Synergistic Research: Powerful Foundations

Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about the power foundation of a stereo system. Six years ago, Roy Gregory’s talk at the Nordost demos at Rocky Mountain Audio Fest intrigued me; specifically, he spoke about using better power cables and line conditioners to lower noise and using this as the “foundation” for an audio system. About three years ago, I dropped into a demo led by Synergistic Reseach’s Ted Denney and watched and listened as he steadily added his cables, power conditioners, and all manner of tweaky devices.… Read the full article

Review: Heresy with a Nordost Heimdall 2 ethernet cable

By | January 15th, 2018|Categories: Nordost, Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , |

It has bothered me a bit and it took some thinking on what to do with the Nordost Heimdall 2 ethernet cables. The problem? They make a huge difference over my Supra Cat8 cables, let alone the generic Cat6a I was using before the Supra ones. And if someone dares to say “ethernet cables make a difference in sound reproduction” he will immediately get labeled as a fool, a crazy, or even worse, an audiophile.

The story goes back a few months, I was asked if I would be interested in “auditioning” some ethernet cables.… Read the full article

PS Audio P10 Power Plant Regenerator: An impressive start

PS-Audio-P10-Feature

The P10 Power Plant Regenerator.

PS Audio very kindly provided me a P10 Power Plant Regenerator for review back in March, and after having the unit in my reference system for last few months, I have to say that I’m deeply impressed with it’s capabilities.

PS-Audio-P10-4

Despite it’s size, the P10 tucks away neatly, but looks good enough to have front, and centre too.

I had been skeptical for some time back in my early audiophile-teen days about the difference cables, sockets, or AC-treatment could ultimately offer when it came to audible sonic benefits, but as the old saying goes: The proof is in the pudding.… Read the full article

Review: Triode Wire Labs is All American

By | April 15th, 2017|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , |

triode-wire-labs-5609

There is an argument to be made that writing about audiophile cabling is more than a bit like dancing on the “third rail” — even with all the poise in the world, no good can ever come of it. This is, in this reviewer’s opinion, a foolish stance. Understandable, but foolish.

The problem appears to lie in that middle-distance, square between expectation and reality, where far too many see only smoke and mirrors. Now, that isn’t to say that there isn’t chicanery that goes on in high-end audio, nor would any reasonable person deny that there are some cable manufacturers that have been known to indulge more than a bit in pseudo-scientific marketing, if not outright thaumaturgy, colored with dramatic levels of (admittedly impressive) prestidigitation. … Read the full article

Dr’s Orders: Study anatomy (hands on with the Metaxas Marquis Memento Mori headphone amp)

By | March 13th, 2017|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , |

So I get an email from Kostas Metaxas of Metaxas and Sins in which I am asked if I would care to listen to the new Marquis Memento Mori headphone amplifier (lets call it the Skull from now on). I would do almost anything to get my hands on that piece of sculpture, so I try to play cool, hold my breath and reply in an appropriate fashion. Yes Kostas, why not (as in hellyeah, asap)

But I don’t want to get greedy, many friends would like to see, touch, hear the Skull.… Read the full article

AudioQuest and the holistic cabling approach to reference reviews

By | March 7th, 2017|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , |

aq-reference-arrive-1

AudioQuest cabling arrives.

Reviewing high-fidelity audio equipment is fraught with peril, and snake pits.

Gauging relative sound quality (and writing about it) when inserting a component into an existing system can be a difficult thing to accomplish objectively. There are an incredible amount of variables to take into consideration. So anything that can be done to minimize those variables is a grail quest, and in my experience cabling plays a huge role in reducing said variables.

I’m an emotional creature, and I usually approach my reviewing from that same angle.… Read the full article
