Review: Drop THX AAA 789 – Chica Style!

By | November 10th, 2019|Categories: Headfonia|Tags: , , , , |

This review is not by any of the HFN Staff members but it is a guest article written by Jana, aka Hifi Chica. I’ve always wanted to have a female writer for Headfonia.com but female audiophiles who like to write seem hard to find. When she asked me if I was interested in publishing a guest review, I did not hesitate. It’s important to know this is a guest review, so it doesn’t look like our regular reviews, neither does it contain all the info we usually cover.… Read the full article

Alter Bridge: The Rise Of Skywalkers

By | November 10th, 2019|Categories: AV Hub|

Note: This piece first appeared in Australian Guitar #135Subscribe to our print edition here!

Walk The Sky may be Alter Bridge’s shortest album in over a decade, but rest assured, it’s a monumental slab of career-spanning alt-metal craziness.

Words by Matt Doria.

Celebrating their 15th year of alt-metal domination in 2019, Alter Bridge look back on a timeline that has well and truly established them as the unequivocal leaders of heavy music’s new generation. Led by the inimitable voice of Myles Kennedy (who’s elsewhere shot to stardom as the mic-slinger in Slash’s band) and the double wallop of power in Kennedy and Mark Tremonti’s fierce dynamic as guitarists, the Florida foursome were an instant hit on the shredder’s circuit. … Read the full article

Spatial Audio, LTA, LampizatOr, Anticables | CAF 2019

By | November 10th, 2019|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , |

I tend to search out the Spatial Audio rooms at high-end audio shows such as the 2019 Capital Audiofest–they usually pair with Linear Tube Audio, one of my favorite amplifier manufacturers, and they always achieve an unusually tactic, enveloping sound that I find seductive. (In particular, I think the open-baffle Spatial Audio loudspeakers are one of the best pure transducers for the human voice, hence their slogan “Return to Purity.”) The Spatial Audio room was very similar to the rooms I’ve heard in the past, with Anticables, an LTA Z10 Integrated and a LampizatOr Amber 3 DAC.… Read the full article

Rega delivers the 'next-level' Aethos amplifier

By | November 10th, 2019|Categories: AV Hub|

Rega’s new reference stereo amplifier, the Aethos, has been announced for an Australian launch in mid-December. It takes concepts from the company’s multi-award-winning Elex-R and Elicit-R amps to the next level in this dual-mono design with features such as fully discrete FET-based line amplifier, polypropylene capacitors throughout the signal path, K-Power reservoir capacitors, and a high current output stage comprising four 160W 16A Sanken output transistors per channel.

The output is quoted at 125W into eight ohms (0.007% THD+N @ 1kHz, 22Hz to 30kHz) or 156W into 6 ohms.… Read the full article

Pro-Ject VC-S2 RCM

By | November 10th, 2019|Categories: AV Hub|

Interdyn has released Pro-Ject’s VC-S2 ALU record cleaning machine (RCM) which it says takes record cleaning to new levels both in terms of the efficacy of the cleaning process and the speed at which LPs are able to be cleaned. [Click image to enlarge]

‘The new Pro-Ject VC-S2 is super powerful and cleans records in as little as two rotations, which is around three times faster than comparable cleaning machines,’ says Leigh Fischer of Interdyn. ‘The result is a much faster and more effective cleaning process, plus the improved motor that Pro-Ject developed to enable this high level of performance is also more robust, so it will last for a long and extended lifetime.’

Unlike many RCMs, the VC-S2 is built from aluminium, so it’s able to withstand fluid spills without compromising the chassis.… Read the full article

SPL Phonitor XE Headamp/DAC Review

By | November 10th, 2019|Categories: Innerfidelity|

I mused a while back in my Ether 2 review what it meant for something to be ‘the best,’ at what it does. Moving beyond the, frankly, intellectually lazy idea that ‘it’s all subjective,’ I came to the conclusion that with regards to audio, ‘best’ is something that exists as a topic of conversation between the zeitgeist and manufacturing capabilities of the time.

As with all people however, we learn and change. I’m no longer convinced the equation is quite that simple, or at least I’d like to complicate the idea I put forward in that review by re-examining the criteria or personal taste that I left out of that piece.… Read the full article

The best Bluetooth speakers

By | November 10th, 2019|Categories: TechRadar|

If you don't have one already in your AV arsenal, a Bluetooth speaker is a must-own piece of technology. They're the best way to take your tunes with you to picnics, beaches and outdoor adventures, and some of the best ones sound just as good as almost any indoor speaker that you'd buy.

However most of us can't afford a new speaker for each occasion, which means we need to look for one that'll serenade us from the bedroom to the beach and everywhere in-between.… Read the full article
