CES 2019: New VTL Phonostage sings with Lyra

By | January 14th, 2019|Categories: Nordost, Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , |

Luke Manley and Bea Lam are two of the hardest working folks in the business.  At every show, you can feel confident that VTL will have a room and its going to sounds fabulous. So it’s no surprise even at CES 2019, when the exhibitor list was short and the halls were light, Luke and Bea brought their usual A-game and provided one of my two favorite rooms at CES 2019.

Earlier in September 2019, I had an opportunity to spend some time with Luke Manley at Audio Element while auditioning the Wilson Audio Sasha DAW driven by VTL Electronics. … Read the full article

Technics continues its re-entry into the turntable arena bringing something for both both the DJ and Audiophile audience with the annoucement of SL-1200MK7 and SL-1500 turntables.

The SL-1200 originally released in 1972 became the standard turntable for DJs for decades. Built on a direct drive system and large platter it provided reliability, speed and stability for clubs. Black dots surrounding its platter and large pitch control button are part of the SL-1200 signature.

Although SL-1200 has seen some updates over the years, its last major update was in 2002 with the release of the 30th Anniversary SL-1200MK5G.… Read the full article

Mytek Intros Two Budget Options – The Liberty DAC and Portable CLEF

By | February 20th, 2018|Categories: Audiohead|Tags: , , , , , , |

The small label above the blue dot on the front panel of the new Liberty DAC by MyTek sums up a lot about the company’s direction in terms of compatibility. Its going more mainstream (in terms of pricing) but is bringing along a slew of audiophile features along with it. While a cool grand is perhaps more than most mainstream digital listeners might pony up, the value is still carved into the idea with large strokes. With Myteks’s upstream aspirations landing a little more on the spicy side (Manhattan II – $6k, Brooklyn DAC+ $2.2k), a $1k DAC sporting a full back of connectivity options is mighty appealing for the target market that shops within this range.… Read the full article

January 9, 2018: Today started out gloomy cold and rainy as I drove to the Sacramento International Airport for a 7:30 am flight to attend the 2018 CES in Las Vegas. This normally short flight turned into a half day of boredom and sitting. Though I have to say the first leg to Salt Lake City, Utah was nice because I was able to stretch out my 6’6″ frame in an exit row with no seat in front of me.

U.S. Audio Shows in 2018: Bigger, Better, More

By | February 7th, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

It appears 2018 is going to be another hectic year for U.S. audio shows. One California event that was postponed last year is set to return — less than a week before another major show in the same city — and several others are upgrading to new venues.

The Home Entertainment Show (T.H.E. Show) cancelled its planned September 2017 event at the eleventh hour, but president Maurice R. Jung told me this week his show will return on June 1-3 in Irvine.… Read the full article

Chord, once Qute2, is now the Qutest with latest DAC launched at CES 2018

By | January 14th, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , |

The Qutest DAC from Chord Electronics.

Chord Electronics makes some of the most musical home, and portable DAC, and headphone amps I’ve heard, and when I got wind that the Qute2 was being replaced by a new Hugo2-ish form-factored DAC at CES 2018, I wanted to know more.

A little digging around the Internet, and I gathered that the Qutest is a stand alone DAC module that eschews a battery pack, and headphone amp in an effort to bring a more affordable top-tier sound (and smaller footprint) to a home high-fidelity setup, which at $1,650 USD (approx.… Read the full article

JBL re-launch L100 Classic loudspeakers at CES 2018

By | January 13th, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , |

Fond memories of Led Zeppelin anyone?

Welcome back, Kotter.

Hell of a show starring John Travolta, Gabe Kaplan, and Ron Paolillo as Horshack that debuted in 1975. I remember often watching it a friend’s house, and the orange-grilled JBL Century speakers sitting on either side of the TV as we did.

Everything old is new again… or so it seems at times. Take for example the legendary JBL L100 Classic loudspeaker I just remembered… that was introduced in 1970 only to become the runaway best-selling monitor the company has ever produced.… Read the full article
