Synergistic Research Active Ground Block SE

By | April 10th, 2019|Categories: Positive Feedback|Tags: , , |

One of the many reasons why I love the audiophile hobby so much is that it always affords me so many avenues to learn something new and interesting. For example, take the need to “ground” all your audio components. On the surface, grounding may seem like a boring concept. However, if you dig beneath the surface, it is anything but.

Electrical theory 101, states that the wire that supplies power to our components has three conductors. The “hot” conductor supplies the current, the “neutral” conductor provides the current’s return path to the ground, and then you have the ground.… Read the full article

iFi AC iPurifier – Helping Improve Your Playback Experience by Reducing AC Power Noise

By | March 30th, 2019|Categories: Positive Feedback|Tags: , , |

At my old place, I had a plethora of audio-related problems, not the least of which was with AC power. An early 80s house, it was reasonably well built, but almost everything in the home was contractor grade, and not everything employed the best construction practices. I first noticed I had an issue when my subwoofers would randomly start humming, often very loudly. It took a while to diagnose that I had a DC leakage problem (of undetermined origin), and the affordable solution was an Emotiva CMX-2 common mode filter.… Read the full article

Acoustic Revive RTP-4EU Absolute AC Power Strip

By | February 21st, 2019|Categories: Positive Feedback|Tags: , , |

A power strip is simply a “splitter” of the power supply—it goes in with a single cable, and it goes out via several outputs/sockets. Acoustic Revive in Europe offers one model, featuring four sockets. We would like to present you the latest version called the Absolute.

This is the first part of a two-part test. Later we will present also the Absolute power cable and an entire Absolute system with the power strip, power cable and two filters.

“To filter or not to filter?” I was stopped with this question for much longer then it would take to chose one of these two answers.… Read the full article

PS Audio P20 and P15 AC Regenerators – Keeping the System Clean

By | February 9th, 2019|Categories: Positive Feedback|Tags: , |

PS Audio has been steadily developing as a high-end manufacturer since 1974, despite the trading of leadership on various occasions. Paul McGowan, the “P,” and Stan Warren, the “S,” were the founding partners. Stan left in the early 80s to found Superfon. Paul would leave in the 90s to join Arnie Nudel, having a hand in the very successful Infinity Systems and Genesis loudspeakers. After PS Audio traded hands a couple times, Paul left Infinity to buy back the PS Audio brand.… Read the full article

Furutech NanoFlux and LineFlux Cables and Power Products

By | December 31st, 2018|Categories: Positive Feedback|Tags: , , , , , |

When I first spoke with Scot Markwell, US Distributor of Furutech products, at Elite Audio Video Distribution in LA, and a longtime colleague of, and setup man for, the late Harry Pearson, about the opportunity to review a full loom of Furutech flagship cables and passive power devices, I admit to being more than a little interested.

I can’t imagine anyone motivated to read this evaluation could be unfamiliar with the name. The widespread acceptance and use of the Furutech brand of terminations by so many of the most recognized cable and speaker manufactures has made the name almost ubiquitous in today’s high-end cable game.… Read the full article

Power conditioners are an essential part of a high fidelity audio system. The reproduction of musical sounds in our homes begins with AC power. Unfortunately, AC power is susceptible to all manner of electrical contamination that impedes audio components from sounding their best.

Even dedicated sound rooms with independent wiring can suffer from noise produced beyond the electrical box. Core Power Technologies’ EQUI=CORE 300 suppresses noise by converting alternating current to balanced power.

In the same way that balanced signal cables uses two signal conductors plus a ground, allowing noise picked up along the way to be canceled through polarity inversion, so does balanced power.… Read the full article

Synergistic Research PowerCell 12 UEF SE

Please be patient as I step you through some backstory. I reviewed the Synergistic Research PowerCell 10 UEF power conditioner back in October 2014. It made a tremendous impact on the overall sound of my system—all for the good! Other than a change in speakers, maybe more of an impact than any other single component at that point in time. Yes, it was that impressive. It has remained in my system ever since despite dozens of other changes.

Last year, Synergistic Research (SR) approached me to do a follow-up review on the new PowerCell 12 UEF SE.… Read the full article
