Parasound’s new Halo JC 5 is said to be essentially ‘two JC 1 monoblocs on the one chassis.’ ‘Our customers would often tell us they loved everything the JC 1 offers, but wondered if we could deliver comparable performance in a no-compromise stereo amplifier, and save them money and space,’ said Richard Schram, the president and founder of Parasound, ‘so we challenged John Curl to distil the essence of two JC 1 mono blocks into a single chassis, and the result has exceeded everyone’s expectations.’
John Curl designed the Halo JC 1 monobloc 16 years ago and since it’s been available it has been on Stereophile magazine’s ‘Class A Recommended Component’ list for fifteen of those years—the longest of any audio component—and picked up an ‘Amplifier of the Year’ award (2003) along the way.
The Parasound Halo JC 5 is a high-bias Class A/B design that provides 12-watts per channel of pure Class-A power after which is switches to Class-A/B operation in which mode it can deliver 400-watts per channel into 8Ω and 600-watts per channel into 4Ω. The JC 5 can also be bridged for mono operation, in which mode it can deliver 1,200-watts into 8Ω. The output stage uses 24 beta-matched, 15-amp, 60MHz bipolar transistors which are claimed to be able to deliver peak current of 90 amperes.
The power supply employs a 1.7kVA shielded toroidal power transformer with independent secondary windings that supply independent voltages for the left and right channels which have filter caps totalling 8,880µF. The driver and output stages add a further 132,000µF of capacitance. The entire circuit is direct-coupled and protected by d.c. servo circuitry.
‘The Parasound Halo JC 5 combines high power and ultra-high bias Class A/AB sonic quality at roughly two-thirds the price of a pair of JC 1s,’ said Claver Harper, of Network Audio Visual, which distributes Parasound in Australia. Available in silver or black, the JC 5 retails for $10,995 (RRP).
