Klipsch RP600-M, Cambridge Audio | RMAF 2019

By | September 21st, 2019|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , , |

I walked into this Klipsch room before the one I reported on yesterday, and I was a little disappointed to find a pair of Klipsch RP600-M loudspeakers ($549/pair in walnut or black, $649 for piano gloss) instead of something from the Heritage line. I have nothing against Klipsch’s other speaker lines, but I just don’t get as excited about them as I do a gorgeous pair of La Scalas or Cornwalls. For many years Klipsch has made more affordable speakers with this specific look, black cabinets, copper woofer cone, tweeter recessed in a waveguide inset, but the Klipsch RP600-M seems to mark a turning point for affordable speakers.… Read the full article

ListenUp Audio Video and RMAF Domination | RMAF 2019

By | September 20th, 2019|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

ListenUp Audio Video, which operates a chain of high-end audio stores throughout Colorado and New Mexico, exhibited in at least a dozen rooms and booths at the 2019 Rocky Mountain Audio Fest. Remember when I said I was amazed at Scott Walker Audio for running eight rooms at T.H.E. Show back in June? Well, ListenUp has upped the ante considerably. I know, since I visited at least 11 of those rooms, spending much of Sunday basking in the glow of many excellent systems.… Read the full article

Sony SA-Z1 and the Art of Near-Field Listening | RMAF 2019

By | September 19th, 2019|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , |

The Sony SA-Z1 “desktop” system is poised to revolutionize near-field listening for a number of discerning audiophiles. The Sony SA-Z1, which will retail in the high four-figure range when it’s released, consist of two active speakers, a DAC and even room correction, and the folks at Sony are quite excited at the sonic capabilities of this very innovative and somewhat unusual system.

Haniwa Audio | RMAF 2019

By | September 19th, 2019|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , |

Haniwa Audio has always meant one thing to me–fabulous phono cartridges. I’ve always considered them one of those small Japanese companies, like Miyajima or My Sonic Lab or a half-dozen others that have a Zen-like approach to the art of the “record needle.” I was surprised when I walked into the Haniwa Audio room at the 2019 Rocky Mountain Audio Fest and witnessed an entire system–speakers, amps, turntable, phono pre–all made by Haniwa.

Most unusual was the tiny HSP01 horn speakers ($25,000/pair with the HDSA01 Digital Phase Control System amplifier) that nevertheless produced a big and dynamic sound with LPs from Harry Pearson‘s recommended list of recordings.… Read the full article

Parasound and Tekton | RMAF 2019

By | September 19th, 2019|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , , |

I made a joke to a fellow show attendee when I entered the Parasound and Tekton room at the 2019 Rocky Mountain Audio Fest and I saw the massive, almost phone booth-size Tekton Moab speakers. Based on what I read from John Richardson’s review of the Tekton Pendragon loudspeakers from a few years ago, I know that Tekton is one of those new generation loudspeaker manufacturers that offer an enormous amount of product for surprisingly little money. So I took one look at these monsters, each one with a 15-tweeter array, and said, “Yeah, these probably retail for $4000.”

Notable Audio Products, Joseph Audio, Doshi Audio, J. Sikora, Cardas Audio | RMAF 2019

By | September 17th, 2019|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Notable Audio Products is the distribution side of Jeff Fox’s Command Performance AV dealership in Falls Church VA, and Jeff had sort of a late ’90s New York Yankees approach to RMAF 2019–stack the room with talent and win it all in the end. When you think about all the brands in that room–Joseph Audio, Doshi Audio, J. Sikora, Cardas Audio, Aurender, Kuzma, Koetsu, Ortofon, Berkeley, Modulum Audio and Artnovion–it’s no wonder that I walked away from that room thinking “It’s going to be hard to top that.”

Nola Speakers, VAC and a Pair of Audio Legends | RMAF 2019

By | September 16th, 2019|Categories: Nordost, Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , , |

Scot Hull summoned me to the Nola Speakers and VAC room at the 2019 Rocky Mountain Audio Fest to discuss a review of a pair of loudspeakers. When I walked into the room I couldn’t help but notice the pair of Nola Concert Grand Reference Gold Mk. 2s sitting there, practically grazing the ceiling, each one weighing 275 pounds and containing 12 drivers. “What, these?” I asked Scot. Yeah, I’ll be able to unpack these and move these around for proper positioning with one hand tied behind my back, right?… Read the full article

In Living Stereo, Mactone, Trenner & Friedl, Clearaudio, Hana, Auditorium 23 | RMAF 2019

By | September 15th, 2019|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , |

At the 2019 Rocky Mountain Audio Fest, New York City dealer In Living Stereo presented a room that was close to my heart. First, they presented a vinyl-only system, something I’ve done before at high-end audio shows and found unusually satisfying and fun. Second, they used the Trenner & Friedl Osiris ($8500/pair) as loudspeakers. You probably know from the Spring Issue of The Occasional that I’m a huge fan, not to mention owner, of T&F. I found this exciting, however, because the Osiris is perhaps the only model from these Austrian speaker designers that I haven’t yet heard.… Read the full article

Well Pleased AV, Vinnie Rossi, Qln, Innuos, Swisscables | RMAF 2019

By | September 14th, 2019|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , , |

Well Pleased AV, a distributor based in Virginia, immediately scored extra points for the diagonal set-up in their exhibit room at RMAF 2019. When I’ve lived in a house where I had the space to do it, I did. Diagonal room set-ups for your audio system result in a magnificently deep soundstage, one that’s so addictive that it’s hard to return to the ol’ put-it-against-the-wall ethos.

Well Pleased AV hosted Vinnie Rossi’s debut of the L2i-SE integrated amplifier ($18,995), which consists of a Class A preamplifier design that can use 2A3, 45, 300B, PX4, 101D and other 4-pin directly-heated triodes along with a Class AB MOSFET power amplifier that puts out 100 wpc at 8 ohms and 175 wpc into 4.… Read the full article
