Wyred 4 Sound – RMAF 2018

By | October 15th, 2018|Categories: Audiohead|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , |

EJ Sarmento had a trick up his sleeve for the Rocky Mountain Audiofest this year. Known primarily for his highly lauded work with DACs, streamers and amplification this year’s elaborate package of new audiophile releases included a pair of loudspeakers called Tempus ($9k). The new transducers is the first official category release for the west coast company, and at the show definitely lived up to the reputation that EJ has already established as a value-driven hifi establishment.

On top of the new Tempest, we found four other new products at the show starting with the Aura Pre ($3k) into dual Aura 1200M monos ($2k each).… Read the full article

A short film about the Wyred 4 Sound Music Server

Options. In speccing a Wyred 4 Sound Music Server we get the choice of an i3 CPU with 4GB of RAM (US$2999) or i7 CPU with 16GB RAM (US$3999). On internal storage, the former starts with a 2TB HDD and the latter a 1TB SSD, both of which can be optioned upward to a 2TB SSD. Your call.

As its name suggests, the black (or silver) box from California can serve digital audio files to a home network. For those streaming mega libraries to numerous zones simultaneously and with back-end upsampling, the i7 might be the wiser choice.… Read the full article

The Music-First Audiophile and Spotify Connect

By | June 22nd, 2018|Categories: DAR|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , |

Missing: Richard D. James. I Care Because You Do. Selected Ambient Works Vol. 2. Drukqs. Four downright essential Aphex Twin albums and nowhere to be found. Missing too was Prefab Sprout’s Crimson Red (from 2013) and Luna’s debut Lunapark (from 1992). Missing from where exactly? Tidal.

Despite an advertised 50 million+ songs, for this electronic/indie music fan there are holes in Tidal’s library. Filling in those blanks is Spotify whose Ogg Vorbis-encoded lossy streams cast it as the Coke Zero of music rental services.… Read the full article

Orange crush: Wyred 4 Sound’s PH-1 phono stage

By | March 17th, 2018|Categories: DAR|Tags: , , , , , , , , |

The beginning is a familiar one, told a thousand times: I slide the record from its sleeve, and carefully place it on the turntable platter; I delicately pull the tonearm across so that the needle seen from above sits above (but just inside) the record’s outer edge. With the lever I lower the tonearm…

…a gentle THUNK hits the loudspeakers and we begin. Sometimes with a slow build but in the case of the Kitchens Of Distinction’s The Death of Cool, a chiming guitar and a drum fill and puts us in swift indie rock motion.… Read the full article

This year dawned with plenty of questions facing the high-end audio industry. The most pressing were: Would the U.S. economy hold up, allowing manufacturers and retailers to stay afloat? Would vinyl continue its revival, possibly enticing young people into a hobby that’s in danger of aging out? And, would the recent growth in the show circuit create too much of a good thing?

That third question was still hanging in the air as September arrived and the last two of the record seven major domestic gatherings for 2017 were scheduled to go off within weeks of each other, putting a strain on the finances and staff of audio companies and creating decisions for potential out-of-town attendees.… Read the full article

RMAF 2017: Wyred 4 Sound, Acoustic Zen combine for sonic harmony

By | November 5th, 2017|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , |

Robert Lee tends to exhibit his well-regarded Acoustic Zen speakers at shows with an ever-changing list of electronics partners. Despite the diverse group of components — tubes, solid-state, Class A, Class D — he never fails to make a good sound.

The Zen master may have found his best match yet at the 2017 Rocky Mountain Audio Fest. Lee, who’s based in California, teamed up with another Sunshine State manufacturer, Wyred 4 Sound.

Lee paired his flagship Maestro speakers ($43,000/pair USD) with a rack of gear from Wyred that included no fewer than four new products.… Read the full article

By | October 18th, 2017|Categories: Audiohead|Tags: , , , , , , |

Its been roughy two years since we first laid eyes on EJ Sarmento’s new Statement amplifier. The flagship piece was packing some seriously hefty specs and crushing it with the sound it produced through a pair of KEF Reference 3 Foundry Edition speakers at T.H.E. Show Newport 2016. Pushing forward to the present day, EJ has unveiled the newest version of the amplifier now called the statement nextGEN.

Gone is the display screen but several other key elements are still in play for the stereo power amplifier.… Read the full article

In the retail trade, products by Michael Kors and Kate Spade are considered “affordable luxury.” They offer a taste of opulence, but with prices significantly below Chanel or Neiman Marcus.

High-end audio has its more accessible brands as well. One that has been on the rise in recent years is Atascadero, Calif.-based Wyred 4 Sound.

laas9Wyred has been introducing well-built, attractively priced gear at a blistering pace. At last fall’s Rocky Mountain Audio Fest, for example, it displayed three new components – a pair of sleek mono blocks, a power supply and a streamer (then a prototype).… Read the full article

A photojournal by Eric Franklin Shook

You can’t just say “It’s awesome, buy it.”

Eliciting a gut reaction of confidence in consumers who speak your name in conversations of top tier service and products is neither straightforward, measurable, or paint by numbers. Decades of experience and market research at all levels of the supply chain are prerequisite to attaining a seat at the table with the most trusted names in hi-fi. Building a good product is not enough. Anyone telling you different has probably watched Field Of Dreams too many times.… Read the full article
