IFA 2017: Sony native 4K projection around $7500?

By | August 31st, 2017|Categories: AV Hub|

There’s no local pricing announced yet, but it seems certain that Sony’s native 4K projection is about to become significantly more affordable, with the release of the VPL-VW260E as one of three new models announced at IFA 2017 in Berlin.

The VPL-VW260E has been quoted as having a European price of 4990 euros, and given that’s a fifth of the European price for the VW1000ES, we might just see an Australian price around $7500 for this new ‘entry-level’ (Sony prefers “high value-to-cost”) model.Read the full article

Soundtracks Series Vol. 2: Karen Bells’ Top 10

What defines a great soundtrack? For you, it might have to make you weep, like M. Butterfly, or shake your tail feather, like Saturday Night Fever. For me, it has to transport me somewhere—the back of a meat truck, where a coupla goodfellas hang frozen and soulless; a dirty Hollywood punk club in the early 80s; a freaked-out laboratory helmed by a transvestite mad scientist. These ten soundtracks take me outside of whatever run-of-the-mill place I’m in when listening and drop me smack-dab into the middle of a whole new experience.… Read the full article

Soundtracks Series Vol. 1: Duck Baker’s Top 10

Soundtracks Series: Intro For this online exclusive I asked TAS writers to recommend their “Top 10” soundtracks or film scores, preferably connected by a theme. That didn’t take much prompting, as at some point every music lover has been smitten by film music. Some writers dissected the close connection between certain music scores and films while others focused on song-oriented soundtracks full of pop tunes that existed before the movie was made. In most cases, the album headings listed the label for the original record, although we should note that some Golden Age film scores waited decades for an official …… Read the full article

All the biggest AirPod alternatives from IFA 2017

By | August 31st, 2017|Categories: TechRadar|

One of the biggest announcements to come out of the iPhone 7 launch event (aside from the removal of the headphone jack), was the AirPods, a pair of wireless earbuds that not only cut the cord between the headphones and the phone, but also between the earbuds themselves.

Now that Apple has brought the world’s attention to this new form factor, headphone companies are rushing to bring out their take on the so-called ‘true wireless’ earbud.

At IFA 2017, almost one year on from the announcement of the AirPods, we’ve gotten to see more of these efforts.

Here’s a rundown of what’s been announced.

One of the biggest problems with the AirPods is how they rely upon Siri for controls.… Read the full article

Marshall’s new multi-room speakers want to remove your reliance on your phone

By | August 31st, 2017|Categories: TechRadar|

Multi-room and Bluetooth speakers are a great way of getting music from your phone playing throughout your home, but they can occasionally suffer from this over reliance on your phone for controlling them. That shouldn’t be a problem for Marshall’s new line of multi-room speakers.

The speakers feature a dial dedicated to seven presets, each of which you can set to play your favorite Spotify playlists, internet radio stations, or other music sources.

We can see this as being great for everything from quickly turning the radio on in the morning, to getting your favorite Spotify playlist started when your get home from work.

All of these dials are styled like those on the classic Marshall amplifiers, which provides an authentically tactile experience.

Each speaker has the classic Marshall dials, with LED lights adding a modern touch.

JBL Control Xstream speaker pair offer built-in Chromecast and Spotify Connect

By | August 31st, 2017|Categories: TechRadar|

IFA has always traditionally been an A/V show, and IFA 2017 is no different, with more speakers and headphones than you can shake a subwoofer at. What has changed however is the tech powering the tunes, with the speakers on show now almost entirely wireless streaming systems.

Case in point: the tidy-looking JBL Control Xstream speakers. Set to be sold as a pair, they come with Google Chromecast built-in, and also work with the Spotify Connect feature for physical-media-free streaming playback.… Read the full article

On hitting Rock Bottom

Florence, Italy. In the height of the summer season, it’s easy to lose oneself among the thousands of tourists that flock daily to the Duomo; or who wander room to room at the Uffizi Gallery; or casually stroll the Ponte Vecchio. It’s far too hot to walk any faster, the sun far too intense to think about pasta or pizza.

This city’s network of narrow streets offer respite from the heat of the day. In one such street,Via Giraldi, ten minutes stroll from the Cathedral, we find Rock Bottom Records – a most non-Italian name given to Florence’s best record store.… Read the full article
