Focal Dimension + Sub soundbar & subwoofer REVIEW

By | January 31st, 2016|Categories: AV Hub|

What don’t we like about soundbars? Well, their goal is supposed to be the simplification of lounge life, a sound solution for TV and movies (and maybe music) that is relatively neat compared with a set of speakers wired all round the room.

But soundbars are still potentially messy things. They sit out in front of your TV, with a varying number of wires running to their always-too-small rear connection bays. Then most of them come with a subwoofer, often wireless these days but still a big box that you need to stick somewhere near a mains socket.… Read the full article

Gold Note A3-XL

By | January 31st, 2016|Categories: AV Hub|

Italian manufacturer Gold Note has released its A-3 XL, a two-way bass-reflex bookshelf loudspeaker with a 152mm treated carbon-fibre and ‘melted paper’ bass/midrange driver and a 25mm silk-dome tweeter. It’s being distributed in Australia by Absolute Hi End.

The A3-XL features two thick side wall aluminium panels—available in brushed black or silver finish—recessed into the cabinet and anchored with threaded steel bars. Gold Note claims that these panels work as work as passive radiators or, as Gold Note describes them: ‘Virtual Passive Drivers’ and as such, enable greater bass extension.… Read the full article

It has been the trend of late to roll out eye catching statements with portable amps from big companies who are preferring to roll DAC’s and amps into combo units and pitch them as your smartphone or iGadget companion. However, every now and then a darn good old school portable analog amp comes out that actually is very much worth buying.… Read the full article

Aune S16 DAC

Panagiotis Karavitis has posted a review of the Aune S16 DAC ($800) at Part-Time Audiophile. His conclusions:

“Or maybe not, because the S16 not only stood well, but actually put to shame, some well-known European, Japanese and American DACs, costing up to three times more. Maybe not a giant killer, as we all wish we could find, but still a fantastic value for the money.”

D Sonic M3-3000S Dual Mono Amplifier

Rick LaFavre has posted a review of the D Sonic M3-3000S dual mono amplifier ($2375) at Enjoy the Music. His conclusions:

“This is not the first D-Sonic amp I have heard, but it is the first I have heard that overcomes the subtle “digititus” of the previous models. All of the previous models had power for days and were great value compared to the competition, but this new generation stands alone as world class amplifiers. The treble, is not crunchy or fatiguing.

Coincident Speaker Technology Extreme IC Interconnects, Extreme TRS Speaker Cables, and CST Power Cables

Brett Rudolph has posted a review of the Coincident Speaker Technology Extreme IC interconnects ($450), Extreme TRS speaker cables ($1095), and CST power cables ($549) at Enjoy the Music. His conclusions:

“Coincident Speaker Technology’s cables are definitely a player within their price range. They performed extremely well and certainly did not disappoint in their overall abilities to reproduce material. Within their price point there are quite a number of extremely capable challengers, but it would be a mistake not to put these cables against any you might be considering for your system.”

V-MODA Crossfade Wireless a Mixed Bag

By | January 31st, 2016|Categories: Innerfidelity|

I know it’s anathema to audio purists, but wireless headphones—in principle—are terrific. No, I’m not going to give up on wires for my reference level listening; heck, I don’t even give it up when i’m traveling (Bose QC20,25) or mowing the back yard (Westone ES5, JH Audio JH13FP). But when I’m around the house needing to take part in a conference call or when I watch a movie on my iPad I much prefer life without the wire. When sound quality isn’t critical for me (phone calls and video) the added convenience of wireless headphones wins the moment.… Read the full article
