Cary Audio, ProAc and Wireworld – RMAF 2018

by Eric Shook

It was a full weekend for Cary Audio as they were showing two systems; one introducing the new SLI-100 integrated amplifier, along with introducing the new Cary DM550 digital music streamer, which was used to participate in Saturday morning’s MQA Live Event. The second system: consisted of a Cary AiOS all-in-one system, with ProAc Tablets, and a static display of the new Cary DM600 digital music streamer.

The main system was of most interest to me as I am a former owner of a Cary SLI-80 integrated, and it is often remembered as the one that got away.Read the full article

Sonus Faber Electa Amator III & Gravis VI Sub – RMAF 2018

By | October 29th, 2018|Categories: Audiohead|Tags: , , , , , , , , |

Sonus Faber actually had two rooms rocking at RMAF this year. The bigger setup featured the new line-array XRT2.1Ks we covered at our visit to the NY World of McIntosh secured to a pair of the MC1.25KW monos. A very nice sounding system in its own right, but our attention was drawn even closer to the secondary room which housed an MA8000 integrated and MC80 transport to a pair of the new Electa Amator III bookshelf-style speakers.

The two-way speakers were sitting next to a new Gravis VI ($7k) sub due out in early December, but at the time of my visit wasn’t hooked up.… Read the full article

Devore’s New Orangutan – RMAF 2018

By | October 24th, 2018|Categories: Audiohead|Tags: , , , , , , |

No friends, the profound John Devore does not have a new favorite pet of the great ape variety, he in fact, has a new reference loudspeaker which we got to hear at RMAF this year. The Devore Fidelity Orangutan Reference System is actually broken out into four separate cabinets, with two more mobile 10″ paper cone low-end transducers for the bass end of things – what John affectionally calls the O/Ref/B.

The the other O/Ref/A houses another 10″ paper cone woofer with a bronze phase plug with one 1″ silk dome tweeter and one off-axis .75″ silk super tweeter.… Read the full article

When The Audio Company of Marietta, Georgia decides to demonstrate what they do, they pull out all of the stops, and bring their A-game. Becoming darlings of the audio show circuit for consistently producings best-in-show sound, they also have a knack for creating systems that pluck the “audio eye-candy” strings that generates buzz from press, exhibitors, and show attendees.

The Audio Company was showing a slew of new products for 2018. Starting with the VAC Statement 450i iQ Integrated Amplifier ($150,000 USD); an ultimate performance, cost-no-object, tube integrated amplifier.Read the full article

AMG, VTL, Vandersteen, Audioquest, HRS and The Audio Alternative – RMAF 2018

Most people walked into this room and went straight for the amps and speakers, or electronics and cables. My eye was drawn to the turntable, for a simple reason, it has three electronic capacitive touch speed controls which change color when in action. I was hoping the digital would be playing in the room so I could take a stab at fiddling with the buttons, but alas is my life — it wasn’t in the cards.

The AMG Viella turntable ($23,750 USD) was outfitted with a smooth looking Cherry wood trim skirt, and on-brand 12JT Turbo arm and cable.Read the full article

Vinnie Rossi L2 Signature Preamp and Monoblocks – RMAF 2018

By | October 23rd, 2018|Categories: Audiohead|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , |

We saw Vinnie Rossi’s L2 mono blocks poke their head out of the R&D shell at AXPONA this year, but the full dual mono rig with new matching L2 preamplifier was on display at RMAF. Paired once again with the well-loved Harbeth series of loudspeakers, the big 40.2 anniversary editions ($18k) were up to bat when I entered the room.

The new pre starts at $15k and along with the signature monos (also $15k/pair) is very much a statement piece from Vinnie, not just in price but in design as well.… Read the full article

TriangleArt and MURAUDIO – RMAF 2018

By | October 22nd, 2018|Categories: Audiohead|Tags: , , , , |

by Eric Shook

Collaborating with TriangleArt, Muraudio Electrostatic Loudspeakers brought their lively sounding SP1 Point Source Electrostatic loudspeakers ($14,700 pr USD) when in semi-gloss veneers and solid colours. However here at RMAF 2018, they were on display in Muraudio’s signature SP1 Steller White High Gloss finish which is an additional $650 USD. The speakers are as contemporary as any at the show when it comes to design, and yet even with the classic luxury looks of the Triangle Art electronics, one could mistakenly assume they are all from the same manufacturer.… Read the full article

HiFiMAN Arya, R2R200, HE5se and Jade II – RMAF 2018

By | October 20th, 2018|Categories: Audiohead|Tags: , , , , , , , , |

Yes, that is a total of four new products on the way from HiFiMAN. The planar-loving personal audio company now offers a long and wide cross section of gear that offers a little bit for anyone and everyone. Designer Fang Bian is never one to sit back and relax in this regard, and it really doesn’t come as much of a surprise that he’s got not only a new $2.5k electrostatic system, but also a new HE1000 V2 planar update AND a new micro-sized DAP with LHDC wireless codex.… Read the full article

Schiit Audio Teases An Amplifier Named Aegir – RMAF 2018

By | October 17th, 2018|Categories: Audiohead|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , |

Like other some other audio show appearances, Schiit Audio pulled up residence in both the headphone area and in a two channel room at RMAF this year. The company recently broke party lines and returned to their roots with the release of a full-fledged loudspeaker pres and a mono/stereo power amp separates. Still hot off the R & D bench, the Vidar amps ($699) push 400 watts of Class AB in mono mode, and make a great pairing with the Schiit’s balanced tube pre Freya, also priced at $699.… Read the full article

Ryan Speakers and Pass Labs – RMAF 2018

By | October 16th, 2018|Categories: Audiohead|Tags: , , , , , , , , |

While Ryan Speakers certainly has a flushed out line of floor standers to standmounts, its the new S610 that has really caught our eye as of late. Their room at RMAF this year was a relatively simple one, lined up next to elaborate vinyl incarnations and room-filling giant horn speakers. But it was simplicity with a cold shot of hifi accuracy, dynamics and well… value, all things considered.

The entire system wasn’t what most consider fully budget value, as each component easily sailed victoriously north of $2k per, but rather an interesting mix of slightly more attainable high end.… Read the full article
