CAS7 Richard Austen Reports, Part 4

By | September 12th, 2017|Categories: Dagogo|Tags: , |

Another room that I quite enjoyed was Room 5205 using Eficion F250 speakers ($9,950), Plinius SA103 power amps ($10,150), Exemplar Audio eXception SE preamp ($5495), Oppo UPD-205 4k Audiophile disc player ($1,299) and Line Magnetic LM-502CA DAC ($1,800). I happen to own this DAC which sadly will soon be discontinued. This system had a big rich sound with big bass. Occasional bass boom in this room but I always like to remind people that this is the second floor of a hotel.

Apple TV goes 4K

Apple TV 4K

While the mainstream media coos over the iPhone X, we’re rather more excited to see the upcoming release of the Apple TV 4K, with support for both 4K and High Dynamic Range (HDR), and it’s a small coup for Dolby that it will support both HDR10 and Dolby Vision. (No mention was made of HDR10+.)

Apple promises a growing selection of 4K HDR movies to be available on iTunes — and a particular bonus is that users will get automatic upgrades of any owned HD titles in their existing iTunes library to 4K HDR versions as they become available.… Read the full article

What If Digital Had Never Happened?

By | September 12th, 2017|Categories: Stereophile|

Digital audio forever disrupted the way music is recorded, mixed, and mastered—and, to even greater extents, how music is distributed, sold, played, and consumed. Music unmolested by zeros and ones is now nearly extinct.

There’s no going back, but what if, in 1983, the Compact Disc had bombed? What if music lovers worldwide had rejected the shiny new digital format because they thought LPs sounded so much better? And what if later attempts at digital formats with higher resolutions also shriveled and died, due to lack of interest by recording engineers and consumers?… Read the full article

The late Owsley “Bear” Stanley spent his life raising consciousness. Whether it was mixing up jars of LSD, building his famous Wall of Sound PA system for the Grateful Dead, or supervising the creation of an incredible library of live recordings, Bear Stanley was after a certain purity, a higher level of quality, epiphanies.… Read the full article

Craft Recordings

Craft Recordings

Craft Recordings is an ambitious new reissue label for Concord Bicycle Music. Considering how much music Concord has access to, that’s worth noting, especially because Craft Recordings promises thoughtfully-curated projects and high production standards. With the launching of such an ambitious new label, the first release better be impressive—and Craft’s new three-LP vinyl edition of The Complete 1957 Riverside Recordings of Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane certainly qualifies. When I spoke to the president of Craft Recordings, Sig Sigworth, he explained the goals of Concord’s new imprint.… Read the full article
