audio [VIDEO]

From a distance, it looks like a coaxially-aligned tweeter. Get closer and we see it’s a horn-loaded compression driver from the pro world. I’m talking about one component of the somewhat imposing the Ubiq Audio Model One loudspeaker (€12,000+) as demonstrated by one Igor Kante at the 2017 Warsaw AV Show.

Kante once distributed brands from higher end in Slovenia – big ticket stuff like Sonus Faber and Burmester. Now he manufactures his own gear of a similar calibre. The Model One’s curved cabinetry doesn’t come easy.… Read the full article

Warsaw AV Show 2017: Neat Acoustics’ IOTA Xplorer

By | November 21st, 2017|Categories: DAR|Tags: , , , |

Acceptability. With the number of apartment-dwelling audiophiles music fans on the rise, a multi-component system housed in a rack and powering twin towers might not be domestically acceptable. Twice so for minimalists who’d rather their audio gear maintain a certain physical discretion rather than provide a source of bragging rights.

Driving down the footprint of electronics is a snap: choose a super-integrated that puts amplifier, DAC, phono stage and streamer inside a single chassis. Hello Vinnie Rossi, Devialet, Peachtree, AURALiC, Moon by SIMAudio, Micromega, Gold Note, Rotel, McIntosh, Bel Canto, Naim or NAD.… Read the full article

The 2017 Warsaw AV Show is in the books and its visitor numbers tallied: 14,000 people put their ears in the National Stadium, the Golden Tulip Hotel and the Sobieski Hotel during the show’s three day run. Click here for a video overview.

This is what a less congested room looked like:

Breaking it down: 1400 visitors (10%) dropped by on Friday, 8400 (60%) on Saturday and 4200 (30%) on Sunday.

The seriously impressive head count was felt particularly strongly in Warsaw’s National stadium on Saturday at 11am, a mere 60 minutes after doors clicked open.… Read the full article

Full house: the sights & sounds of Warsaw AV Show 2017

By | November 19th, 2017|Categories: DAR|Tags: , , |

A game of two halves. Not a cringeworthy 1970s slice of British football commentary but the 2017 Warsaw AV Show. The three-day event runs across two distinct areas of town with shuttle buses and taxis moving visitors between the two zones.

Near the central railway station, the Radisson Blu Sobieski and Golden Tulip hotels house 70+ exhibitors. A few kilometres down the road and, the PGE National Stadium accommodates a further 140 rooms plus a headphone area to rival CanJam Europe.… Read the full article
